In this video I do a short "lunch break" Techno Jam. This time I made a little exploration of MIDI 1U module from Intellijel and how it can be used as the modulation source.
Basimilus Iteritas Alter from Noise Engineering as the main voice. Elektron Octatrack as a live mixer. Elektron Digitakt as a drum machine.
I enjoy doing such breaks quite a lot!

🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focused mostly on Techno and House music. Thank you very much for making a tutorial about midi 1u from Intellijel, there is not a lot of information on youtube about this module. I learned a lot from this. We have similar setup :) Also great jam, love it.

Hi! Very interesting video! Could you tell dgkt learned cc message from modular synth or modular synth learns cc message from dgkt? I could not find any info in dgkt manual about auto-learn midi feature, may be it’s a new feature

Hey Den, Thanks for watching! It was the modular which learned from DT. More specifically it was MIDI 1U. Simply press "Learn" and send any MIDI info from DT (or any other MIDI sequencer). You can indeed configure DT to receive MIDI from any other controller or DAW. MIDI channels will control tracks. Also CC messages can be sent into DT to control a lot of params. On Page 66 you can find a MIDI breakdown of DT: www.elektron.se/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Digitakt-User-Manual_ENG.pdf

Watching this takes me back to Christmas time :) Question for you Ihor, my midi 1u isnt sending out a RST (reset) signal anymore, checked with my octotrack and digitakt both. I can’t figure out how to re-enable. You have any ideas?

Hey Kevin! Thanks for kicking in! Regarding RST signal. You could check if your DT or OT has Send MIDI Transport enabled, not only clock. Another thing you could check is if your module configured to receive RST or RUN. There is an config app on intellijel website for this module. And also manual how to use it. Rather than that I don't really know what could it be. Hope that helps.

Hey! I am glad you liked it! To be honest there is nothing too special about these drums, just samples from a sample pack. I think all the samples in this setup were from "Umek - Techno Foundations" pack.

@@IhorMedia ha, maybe it's a very good sample pack 😄. I just can't find the ones I like or the combination of different samples. Maybe I should look more into 'prepared' packs, instead of 'vanilla' samples from machines.

@@studio48nl I think it is a good idea to go for prepared packs, actually. Usually they sound good together. Also grab 808 and 909 packs into your collection. If I struggle to find let’s say a good sounding tom, fallback to 808 or 909 always works ✌️I think with a good search you can find both packs for free. Or they can be already included info the DAW if you have one.

@@IhorMedia thanks for your reaction. I actually have thousands of clean samples from machines. Bought many years ago from 'KB6' (15 years ago, maybe more). I think the issue is that it are so many of them. I have been starting to go through some of them and cherry pick the one I like, but they still need 'processing'. Also single samples alone does not say anything about how they fit. I might have selected the ones which sound nice by their own, but suck when putting them together 🤔. I have been looking at 'samples from Mars', but will also check the ones on loopmasters. I see the single samples from a pack can be ordered separately and are even not that expensive!

@@studio48nl creating samples or sample packs is a complex work, I think. I am not any good at it, honestly. Thus I go for sample packs and make music rather :) When it comes to putting them together so that they "fit" - yes, sample selection plays an important role. But do not underestimate simple (or even complex) processing on the sampler like amp envelope, tune, filter, FX, etc. My approach is to get samples sound at least "fine" and then apply some processing to shape them to fit even better. Look at @6:17 for example and the clap sound. It was too long and too harsh. Some quick tricks I made: shortened release on the amp envelope, tuned 2-3 semitones down, sent to reverb - done!

Nice, but i dont see what the modular brings to you set. For this same result, OT would have been enough. No injuries, just interrogative, cause i'm building a modular to pair with OT, and that's the reason i watch your vid. If you could hello in my research, that would have bien nice.

Modular brings a lot! Especially when it comes to sound design, sequencing, modulation and experimenting. This particular video might not be the best to demonstrate this. In this video I take a close look at the MIDI sequencing.
