Hey I just got a little free time to finally watch this episode! I absolutely loved it! Thank you so much for the amazing hospitality and just a downright joy to be around! That made your job that much better to be on! I can’t wait to come back next summer to help grind down the logs and finish you home! Great video! P.s. The best of Aaron's advice was to clear a fire defense zone around the cabin. Having driven through two big Alaskan wildfires, I can attest to the importance of the FDZ.

Luckily my property is mostly clear. Maybe only 20 trees around me that have to be taken down. Soon! But the FDZ is crucial!

Nice video Alone, I enjoyed the scenery shots. Your cabin is coming along nicely. A balcony will be a very nice addition so, you can sit out in the mornings having coffee or even having dinner outside in the evenings. Life doesn't get much better. Thanks for sharing. By the way, it's raining like hell here right now.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
The good thing about "scenery hunting" in Alaska is you don't need a license and you never get skunked! The balcony some day will most likely be one of the most used parts of my cabin. And I plan to have it screened from mosquitoes and possibly plexi glassed for winter. That's a project for another day sadly! I hear you on the rains John! It's been coming down pretty hard until today! Thank you so much John!

We just bought a house in Alaska. We have done some structural reinforcing, painting, redoing all the floorings, completely demo’ing the kitchen and bathroom, and now we are focusing on electrical. Oh, and we’re clearing overgrowth to both provide a firebreak and improve our view. We were working on a new driveway access but the excavator broke down. That’s now next year’s project. Lol

Congrats on securing some property in Alaska! Good move! Sounds like you have been very busy! Maybe the excavator breaking down is a good excuse to go fishing! On the artic door you could fill the cracks with the spray foam and tack or drill and nail furring strips lengthwise over the cracks then paint the whole door and it will look like it was made that way.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I will definitely fill the space with something and use wood strips to enclose it all. I may be a bit "spray foam" shy but it will work the best! Just imagine how beautiful that is when the fires going! And how comfortable you will feel!🙏🏻 It’s so good too that you found someone like Aaron and his crew to help you because we suffer with that a lot out here in Oregon we have good workers and we keep them tight to us but even some of those occasionally will drift off and people are very unreliable and don’t call back or show up it can be very hard. That’s only a small percentage in my case because I stay with really good people and treat them well but thank goodness for that. Also it looks like that cabin was not in good repair and I’m hoping that you will be able to sand it fresh and make it like new. Because it’s a lot of work you’ve got ahead.

Not everyone can vision what something can become. I am happy you could see the potential of the cabin. We bought a hold country church. Nothing fancy and in a remote use to be town…borderlined on being ugly even. But it was solid and well built and we could see past everything to what it could be. Your cabin is looking great. Your contractor is a sweetheart and very wise. Not only clearing the trees help stop the fire from jumping to your house….it also stops them from fallen 9n your cabin. We just finished dropping 33 really big trees from around our place.. Great video 🇨🇦🌷

Hello Lyn! Oh the vision I have of this cabin once all of the projects are done! It just wont look the same at all. Still rustic but improved! Your old country church sounds amazing! I bet you will turn that place into a real gem! I was lucky that my contractor knew Aaron as I believe they have worked together many times on other projects! Aaron and my contractor are just top of the line guys! Both SO professional and polite! And top notch craftmanship! The first day on my property I was walking around outside and noticed that one of those trees next to my cabin had snapped near the base and fell just missing my cabin. That one tree could have made my old cabin uninhabitable for the winter! So yeah I knew all the trees next to my cabin would have to go. Having a good fire defense zone and not having to worry about more trees snapping off will be another great relief. Thank you so much Lyn!

