The saddest thing about totk to me was definitely the dungeons. Even if the puzzles themselves were lackluster, I was able to use the ultra hand abilities to skip most of the puzzles, specifically in the fire dungeon. I literally just phased through the ceiling.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
Slapping a theme on a divine beast doesn't make it a proper dungeon. Especially the Water Temple which is just more bland sky islands. I cannot believe Aonuma was confident enough before release that he had to make a video where he pointed out that dungeons were back. Being able to bypass puzzles doesn't make it "another way" to solve them, it's just a skip button. You're supposed to use brain instead of brute forcing it.

I used the hover bike. I was done with the fire temple in about 50 minutes and that includes wandering off to a tree root I saw in the distance and backtracking to Yunobu after I sequence broke him. And it's sooo patronizing whne I figured out the solutions before seeing the cut scene and then have Yunobu explain it at length and tell me how many gongs were left when they're marked on my map.

That's really the foundation of my frustration. Two years would have been alright, but for six I wanted a whole new game. I didn't have kids when BoTW came out, now I have two who go to school by the time TotK came out. When the next game comes out they'll well be on their way to middle school lol. Crazy how long game development is these days.
@Rancor9000
@Rancor9000 4 дня назад
@@LuluME1 What's crazy to me is that despite game development cycles being longer than ever, I find myself less satisfied on average with new games. It seems like games trying to be bigger means the dev resources get spread so thin that so often you end up with games that are like TotK--a mile wide and an inch deep. But maybe that's just my tastes. If I'm going to spend 40 hours on a game, I'd rather it be 10 4-hour challenges than 80 half-hour challenges.

One thing I try to do with new open world games is not watch or look up anything until I beat the last boss. Avoiding spoilers from my friends was a nightmare, but I did it. When I found something interesting, it actually felt awesome! Like when I found the giant robot companion, or finally stumbled on the machine copy-paster thing. But those very few moments didn't make up for finding disappointing reward dead ends almost every where else.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
That's... true for me too. I had most fun when I wasn't being expected to make my own kind of fun. It's kinda like the game wants you to make your own challenge run type of playthrough otherwise it's just "Flying Bike with Elf Twink Simulator".

I needed my friends' help I completely missed the glider on a quest for pants (missed the ones on the great island too) and didn't get it until about 20 hours into the game because my active questline had been switched as soon as I saw the first memory. I hadn't even talked to Pura(?) yet.
@noahblackburn62
@noahblackburn62 6 дней назад
Yeah, frankly I found the game disappointing too. I think if it could've made the sky islands bigger given a different design of Hyrule and added in more structured dungeons with unique rewards, instead of the over-reliance of shrines I would've had a way better time with the game. Not to mention I didn't like how non-consistent the framerate was, this was released how late into the switch cycle and still nintendo can't release big games like this in a consistent frame rate. I am not asking for it to run at 60 fps I just want the framerate to be consistent.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
Eh, now that you mention it the framerate does struggle. Especially with Ultrahand activated. I don't especially mind the shrines but I think there are too many and they're way too shallow. Less and longer with more engaging puzzles would be more like mini-dungeons to me. Oh and let's stop giving them the exact same aethetic too, it gets old fast but I understand it's not reasonable to make unique assets for every single one.

I guess some can appreciate the game for what it is and the other side feels that little care was put into all aspects except their cute green goo hand. @@LuluME1 I thought that they'd listen to feedback and remove the things or improve the things I didn't like, such as weapons breaking, resource management, and adding recipes for discovered cooking instead of manually making each iteration. @@LuluME1 Depending on the game, doing only the Legendary Weapon quests could take weeks (if most materials can be traded and at heavy cost) to a solid year. In Final Fantasy 11, the requirement for what they called "Relic Weapons" was to get a rusty weapon drop in a 18-man Dynamis raid (3 full parties) then to get multiple types of a currency and items from the same raid that a might grant a fraction of what's needed to all the players. It was so bad that guilds would pool every player's earning to give to a chosen player. And I think the raid had a cooldown timer between attempts (it's been almost 2 decades). And to top it off, they had multiple stages to upgrade to full power. I spent so much time mining zonite, I think that's about 1/3 of my total play time. It's SO repetitive.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
@@robinthrush9672 Geez that's insane. I knew MMO raids were hardcore but damn that's more than I expected ! Yeah unfortunately there's not too much to the Depths. You could say they lack... depth. I've always found the mining and cave exploring (where you break rocks to make a path) kind of janky and tacked on. Truthfully the Depths and the sky suffer from the same emptiness and lack of variety in the content they offer. It's an Ultrahand playground for me really.

Hahahahaha, wow my comment yesterday was perfect timing, wasn't it? You know I love this game, I know you don't, and my remark about how I really like this channel still stands. I'll spare you a wall of text where I whine about each of your points, but I will relate a personal experience, I had a dream shortly before the game came out, a dream of the game, but it was very immersive and basically VR because I was in it. That dream was so much better than any game could even be right now, and when I woke up, I was like "......oh no, I just ruined this game for myself, it won't be nearly that", but actually it didn't matter. I just clicked with the vibe of TotK, the colors, the heavy use of that teal, the distractions, how Link was finally getting some recognition, but also others didn't know him, reflecting the size of Hyrule and Link's quiet humble heroics. It clicked with me in a way that I could relax with it and be immersed. I think the crafting had a lot to do with it, I think if you liked that then immersion was easier in this game. It seems like a lot of people didn't click with certain aspects, especially crafting, in a way that left them just beneath immersion, which can be incredibly souring, and particularly annoying.

