Another cassette deck that requires a fair bit of disassembly to do any work on it.

Very complicated machine and excellent quality. I even had some cassettes with the casing made of metal...think it was TDK's. Spent days on end playing with that. Can't remember the model I had until someone broke into my place and decided "that's the machine for me" Have a nice day tomorrow and I will spend some time watching the launch of the JWST.

DBX is way better than dolby (even dolby C)! I also own a Technics with DBX (RS-M255X), really sad that dolby took over... maybe licences were cheaper? On the other hand DBX was very usual in the professional world : external units with 8 tracks reel to reel or even integrated in small 4 tracks tape studios (tascam 424) for example. The downside of Technics decks of this era is leaky capacitors... there are so many, it's a really tedious task to replace them all. My Denon DR-M2 doesn't have leaky caps and no belt either!! It's nowadays my main deck for recording especially since I need my tapes to be listenable on my others decks/walkmans which aren't DBX equipped. Of course I never use Dolby since it muffles the trebles but always CrO2 tapes (UX-S mainly), hiss is in fact very acceptable on type II cassettes.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 2 года назад
Hiss destroys the sound. The storage medium needs to be transparent. On a good system, listening to a live recording you can place where the musicians were during the performence and there will be no added pops or hiss introduced. As soon as this happens it is obvious it is a recording. Dbx does a great job for analog tape. Dolby not so much.

A well built quality deck with a good spec. Servicing these type of decks is not a five minute job due the amount of dismantling required just to change the belts. Still well worth doing for the excellent performace they offer. Later decks with cheap mechanisms were not in the same league, and wore out very quickly. The old saying of "They don't make them like they used to" applies here.

@@Barbarapape that's the way it is, some things just never change! Everyone wants stuff done for nothing. That's the main reason I got out of the business. @@12voltvids I left the consumer repair trade for similar reasons, customers here in the UK are the same as yours in Canada. They argue about the cost of spares, then still expect it done for no margin. The local shop i worked for closed, so i went self employed doing repairs, which was great until i had string of non-paying customers. So i left to work for the MOD doing repairs for the RAF, decent wage and no customers to deal with. Hope you are having a great Christmas.

Now that was a pain just to get to the drive belt, thankfully the plugs/sockets were marked. Shame about the belt mistake, i was hoping it would work. But you didnt give up. From what i can hear, it sounds really good :-D. My memory has slipped, when you said "The solder i use is..." i thought Kester. Ooops. I have a reel of maplin solder from years ago and a reel of Multicore brand. You would think the reel was full of gold with the silly prices lol.

I used to use kester. Local place doesn't carry it but this stuff is every bit as good. That's why i have been using it for the past 5 years. This is the 3rd roll and if it was no good i wouldn't have gotten the second.

They made it so hard to get at those belts. On a similar DBX model from 1985.. I've been using my fingers to turn the gear on the left to play tapes - since I can't even find a supplier for the belt - it will play tapes but due to that same belt being a bit dodgy - getting some extra wow and flutter.. so I can't use it as my master deck for now.. - I could take it apart and recondition the belt and clean the surfaces which might extend the functions for a while.. but I'm afraid of damaging something (like @10:00) on reassembly likd I did to my AKAI 3 head deck which I destroyed perfectly - it still looks pretty but can't play a tape LOL . UG.

The first time i took mine apart i was the same way, but I have done mine now twice and now this one twice. No big deal now. I can do it in under 30 min if I am not making a tutorial video on how to do it and not fu*k it up. This one is a very good unit to service as aside from that belt it is literally bullet proof. One of my favorite cassette decks from all time and the recording quality shows exactly what they could achieve out of a 2 head deck.

Nakamichi were very overrated. There were quite a few that had far better performence. I have one if these and a JVC tdv1010. That's a 3 head dual capstan with direct drive main capstan and tension capstan is belt driven off the main. Both with very big flywheels. The only thing the JVC lacks is dbx.

Working on these is almost like working on mechanical clocks lol. Have you ever worked on mechanical clock movements like the ones for grandfather and mantle chime clocks?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 2 года назад
Yes i rebuilt a grandfather clock that I found at the side of the road. It's ugly, had been someones project they never finished. Got the moment working and set the regulator. Need to stain the wood and put the glass on the door. Sits in my kitchen. Did this before I was making videos. Have fixed a few mechanical clocks on my channel. One that uses a motor to wind the spring every 20 min (I have another one to do some day) and a westclox transistorised electric. It has a balance wheel, hair spring and escapement just like a conventional clock but no main spring. Instead the balance wheel has a tiny magnet on it and a coil on the chassis. To start it you just shake it (or pull the start pin on the back that sets the time, when you release it, the balance wheel is kicked. When the magnet on the balance wheel passes over the coil it produces a small induction which triggers the transistor which fires a larger voltage into the coil to repel the magnet to the end of his travel and then the hairspring brings it back and as it passes over the coil it produces another pulse which then causes the transistor to kick and propel the balance wheel to the other end of its travel and it just keeps doing this every time the magnet passes the coil it triggers the transistor which gives a kick which kicks the magnet away and so on and so on. Very cool goes back to 1965 or so, long before quartz clocks were developed and yet it is every bit as accurate as a quartz clock. Look it up there is a video on my channel where I took it apart and lubricated all the stuck gears and escapement. And I did it with three in one motor oil several years ago it hangs in my hole running constantly. One sea size battery lasts almost a year very efficient.