Happy Birthday Black Monday! Dear Alone, I've been looking for your update all day long! It's close to sunset here in Ohio, and I was thrilled to see your video before I toddle off to bed. It's been quite the eventful week, as I spend time planning for my seminar in NOLA, take care of my garden, and the pups were supposed to have a vet visit on Tuesday. Apparently, the vet decided to put it off until next week, so we go on Tuesday. ARGH! I have a contractor coming tomorrow to work on my plumbing. May I just state for the record that plumbing is evil? I have a leak in my shower that is dripping 4 gallons of water every day. As long as I can collect it and use it for the garden, that's not bad, but when I'm gone for a week at my seminar, no one else will do that - and I'll pay for a lot of water that will just go down the drain. The contractor is going to fix this mess for me so I don't have to worry about it during the winter. I talked with my boss about the upcoming school year the other day - and I may be changing grade levels. I'm not exactly thrilled by that option, but he's doing it because he knows that I can handle the behaviors and get the kids on track for graduation. I teach in a school for kids with major behaviors, and I'm in an autism/cognitive disabilities classroom. Out of the 7 kids in that room, 6 have behaviors that are not going to be productive on a job site. 3 are physically violent, 2 are sexually aggressive, one has such significant ADHD that he cannot sit still or be quiet for as little as 2 minutes at a time. If all goes well, he's going to be hiring a friend of mine to work in our building as well - and I think this guy is going to be a fantastic addition to the school as a whole. I love the doors in your home - they fit the space very well. I also love the idea that if there is a fire in the cabin overnight, you will be able to escape the building through the door in your room. I would imagine that the snow gets deep enough that you wouldn't get hurt jumping out. It also provides you a safe hunting blind from which to get your moose, mountain sheep or bear to fill your freezer! I'm guessing that if you were going to Valdez, you were going to collect your son and bring him back with you. I know that spending time with my adult sons is one of the joys of my life. Have an enjoyable week, and we'll talk again on Friday!

Hi Deb! A hunting platform is the first thing I thought of but sometimes we get too attached to the animals that bless us with their presence. It's up to each of us to decide. I would harvest a moose for sure. Your job sure sounds challenging. Best of luck in the new grade.

Hello Deb! Sorry for that late upload but I had to try the upload 3 times! It would just sit there and no longer upload for some reason! Very frustrating! Always something out here! LOL! Also sorry for the late response! And yes! I believe plumbing is evil and I refuse to have it in my cabin! Everything is always great until those little leaks! You could put a 55 gallon trash can to collect water while you are gone! That's almost two weeks worth of water! Then small buckets outside to the garden! At least it will be fixed before winter! Whew! It was odd that this cabin only had one door! Even more odd that I had to plan to have 3 doors installed. One being the trap door to the root cellar. I hope I never have to worry about getting out of my cabin quickly due to fire but I have to have multiple escape routes and ways to get Kenai out as well. I hadn't thought about hunting from the balcony but I certainly can do that! Congrats on your boss having confidence in you to handle some higher grade levels with some students that will need more attention than most! Sounds like you will definitely have your hands full though! It will be an interesting year! As for my son, he will not be here for another 6 weeks or so. But he will definitely be in my videos when he is here! I have a lot of work planned for him but I do plan on showing him around Alaska a lot as well! The least I can do for him driving all my stuff up here! Thank you so much Deb!

I was pretty lucky that my contractor knew Aaron from previous jobs he asked him to work on. I can see why he would keep Aaron's name handy! Aaron has the same passion to get my cabin fixed up correctly as my contractor does. I trust them both and that is why I have allowed them to use the bunkhouse this winter for a hunting spot should they choose to. I have so many plans for this cabin! SO many! My next video may be about all of the remaining projects I have planned. Some are kind of wacky! The fire defense zone will get completed soon! Luckily my cabin is mostly done. A dozen or so trees on each side and it's good. But I will get those trees cut! Maybe even on video! Thank you so much Chip!

