Hello, I see that you did not replace the thermal putty. Is it necessary to change the thermal putty ? Can i use thermal pads instead ? Also, what should the thickness be ?

Your GPU hot spot temperature seems lower. However the maximum core voltage is lower to the initial test. I suggest that you check clock speed vs previous test as well. Thanks for the video.

At 9:10 I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of why marginally higher temps on thicker paste is better than a thinner paste like Kryonaut. I did the same knowing that in a years time I’ll need to open it up again and re-apply the Kryonaut. For that reason, I think next time I’d use thicker Hydronaut and live with then 1-2 degree difference.

I’ve been playing with undervolting the past few days and it works like a charm with this card. At 1905Mhz and 0.900V I’m seeing 7C less temperatures and 200 rpm less on the fans for the exact same performance.

me too, I was hesitant to undervolt my ftw3 3090. But I did it and it was the best thing ever. Temps dropped from 77 to 67c and -300 RPM. so it runs quieter and cooler. 1875Mhz at 875mV for 4K120hz , and 1890Mhz 900mV for 1440p144hz.

Is it normal for the GPU fan to stop spinning when your Pc is on idle, my 3 fans only kick in when I play games or run a heavy benchmark like 3Dfiremark. ( Running a RTX 3080ti EVGA) kinda Weird how it’s able to maintain a 40 to 46 degrees on idle with out the fans spinning, lmk if this is normal or not
@jarednielsen5041
@jarednielsen5041 2 года назад
I have the 3080 ti ftw3 ultra and it will do that if you run the normal bios. When you are running the OC bios the fans have a set floor of 20% (I think) so mine idles at about 31-33C. Running the normal bios my card will idle at 49-52ish with the fans off. Im running 3 2k 165 hz monitors which makes quite a bit of a difference in idle temps when compared to running a single monitor, at least for me. My card will idle at 37ish watts with 3 monitors and like 23 watts with one.

Tony next time you use the plastic aplicator, try to use it at an angle of 160 degree, applying the right pressure. You will see that it is much easier to spread the paste. You have to try the new Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme :)

@mikezappulla4092 2 года назад
I gave up trying to spread that stuff. Lol. Just kept sticking to the applicator and was thicker than kryonaut not extreme. I would try to spread it and if the area where I applied it came into contact with the applicator again, it would come off of that area and stick to the applicator.

Glad I found your channel man, love your editing on the tear down and paste reapplication. I bought this card out of desperation, and because I’ve waited too long ever since graduating and working lol. So this card for me runs extremely hot, I’m talking about 80+ degrees at only 60-70% usage. For reference, I’m running ultra/insane settings on gears 5, CAPPED at 144fps @ 1080p…. I was able to achieve a steady undervolt of 1965Mhz @ 1000mV, don’t want to deal with artifacts, especially at a low resolution (temps began to settle at around 70 degrees). But, this is an insane amount of software effort for settling for typical performance at last gen resolutions and refresh rate….I really shouldn’t be dealing with temps and fan speeds of this caliber, especially for 1080p gaming. Makes me want to consider an RMA with EVGA, but I’m not sure of how that process would prevail given the current market demand. Would you recommend a reapplication of paste at this point? Any suggestions on improving these sort of temps? (halo infinite runs just as sketchy too, even capped at 120 -_-)

Spreading thermal paste as much as possible with a GPU is recommended since they don't have IHS or heat spreading like It's found on CPU. And when cleaning the Chip make sure not to use papertowels if you are not confi with it since you can damage your cards or smaller pins around the chip

GPU die on rtx3080/Ti and 3090 isn't that hot, it heats up about 74 degrees which is pretty adequate. G6x memory chips, however, tend to heat up to 105 degrees on many cards, and if you want to improve overall temps I would suggest to look for better thermal pads. That is more relevant for rtx 3090 users.

