Great example of all the things you find and encounter when buying a used car. I've always equated it to an archeological dig, finding layers of past deeds done by 1 or more owners or shops.

I've clicked on hundreds of "Car" video channels on RU-vid and I can guarantee you that within the first 5 mins I say "Nope" to 90% of them when I see half-assed repairs or even shoving used dirty parts back on without taking the time to clean the area first. Maybe it's just my OCD but I consider it as showing some self respect in your work and the finished result. What all that rambling means is that I just discovered you and instead of saying "Nope" I hit subscribe. Good job. Thx.

Projects are the best way to get to know yourself and your abilities. People shy away from doing things themselves then complain when they have to take it to someone else to work on. The only way to learn is to do. This was a great video.

Eric, You are doing the right thing taking it apart. Most people might think you are crazy, but I've seen enough work that was supposedly done right, but it wasn't. You get a feeling, when you look at the parts of the car that are easily accessible, and discover that work isn't done right, you can bet that the parts of the car you can't see isn't done right either. Most of the time it's been put back together using even more shortcuts. Those shortcuts someone else did are just going to leave you on the side of the road in the future.

Great video as always. I haven't read through all of the comments, but I have a suggestion regarding flushing the cooling system. Get at least 2 five gallon buckets, a sump pump or some kind of a utility pump and some hose. Use some CLR and water or simple green, and let that circulate for an hour or two, then swap the hoses to flush the opposite direction. Run it for that long again, then flush with straight water.
@JohnDoe-sm9hc
@JohnDoe-sm9hc 2 года назад
The only thing I could add to his is to find the lowest points in the system and split it there -- gravity is your enemy even when flushing - once you have chunky stuff in the lines you want to open the lowest point possible to drain from --

As the starter replacement in my Envoy was a freaking nightmare as it's the 5.3 so think narrowed Tahoe, I replaced every sensor along the way. It reminded me of replacing the rear turbo in Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 when the factory manual was wrong. I actually liked turning wrenches and having customers that waited until I was available. My supervisors liked that too and rewarded us with bonuses, weekend getaways and other things not appropriate here.

I was happy to see you drop the hoist on the locks. One suggestion from a not fully successful flat rate tech, I use muffin tins for holding bolts. That way they are out of the way and safe, plus the order they appear acts a guide for remembering the order of installation.

The previous owner was talking crap in the comments section on one of the videos of him selling this car. I watched all his videos on this 996 and he didn't show his methodology, and parts used on this 996. He skipped alot of videos of the reinstall of the motor and I believed he rushed many pieces of it, parts and such to make a quick buck. Now watching your video, it confirmed my suspicsion of his craftsmanship. He skipped many steps and cut many corners. He also broke my rule of no worm gear clamps, especially on such a tricky motor.

If you’re using a two post lift for this or similar job remember that the balance will shift drastically so plan ahead. Try locking the lift arms into position so they can’t swing out away from under the vehicle, use a ratchet strap to span between both sides of the vehicle to keep them from slipping away if it won’t get in the way. Try to balance the vehicle for after the weight is removed when positioning. If possible strap the end that will get lighter to the lift arms.

Love your channel. 996 suffer from hotspots in the cylinder head usually in cylinder #1. It will start as a slight intermix mix issue and a slight rise in operating temperature but over time it gets worse until it is a full blowout. My happened on 996, got my head welded to get it fixed. While the motor is out, change out the 2 internal hall sensors. They go bad.

Watch out for the regular simple green, it can etch aluminium if you let it sit too long. Might cause trouble in a radiator down the line.. Simple green makes a "Extreme aircraft precision cleaner" that is safe for aluminum and plastic. Or aim for a mildly acidic cleaner like lactic acid (CLR), or citric acid (rad flush). Keep up the good work!

This actually makes me feel better about the concept of doing an engine-out on my Cayman if it's ever necessary. I've been in there deep enough to do an AOS and water pump, but the part of me the grew up wrenching on Fords and Chevys is still sketched out by the fact it's a euro car with the engine in the back. Good reminder that it's still just A Car (tm) - if people put it together, other people are capable of taking it apart.

The Intake gasket scenario is absolutely possible with new gaskets. Those O ring/ Rubber band style gaskets on german stuff always fall out when I try to do them, I missed it once on a mini cooper and it ran like trash. Advice for installation? A little bit of headliner glue on the gasket and manifold gasket groove goes a long way in cheap insurance for them not falling out like that, rather than trusting the tension of the groove when you're moving around 8 million different things trying to install an intake. EDIT: I've found concentrated simple green "Mean green" or Spray 9 to be very very good at getting intermix out of a cooling system, if you don't have a coolant flusher machine in your shop. Just dump some in and push it in with the hose or hot water, then go the other way.
@feron450

One good heater core/cooling system cleaning technique I saw on South Main Auto was to fill a 5-gal bucket with cleaner/scale remover and then use a small pump to pump the cleaner from the bucket, the through the cooling and HVAC systems and back into the bucket. Let it circulate for a hour or so in each direction. Should work a lot better than pumping in some cleaner and just letting it sit.

To clean the cooling system of oil do a quick flush with automatic dish washer detergent dissolved in hot water about a scoop .(warning eats alloys) Then do a flush with concentrate liquid dish soap in hot water about twice as much as to hand wash dishes. The a quick flush with white vinegar one large bottle in a bucket of water Then some water bicarbonate mix to kill the acid. This will remove the oil sludge and scale from the whole system. The first step is only needed for the first time cleaning of a oiled up system on a neglected vehicle. This may cause leaks if there is bad corrosion in the system. CLR is probably better for a corroded system.