This will be my first winter with very little to worry about as far as the structure goes. I have to take down at least 2 dozen trees soon myself! As for the isolation, I love it! I don't mind company but just having everything quiet and being here alone is what I had always wanted. Actually being snowed in was enjoyable. But absolutely having a dog (or cat) helps tremendously! I don't ever really feel alone because of Kenai. I mean he does rely on me for everything! But Kenai is a great companion! I did hear we may be getting a AU$20 fnight increase this Financial Year ... so look out my dear, I might be able to slip you half LOL . Unreal how screwed up our world system is. Grrrrrr. At least we both have a roof over our head and while you fight the cold I fight the heat. It's only the lower half of Aussie that has snow. I was living in a wee country town called GUYRA in Northern Tablelands in NSW in the year 2000 and that winter May -Aug they had SNOW. Took me back to my childhood in The Catlins Sth Otago New Zealand where I grew up with 6 siblings in very meagre amenities, an outside bucket dunny, no hot water in the tin shed bathroom. A good old coal/ wood fire, wet back stove , no washing machine, no refrigerator. But a very dedicated Daddy as a farmer of mixed animals and Dairy that was CREAM SUPPLY. Our usual mode of transport was the wooden back od a big old truck truck that carried everything or a trailer behind the tractor. We knew we were poor but so was most wveryone else out on the land so it didn't matter. Everyone helped everyone else. Hay-making season all the farmers did the rounds in between their daily chores milking and feeding pigs, moving sheep. Took our sheep to the neighbours who had a shearing shed, Daddy collected the skim milk from each farm who didn't run pigs, in the old tractor & trailer. Boy that was the life !!!! We lived ŕough & tough but Mother taught us all manners that you'd never geļieve. " You never know when one day you may be invited to dine with the Queen", was Mothers motto. And she raised us under the love and Truth of Jesus andcthe reverential fearbof Almigjty God. "Better your heart be in obedience to God Almighty for eternity than to be living in sin and the fear of the Devil". Ah those were the days YES what a far better place it was then than it is now. 👏👏👏👏 Enough reminiscing my friend. Forgive me for wandering off down that path . I do so enjoy your sharing so much with us I tend to forget it's not just the 2 of us having a yarn LOL. I love tracking out where all my "friends" are all over 5he world. I'll never get there but I enjoy trying to pin point everyone's whereabouts. I had a person travelling in a vehicle come up on my FB or YT screen the other day so I watched & listened for a bit. Seems there was a semi truck n trailer displaying some road rage by not allowing anyone to pass him. Bit unusual, but as I watched and listened ii realised j knew preciselycwherecthey were between Tulsa & Oklahoma City as they approached the turn off to Bristow ... a town a couple of homesteaders use as their base for posting up videos in Kmarts carport there etc. Our phones and the internet have made it a VERY small world. I’m an aircraft dispatcher for wildland fires, solid advice! I cringe when I see trees right up next to homes. It seems to be a dream that people have to live "with in the trees" and with winds and snow alone that is just dangerous. But for fire protection it is absolutely crazy. I would want any firefighter risking his/her life to protect my cabin to know that I did whatever I could to make it easier on them and that I at least tried! Cut down dead standing and clear the area of debris too! And my cabin has 6 fire extinguishers inside and a 500 gallon dedicated water tank just for outside fire suppression. After my chimney fire I am a bit paranoid! 😁 And thank you for your service! 🧡🤗💚

Arrrh I remember when myself and my ex spent 7 years renovating an old farmhouse in Cumbria 🇬🇧 that was nicely remote, at the end we decided to do the roof! And installed scaffolding, we were very hands on the whole time to keep costs down, my favourite thing was sitting on the scaffolding high up looking out day or night. Made me think I would always have a rooftop or balcony area if I could. Sadly I live in a small rented bungalow now! But rural 🥳. You are really getting there Alone, such joy and magic opening up. Loved the Comics in the wall. As we renovated I placed things in the structures, including a letter with our names and when we had lived there, what we had done etc. there was jewellery bits and bobs and pound coins! Especially in the rural stone walls. Aaron is such a great guy, a defence zone is spot on. Miss my old place, but relationship changes meant we had to sell at a £150,000 loss 😔, he wanted to be closer to society with pubs and shops he could walk to and had anger issues😳! Shame thought I would be there for ever. Hugs x🤗 Happy Birthday Black Monday 🥳x

