I'm a massive fan of Tears For Fears and have been since I first heard Mad World in 82. I loved this review, it was clear that for both you guys, Woman In Chains isn't a song you would usually listen to, but it was also clear that you appreciated the work that went into it, and I admire your honesty, and your appreciation of the artistry on display. For my money, Woman In Chains is probably them at their peak, although The Beatles influenced Sowing The Seeds Of Love comes pretty close. I always suggest to anyone who isn't sure about Tears For Fears, and only really know them for their two biggest hits, Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World, have a listen to Badman's Song, it is an 8 minute journey through pop, Jazz, and even Gospel, then have a listen to Elemental which is released under the Tears For Fears banner, but is really a Roland Orzabal solo project.

Hey Jon, Andy, Thanks for giving this an airing and I'm glad it's been well received. Like the two of you, TFF are not a band I would make a point of sitting down and listening to (I reserve such occasions for Talk Talk, Nick Drake and ,um.....yup, with a few exceptions, that's about it.) But I DO have a hundreds-deep, healthy Spotify collection of "liked" songs which I generally have on as a playlist when I'm just fannying around at daily rituals ...Life without music sucks, and silence should be enjoyed rarely). But every time this track starts, I stop peeling my potatoes and remember quite how beautiful it is. "Pretty", Andy called it. And so it is. I breached adolescence with "The Hurting" and matured past teenage-hood with "Seeds of Love"...those physical copies have long since gone to wherever they went, but through rose-tinted specs I'll always have a nostalgic soft spot for "The Hurting" and also this track which, as Arlopop so eloquently puts it, "It's all bombastic and overdone, but DAMN if it doesn't hit that pop sweet-spot for me". .

Amen to album no. 1.

Concluding my seasonal offerings for this year, unless I can track down that blues duet with iffy lyrics from 78rpm days - Dora Bryan - All I Want for Christmas Is a Beatle. It's a continuing mystery why that song has never been arraigned before the ICC in The Hague, there can be no possible statute of limitations.

Beautiful song. Oleta Adams voice is beautiful. I love the way this song builds. Timeless. (LOL @ Jon smirking when Andy starts talking about the drums. Little does Andy know - but he's actually spot on with his thinking about the character of those drums.) PS: Pale Shelter is the first song I ever heard of theirs and it's my favourite too!

I love TFF to bits. Every album is different and special to me, even the less critically beloved ones, maybe because they're relatively scarce. I don't quite know what it is about them, but there's always so many layers to enjoy, even on lesser songs - lots of little musical things and a feeling of quality as you both say. The Tipping Point is good. Roland's solo album Tomcats Screaming Outside was a great one, too - a really cool, dark album that seems to have been forgotten in the streaming age. Glad you enjoyed this song!

Hey guys! Happy Holidays! Great choice. Love this band. I didn't get to see them live before they originally split. So when they reunited, I made sure to see them when they played The Capital in Port Chester NY. It was before The Tipping Point was released. I hope they tour again. I picked up that album and it's really good, especially if you love their stuff. The title track and "Break the Man" are highlights. I'm glad you both appreciated this one, and if they tour the UK or US, go see them, it's a great show...

😅Excellent choice guys of one of the best UK bands ever, shame you didn’t react with the official video - very evocative! I don’t know if you have mentioned yet that Phil Collins played the drums on this track? Noel Gallagher even asserted that they are comparable to The Beatles! ( Sowing The Seeds Of Love could have been The Beatles in the ‘80’s. A track which also managed to weigh in on The Jam and The Style Council debate!) I have been a fan since ‘82 when Suffer The Children and Pale Shelter failed to break into the charts sadly. Thankfully after a remixes of these tracks Tears For Fears firstly released Mad World from The Hurting album and the rest was history. Songs From The Big Chair followed and their place in music royalty was confirmed, as Shout, Everybody Wants To The World ( if you haven’t heard the Urban mix,I thoroughly recommend that you do) and Head Over Heels were released to Worldwide appreciation. Both of the first two tracks went to no 1 in USA but sadly they never reached those giddy heights in the UK. To this day a large section of their fan base are Americans, Curt now resides there and the majority of their concerts are Stateside. Their last album release The Tipping Point is in my opinion an excellent lp and back to the level of their earlier work. Sadly I missed their gig in the UK, I had a ticket for, as Curt injured himself and the last few gigs were cancelled. I keep a hopeful eye that they will fulfill those lost dates sometime soon and add extra dates also. ❤😊

You know how it is, when you feel like you're the only person who knows and appreciates a particular song at a particular time and place. (Or maybe that's just me, because I live in the Antipodes.) Anyway, The Crimea with Opposite Ends (the slightly less frantic version - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l0Nu97WWUzE.html). This is the only song of theirs I know but I love the mood and the lyrics. Not sure if either of you will know it, but I think you'd both like it. And for when you get to them in the year 2028.... How about The New Pornographers - Use It. Or even Shriekback - Nemesis. 😁