I just love reading well constructed messages like yours. Funny I had the same kind of dream for "Monster Hunter: World" and was anxious about my expectations for it. When I started playing Tears, I was really excited. I loved the Great Sky Island and was super hyped to know what was happening in Hyrule. I kept my enjoyment for it for a long while and was super emotional at the final Dragon Tear cutscene which prompted me to rush to Ganondorf and finish the story. In retrospect I had a good time with it. But unfortunately after all was over I pondered for a long time if I really liked the game that much. Suspicions turned to doubt when I was listening to people's opinions, good and bad and I leaned towards the negative side of the argument. But perhaps it's simply that in the end Tears of the Kingdom simply wasn't the story-heavy Zelda I wanted. I'm really harsh on Tears perhaps unfairly because I feel somewhat hurt by the missed potential of some of its feature (frankly if the Sky was as interesting as the Overworld I wouldn't be bitching at all. All I wanted was fun celestial adventures). In the future I'll revisit the game, probably stream it and see if my opinion changes.

@@LuluME1 My biggest problem by far was the underwhelming sky islands. When I found out early on that Great Sky Island was the largest island, I was not happy. I wanted to go to really large islands, starting on the largest was a bad idea in my opinion. Contrary to many, I really liked the Water Temple because it was a large sky island that was super high up and subverted my expectations in a good way when I realized it was the Water Temple.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 5 дней назад
I see. When I arrived at the ancient Zora Waterworks I thought THAT was the Water Temple. I kinda feel they use the "temple" name to try to make them feel more like actual dungeons but I thought that was kinda cheap. It works more in Ocarina of Time due to its retroness but feel out of place in a game where these locations have clearer purposes. Would have liked names to be more like Twilight Princess like "Goron Mines" or "Snowpeak Mansion". Kinda nitpicky on my part though lol. But yeah I thought that for sure the bigger sky islands were way up outside my field of view.

I feel the game is very similar if you do not engage with its sandbox too much. I'm not surprised you felt no impulse to explore the world again. As I said in the video I thought the majority of the game would take place in the new sky layer. I wanted a sort of Zelda Galaxy I guess.
@rareosts5752
@rareosts5752 6 дней назад
Oh just a random aside, I think a lot of people are mainly focused in the good/bad discussion of this game, but few are analyzing the actual game, like the messages. Not lore, but other stuff like a theme running through the game about not forgetting history, respecting time-tested aspects of culture, recognizing how many good qualities about ourselves might find their foundations in your civilization. I feel like this was a Japanese love letter to the West in that respect. Also, there's a clearly gay gentrifier in Lurelin Village with female animations, which I found hilarious and potentially quite controversial, but no one talked about it.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
That's a good point there. I'll admit I'm not really intellectually inclined in thinking about messages or themes too much. Having people like you who point out interesting behind the scenes aspects does help enrich the discussion outside of frustration-filled videos like mine lol. I thought before about trying to make brain-brain content but then I figured it's like asking a toddler to not get pissed at the wrong flavor of yogurt. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings Rare. I'll try to keep an eye out for underlaying themes and messages next time.

Characters like Bosen (I think that's his name) are pretty common in Japanese products. Puni Puni Prisoner in One Punch Man, Seiryo Tennan in Tenchi Muyo! (though he's straight, he's pretty effeminate), the little sister from The Shape of Voice/A Silent Voice is a distaff version of it. I thought it was lazy and uninspired outside the combat (Minus the continual crafting of weapons, which was a time sync that really slowed the pace of exploration and progression) Nintendo is going to keep doing this crap because people like you are disregarded because rose colored nostalgia. I came away with the same disappointment. After I heard TOTK was delayed when Elden Ring came out, I was thinking this could be a good thing. Maybe they realized how bland the world in BOTW was compared to Elden Ring or perhaps the enemy diversity. What is the rule for good open worlds? Every 15 seconds of travel time, you should be able to see or do something interesting? They failed miserably especially because they already had everything they needed. They already had the physics engine, the assets, the world, the lore, yet they didn't do anything to make it look like Hyrule progressed in those [7] years except maybe put mushroom hats on buildings, bastardizing my favorite town. Making me think I had a say in Hakeno's future, by deciding if I wanted it to stay old school, or be adulterated by that chubby fashion diva. But instead I had to both. I loved what they did with that Island village though, where you had to rebuild it. I wanted to see more quests showing the reconstruction of Hyrule... I wanted to feel apart of Hyrule, like my choices mattered. But nah. Long rant, sorry. You're right tho'.
@LuluME1
@LuluME1 6 дней назад
Reconstructing Hyrule is such a no-brainer with Ultrahand as an ability. I also was shocked how little the world rebuilt itself, Terry Town didn't really get bigger, the Hyrule Castle Town was still ruins ect. A lot of areas were straight-up downgraded for me, no lava on Death Mountain, fallen sky ruins everywhere ruining the landscape, tons of locations of importance for Shrine quests of BoTW that didn't get new usage and were just there in the world purposeless.