WOW! You did all that work and had to sell for a loss! That just isn't fair! It's too bad you couldn't keep it yourself. Not sure how life close to pubs and shops could even compare to living remote! But at least you are rural still! There is something about sitting that high up overlooking the property isn't there!? the comic was nice but only worth about 10 bucks! I really should put notes or something in the walls. I am hoping that my property becomes generational so who knows what a future family member may find from me! It would probably be another "to do" list!! Aaron is great. I have never seen him on the show Building Alaska but I bet he was a nice guy there too! Thank you so much!

Mosquitoes are on a whole different level here. I mean we had mosquitoes in Colorado and I have seen other places where mosquitoes are worse but it really does alter the way you can do things out here! Wear mosquito spray or long clothing with a net over your face etc. As for the balcony, it will only have access from the inside. No stairs. Most of the rotted logs simply means what we could find. And especially the obvious ones. I keep an eye on all parts of my cabin. Not necessarily an inspection but I do look out for problems or things that could be potential problems. Thank you so much!

Aaron was spot on with advice for a fire perimeter. Even though we live at opposite ends of the country, occasionally we get a dry spell & I worry about forest fires. My property is in an oak/hickory forest that surrounds my house. I’m so grateful for the humid summers & the downpours of rain from t’storms that we get. The advice for a mosquito fogger sounds practical but the fogger does not discriminate between a mosquito & beneficial insects. Alaska is known for its pesty flies & skeets but a more benign mosquito control may be in order. A CO2 machine that covers 1-2 acres may help keep the population down right around the cabin.

Hello Deb! Aaron was correct about completing my fire defense zone. I only have about 2 dozen trees to remove which I will do very soon! As for the mosquitoes, they really are insane here! I will not use an industrial fogger like I showed in the video. I am using canned foggers and they only seem to work for about 20 minutes and only cover about 20 feet. Next year I will be waging full on war against the mosquitoes! More natural stuff but some chemical. Maybe even some birds, bats and dragon flies! Mostly trying to keep the mosquito from being successful hatching the eggs they lay. I do know about the CO2 machines running on propane. I will be looking into them as well! Thank you so much Deb!

I was very lucky to find my contractor and that he turned out to not only be an honest one but a very top of the line craftsman too! It is amazing that people from all over the world enjoy my channel. I never thought my channel would ever get this big! And it's still growing! So I always get my video ready for upload on Thursdays but ever since summer started (and all the tourists) it seems that Thursday's and Friday are iffy. Usually I can get the video in on a Friday though! Thank you so much Frederick!

I have a few suggestions for your consideration. My first one relates to indoor fire safety. I saw in one segment that you had a fire extinguisher mounted on a wall, that is a good thing but as best I can tell it's some version of an ABC dry powder extinguisher. Those are good and effective class extinguishers but the dry powder is a bit caustic and can leave quite a mess to clean up beyond the damage the fire will cause. While you will want to have plenty of these type extinguishers on hand I would suggest that you get at least two CO2 type extinguishers to be your first line of defense and use for quick knock down of the fire. CO2 extinguishers deprive a fire of oxygen while the dry powder classes of extinguisher, smother the fire. I am a long time boater, had done fire service work when I was younger and served in the US Coast Guard where we regularly did firefighting drills and periodically did actual firefighting training at shoreside fire training facilities. I say this because I might suggest you go pay a visit to your nearest fire station and ask if they can give you some training in basic firefighting skills using fire extinguishers and other tools and items you have in your cabin. Your situation is much like that of a ship at sea. You are your own fire department. If you have learned some basic firefighting skills and catch a fire as it is still in the early stages, you will probably be able to safely put out a fire before it can do much harm. One more thing on fire extinguishers, the Coast Guard just this year has implemented new rules regarding fire extinguishers. They now require replacement of extinguishers if they are older than 12 years old, where in the past, as long as the meter on the tank said there was sufficient pressure in the canister they could remain in service. I'd suggest checking to see when your current extinguishers were made and if older than that, perhaps keep them as last resort backups but replace them as your main line of defense. It was a good suggestion to clear away the spruce from the cabin and that you want to clear away the ground level growth to provide clear sightlines around your place. If you have not considered it or done so, I might suggest the installation of high powered LED light fixtures all around the cabin to provide a "shield" of light all around the cabin and grounds. That is good for safety and visibility when you must be out at night in the winter and for security concerns. One last thing that has nothing to do with what I have discussed so far, but if there is not one already present or it's in bad shape, you might want to consider building a cold smoking shed for fish and other meats. There are plenty of RU-vid videos on how to build on or see if Aaron will build you one. I know if I had an Alaskan cabin, I'd sure have one of those so I could have a supply of smoked fish and meats to get thru the winter. The place is looking great and what has been done thus far will surely provide peace of mind to get you through the coming winter.

