I think this is an inexpensive way to explore the radio frequency bands, this radio seems to have a good following and I’m excited to receive mine after seeing your review 👍
Thanks for the SSB review on the XHDATA D-808 as it is one of the best portable shortwave receivers on the market! FYI, research Radiwow's other brand Sihuadon which is their newest brand! Sihuadon has a D-808 available that comes in a black case and it has a nice amber display which is easy on the eyes!
Great video i subbed, been into radios all my life its the best i ever seen for size price performance nothing touches it amazing on mw its weakest point would be air band but even then you get that band thrown in where others more expensive dont have it its a no brainer truly amazing radio love your straight up and down no bullshit how it is revies that are not an hour long.
Very impressive little radio. Very good to have SSB that works on a portable SW radio. Opens up a lot more fun. While there are better SSB radios for more money you won't be taking them to the park or listening on the hiking trail.
Yea I’m very tempted indeed. I have near on all the the Tecsun range (except the mortgage end one) and they are very good too. Do you recommend this one now you’ve had time to play? Certainly looks a nice set. Laurie
It’s a nice set Laurence I would always recommend it but if you already have Tecsuns you may not need anything else, unless you just fancy a new toy :) in which case YES :)
May I ask a question. Can u get normal CB on one of these? Search and rescue? International space station? I'm only asking as I fancy getting one. After buying a CB about a month ago and realising it's still dead out there I think one of these would be more fun to play with. Or could u give advice on a good beginner scanner that ain't gonna cost the earth.
Thanks for the comment .. good luck with the hobby. You can get cb frequencies on the radio but not the fm cb, only AM and ssb. You won’t get the space station as I understand but will get search and rescue. I’m not experienced with scanners, I’m not one of those guys with loads of radios but I suggest you start with something like the XHDATA and then see what extra you might need. There’s enough going on to keep you happy to start with ... happy radio :)
I am a Radio Ham myself, and I do not have a narrow mind as some do. So to some Hams you need an EXPENSIVE radio to be any good? Sorry I totally disagree. I have the original XHDATA D-808 with the filters and its really impressive. I can not complain about it. The radio picks up many stations, I compared it to my Icom-718 and my Kenwood TS-850S, OK to be totally fair of course the Ham radios win, but the point is this, when I put a 44ft external antenna to it, WOW it works very well indeed. I do not get any distortion or cross channel interference by using the SSB filters. And in all my honesty it gives the Icom and the Kenwood a good run for the money.
Are you saying the newer orange back-lit version has less filtering ? Certainly the speaker audio has less bass than the original which wasn't much to start with
A radio ham guy that dispenses with all the unbelievable snobbery. What a refreshing change. I bought one. Amazing radio and enjoying learning how to use SSB. Very good reception on SW comparing well with my R9700DX which is all manual everything but very sensitive. Actually I sent back a Tecsun 660 as being rather a disappointment. Could not even match a cheap little throwaway SW radio which is very sensitive on SW even with tiny pull out antenna. Not so the R9700DX. A very satisfying SW experience and its analogue-ness perfectly complements the XHDATA D808. Because it has no AGC cutting in constantly, tuning is more rewarding on weak stations. I then enjoy using the XH DATA to dial in and tune around that frequency till I find it. Because of BW selection I can often improve on the audio of the Tecsun R9700DX. Both fantastic sets offering complementary listening experiences.
bought that radio a few years ago volume was not up to much had to go to at least number eight befor there was any sound you should not have to turn that high untill you hear any thing i sent it back .
@@LONGINTHETOOTHtv Thanks, i thought reception you demonstrated was very good for the raw product! I'm considering various antenna types for this and a SDR. Just after viewing your video I received my SIHUADON D808. According to the maker its the same as the XHdata but a different name for patent reasons and incorporating some feature changes following XHdata feedback. No obvious differences noticed yet. I'm very pleased with it and it came with a 3m wire antenna too. Despite your handling of it I was under the impression it was bigger than is! I have a dipole in the attic space currently for an FRG7700 but reception at this home is not great and i need to rethink.
@@redf7209 I understand the FRG is a Yausu receiver. In my experience of general listening - you are unlikely to pick up anything on another rx that you can’t get on an XHDATA. Experimenting with antennas is your best bet. Happy listening:)
@@LONGINTHETOOTHtv Yes its a Yausu, I used it as a teenager and it seemed great at the time but picking it up lately It seems pretty silent now. My house now is in a bit of a hollow with lots of interference but also the MGhz bands covered by it are 1,3,7,10,14,18,21,24,28 and i think i'm missing out when it comes to the gaps. I've probably forgotten more than i knew but have the band areas we'd listen to years back moved to the missing bits? The receiver i just received covers these gaps and that seemed where a lot of the best reception was last night.
@@redf7209 broadcast bands abd ham bands remain largely the same but communications and pirates can operate elsewhere - it’s good to tune about… enjoy :)
You're doing it the wrong way, mate. Bandwidth selection on AM is distinct from SSB. If you select say 1 kHz BW on AM this does not impact the BW selection on SSB. You have to choose you BW AFTER you have selected SSB. Otherwise yes, it's a great radio, though the Tecsun PL-330 is at least as good and cheaper.
@@LONGINTHETOOTHtv honestly I was getting quite interested in picking up a SW radio but the more examples I heard the less enthusiastic I became… perhaps my brain is wired wrong… in this case I can’t make out much intelligent dialog except the odd word (maybe)… 😢
@@bradl2636 if deciphered properly ssb will sound almost the same as any am transmission- if you are off tune it sounds like the Martians have landed :)
