You are absolutely correct. The signal strength is the same, but the 990x does have superior audio.

At the moment, the XHDATA D-808 is the only SW receiver I have. When I am listening at home (which is most of the time) I hook the 808 to my C Crane CCRadio 2e and then I have wonderful sound. I really want a 990x primarily for the aesthetics and larger size, but performance wise, it's hard to justify - not that I can justify most of my radio purchases any better... ;-) Great video. Tecsun costs 2-3x more than XDATA, but the difference is much smaller in performance.

I have my Pl600, PL330 and Digitech AR1780 all using a Panasonic active spur which gives very good audio quality on all receivers. Audio quality is easy to get, RF & IF is not. Cheers.

Think the difference comes from different speaker quality.