Hello Michael! You served in the Coast Guard! Thank you for your service! As for the fire extinguishers, I didn't even know about CO2 extinguishers. If they deprive the fire of oxygen, is it a danger in confined spaces? Fire extinguisher use is something I definitely should find some training on. Luckily all of the fire extinguishers I brought or bought is mostly what I have in my cabin. I think the previous owners only left one and that may have needed up in the bunkhouse. But I will check the age of that one for sure. 12 years is a long time anyway. I will be clearing the trees to the left and right of my cabin (or should I say port and starboard) and I have motion activated LED flood lighting on all 4 sides of my cabin currently. Also 6 security cameras. A cold smoking shed you say? I have not heard of that. I will research that ASAP! Thank you so much Michael. So much awesome info in your comment! I love it!

I really like what you are doing with your cabin. It is looking good. Definitely clear the trees near your cabin. Also, contact your local fire department and let them know you are living there. That way if there is a forest fire, they know to protect your cabin from the fire. In remote areas, they only fight fires around structures and especially around occupied structures.

I would get the fence up asap so you can start working on your fall garden. I would get the sturdiest, tallest fence and put up the barb wire and electric fencing also. You need to be able to go out and work in your garden and enjoy being out there and letting your precious pet be able to go out with peace of mind. Hugs and love from a fan in North Carolina!

I don't know....maybe! But yes, I need to feel safe going out there for me and/or Kenai. Moose and bears will want to get inside the garden for sure! It's basically a free buffet for them! Thank you so much Pamela!

That makes so much sense to have a defensible zone around your house no matter where you live! I think a lot of people think a cabin surrounded by trees is ideal (and it is) but it's just not practical. First tree that crashes through your roof in the middle of winter, will change your mind quickly even if it's too late! Thank you so much!

Hello Alone. Another super update...quite a lot achieved since the last one. Aaron has done a superb job👍 His skills and experience have brought new life to your gorgeous cabin. His knowledge and suggestion of clearing the land around your home was brilliant practical advice. That is going to be interesting, to see the clearing. It must feel so good to have most of the rotten wood out now and when you get the outside structure of the house cleaned up and stained, it is going to be awesome....and who would have thought you would find a comic between the logs, there could be more 'treasures' to be discovered 😁. Going for the lighter colour, i think is an excellent idea. Being lighter, i'm guessing it will have the chance to gradually change, with the elements, blending in for an overall more natural look, rather than going dark from the offset 👍. The Norwegian sheepskin idea was a brilliant suggestion Alone. This type of addition to your home will suit very well and look fabulous, as well as functional. Your home is coming together nicely and I can't wait for each installment. I love the way you ended on a little cliffhanger 😁...I feel a lovely balcony coming on, for the next video, for sure 🤓. Your outside scenery is stunning and you are certainly living your dream Alone. Thank you for putting the music titles up, i love your background choices. With your CCTV installed, would you possibly consider doing some time lapse photography and maybe seperate nature videos of interesting wildlife visitors to your property? That would be cool. Well thank you Alone for another interesting viewing...I am so glad the other people didn't buy the cabin and pull it down. Have a good week Alone. Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Keep safe ☺️

