In this video I make a small spigot in the longest way possible, with the purpose of pressing a pusher pendant tube out of a 6139 case to use elsewhere. I'm using the HOROTEC pendant pusher and the design is great, as it lends itself very well to custom tooling should you wish to make it.
The kit doesn't really have anything suitable for the 6139 pusher pendants, which need a small step, so I machined one up. It's kind of slow work on the Lorch 8mm lathe, but I like to do things this way at times to keep up the skills on the Lorch. I went with brass as the pendants are pretty delicate and I'd rather mash my spigot than the pendant. As you can see the brass tool worked just fine to get it out.
It's this sort of work where the cross-slide attachment really shines. It isn't terribly useful for most quick jobs you'd want to do in a few minutes. The better way to go there is to cut with the Bergeon carbide hand cutters.
The accuracy of the Lorch is incredible. Down to 3 decimal places. Not too important for this, but these little lathes, when in good condition, are just works of art. This is achieved by using coned bushes rather than bearings. So maintenance is critical. It's amazing to think these lathes were designed over 100 years ago and really didn't change a lot ever. They actually still make similar pattern lathes under different brands.
The tool I use here is a carbide tool I bought from Aliexpress for about $8US. It's been great. It zeros easily and loves to make chips. I have some other HSS tools and they are a pain when cutting anything besides brass. The Lorch doesn't really have enough power with the tiny motors to cut steel with HSS tools in any way that's particularly fun, when taking larger cuts. Small stuff is OK though.
This has been stitched together from several sessions in between other jobs.
As the video is kinda long, I've included a mix of classical music. It may be worthwhile just letting it play and checking back every 10 minutes or so...That said, people into tiny lathes will probably appreciate seeing someone use one.