I’m considering doing this because my 3080 (Aurus) must have some problem because it hits 87C - 88C during stress tests and it has hit 91C running halo infinite. I just bought it 2 weeks ago… I’ve read online there can be pockets of air between the thermal paste and the sink that cause hot spots. I’ve also had crashes occur completely randomly at temperature as low as 73C. I’d appreciate any comments or thoughts if anyone has them or has experienced something similar.

Make sure to check the four tork screw around the GPU itself. Seeing how there was a generous amount of thermal paste it may have adjusted itself down under heat. Kryonaut requires you to lay the the paddle on a more flat angle to acquire thinner applications. 1gram tube should yield 3 -4 applications, but like you said the only difference it really makes is money spent on tubes of paste, great job.

I just repasted my 3080ti (also evga). I wish you showed how dam hard it was to take the cooler off. it felt like I forgot to take out a screw... but no, all the thermal pads, plus the thermal putty being hardened and squished between components, glued the dam thing together. You cut the video probably because you thought prying at it looked bad, but I wish I saw you struggle with it so I didn't feel like a crazy person risking breaking the card. I had to scrape out all the dried out putty because it was so dry it crumbled away. I did zero overclocking on a 3 year old card and the paste and putty was wrecked.

My 3080ti Ftw3 runs about the same temp. my fans are at 70% when card reaches 70c and it typically tops out at about 67c and my fans are set to step up so they're at 60% til it gets to 70c which it never does since I removed the big OC I had and just run it in the stock bios switch. Looks like EVGA beefed up the power delivery big time from the 3080. I don't know if that was due to the 3080s underwhelming PCB or they just used the 3090 but seeing how the 3090 is considerably different, I'd say it's due to the weak 3080 Ftw3 which was a good GPU mostly, mine was, just nothing great as far as the PCB, basically a stretched founders.

Tears apart 1 month old impossible to buy GPU for no reason, proceeds to apply way too much paste, ends up with worse results. Def triggered.

he smothered it with paste which actually did a bit more harm than good (not super harm but still harm) and it would probably trigger you more to know a simple precision x download and firmware update fixes thermals. I just got mine today and will be doing that not this.

@@housebaelishgaming I've actually had this card for about a year now, and yea I upgraded fw using evga precision. it's a beast, so enjoy! Out of the box there's nothing wrong with thermals that fw upgrade "fixes", this guy is just dumb.

Sorry Tony, i am a really pain in the ass. Last comment, i promise: ). i have the same GPU. Try to use a custom fan profile using Precision X from EVGA. About your case fans..... The bottom ones, are they working as intake? The fans on the AIO radiator -----exhaust? . And the final one. In the back i hope you have an exhaust fan: ).

Thanks for showing us the tear down however you used about 4 times as much thermal compound as you needed... you set out saying you will use a thin amount and put down more than was already on there! Really I hope people watching new to this don't follow this advice, I can see some expensive bricks.

@Lethargy01

That thermal putty is what's going to screw everyone up long term. It's hard to find and if you do find it it's super expensive. Can't replace it with pads due to the poor spacial tolerances in EVGA's design of the 3080 and 3090. The Hybrid cooler version uses thermal pads, so at least that version of the card will be easily and cheaply serviceable long term.

DO NOT BUY THIS CARD, evga 3080 / ti FTW3, a lot of forum posts of fans not reading right with sensors or just flat out not working as well as making obnoxiously annoying sounds as they turn. Mine started with fan 3 making some sound, they it started to fail, yesturday all fans failed, took it apart, cleaned it, and fans 2 / 3 are working (hardly) temps in high 80’s low 90’s. These cards are legit trash and it bs coming evga considering they use to make really nice products (680’s still work to this day)….

Love this guy but this is stupid to put that much paste on the GPU. It looks like a hot mess you better hope your card never has issues after putting all that fucking paste on a new GPU. Bro there is so many other things you could have did a video on and plus if the manufacturer thought it needed all that fucking paste don’t you think all GPU would have that much paste on them?