It was good that my contractor knew Aaron and brought him on board for the the log work! What a great asset he turned out to be! Cutting in doors and getting rid of rotten logs was really needed for this project. Finding the comic book was pretty unique! To bad the comic was only worth about 10 bucks! The cabin color will be a cedar/teak color so it will really transform the look of the cabin! Like a new cabin was built instead! Along with the chinking, my cabin will literally look brand new. I like the sheepskin idea as it still keeps with the rustic look and feel. And will do a great job too! Sadly the balcony will not happen this year. I just couldn't fit it into the finances. But it will get built! Next year! Maybe! LOL! And no problem on the music titles. I have been asked more than once what music I use. The security cameras wont do time lapse but if I do catch any movement on video, you can absolutely expect to see it in a video. Thank you so much!

Oh, so fun to see my home decor in your video, all examples you showed is mine. 🇳🇴 My sister in law is more skilled than me. I would use linen for insulation, if you can get it, to fill in the gaps in the door - please no more foam! 😂 I am all for natural insulation, and cutting and sewing two or more lambskins together will give you the length to cover that door. Wow your house looks so different with the new roof and roofline! The renovation will keep your house for years to come. I agree with everything your builder is saying, especially clearing trees around your house, not only for wildfire, but in case of wind or ice storms, you dont want to have falling trees over your house. I would add that people considering moving to Alaska, or other harsh climates, stay a year, or at least try it out during winter, you might feel miserable and get cabin fever. Just a comment on the doors..(which look wonderful by the way) Our doors swing outwards, in case of fire. We have burglar proof hinges, but as my grandfather used to say, those who wants to get in, will get in. Not sure he was thinking of bears! 😉 Thank you for the video, loved the interview with your builder and the photo examples of nature and run down houses. 💕

I absolutely love the work you and your sister do! That's just a skill level I can only hope to obtain someday! But yes! NO MORE FOAM! My cabin has come a long way since I first got here! It has gone from a cabin with an iffy roof to a beautiful cabin with beautiful lines! I have so many projects left to do here to finish it up (if that is even possible to finish up projects! ) I will clear all of the trees next to my cabin for sure! I am definitely more worried about the high winds and heavy snow snapping trees and them landing on my roof! But a good fire defense zone is a nice bonus! I agree with what you said about trying it out. I think most people end up leaving this lifestyle (especially if you have heavy winters) because of cabin fever. I honestly don't get cabin fever as I am just too busy! And I definitely enjoyed being trapped in my cabin last winter! As for the doors, for bear defense it is definitely best to have the doors swing out. My only concern was if snow was too high and I couldn't open the doors. But I will be baring the doors from the inside (barricade brackets) top and bottom. And I will have bear mats by all doors and windows. Thank you so much!

I love this video. I have always wanted to own a log cabin! I have heard they are a lot of work to maintain, but well worth it. When we were in the process of buying our house here in Alaska, Sleepy Dog is where we went to meet our realtor and the workers were amazing. The coffee was great too! The weather has been so hot in Wasilla and so glad that we started getting rain now. Our garden was suffering from the heat and some of our plants were bolting. There were so many wildfires this month too. It got really smoky for a little bit by us. We couldn't see the mountains around us. Thank goodness for the rain.

My fence may be more like Jurassic Park but it will be strong! I have a couple dozen trees to cut down around my cabin to have that fire safety zone but I sure hope that is something I never have to worry about! I haven't noticed any smoky haze around my neck of the woods. Scary stuff! I love the thought you put into your videos! You two keep up the good work! Thank you so much Rick and Jacob!
