Angela Maiers is an education and technology consultant from Des Moines, Iowa who shares with us how two words can change a life.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I am writing a paper about this video for my communication class. This is such a great topic to discuss...because it is true! People's achievements are not recognized and therefore they feel more inadequate.

I will share this video, it relates to my END HOMELESS MISSION. Because PEOPLE MATTER to me I am sick and tired of what I notice happening with homelessness in this country. :-( Thank you for this video!! :-)

Isn't this more than just 'noticing'? Isn't this noticing with appreciation? Appreciation is a treasure, to both what is appreciated, and to those who appreciate.

Thank you! I truly do believe that everyone, every single one matters! It can be difficult to dole out these kind of beautiful compliments without someone thinking you are a kiss-butt or cheesy---but this really convinces me to just risk it and do it more. People really do need to know this.

Thank you, Angela for taking the time to notice the truth and distilling things so clearly and simply! What a beautifully wise talk that gets to the heart of what really matters. Echoed nicely in this Hafiz poem I came across recently (in the book Tattoos on the Heart). Enjoy! “Admit something. Everyone you see, you say to them "Love me." Of course you do not do this out loud: Otherwise, Someone would call the cops. Still, though, think about this, This great pull in us to connect. Why not become the one Who lives with a full moon in each eye That is always saying, With that sweet moon Language What every other eye in this world Is dying to Hear?” ― Hafiz

We might be insignificant to the course of history in the galaxy, but to the world we live in with the people we live among, we are enormously significant. Many times you may not be able to see it, but you never know.

Actually, we're all significant. The value and worth of a human being is beyond measure. It's not tangible. You can't measure it at all. Every human being is unique, and therefore, indispensable.

Use hempcrete as a medium and figure a way to use recycled tires, bottles and cans to cut down on required concrete medium. This will give the added benefit of sequesturing carbon by cutting down on concrete usage, heating needs, and lock in some of the already existing green house gasses into the hempcrete structure as the hempcrete hardens.

Unfortunately Rule #3 often does not apply to adults. "I depend on you to do this for me" will scare many of the husband or even an acquaintance (we commonly use the word "friend" too loosely). We all love to be admitted important... unless it requires an effort on our part for somebody else's sake. At least such has been my experience.
@Louisyed
@Louisyed 10 лет назад
But what if you do depend on others and you let people know that they matter...but you don't get the same in return?
@mplsUTUBE
@mplsUTUBE 6 лет назад
The focus is on the other person, the one who matters, not on yourself. It must be a genuine "you matter," so if you're looking for recognition or applause for your own self, perhaps you might want to cogitate on why you think your own self is the important one.
@Kimmehface
@Kimmehface 11 лет назад
I disagree...I think we all matter in some way, big or small, and everyone deserves to hear that just them exisiting is important. We all need that sometimes.

By all means then, carry on. Yet don't expect ppl to listen to the message behind your words because they will automatically shut you out based on the way you present your ideas. I'm all about doing the effective, logical thing if possible...It's good to have powerful ideas and opinions but even better to know how to persuade people to your side.
@Kimmehface
@Kimmehface 11 лет назад
U don't sound so responsible or intelligent urself when u comment like that. Plz don't "crap out" any human life any time soon. Ur future child deserves a more compassionate and insightful up-bringing. Once you grow as a person, I'm sure u will make a great parent as it seems you have pin-pointed some problems in our society and are determined not to make those mistakes. U also are clearly intelligent even though your language/attitude says otherwise.

It's hard to not feel accepted isn't it? I'm really sorry you struggle with it....it must be terrible. The best thing you can do is continue to work on accepting yourself and the right ppl will come to you like law of attraction and they will love you for you. If you work on discovering your light and shining it, eventually people will see it and come. This I promise you. You matter Terry!!!!
@icpchad
@icpchad 12 лет назад
... and yet---YOU felt the need to express this idea ... YOU felt like your voice mattered enough to comment. Why do ya figure that is?

@Seancarter2010
@Seancarter2010 10 лет назад
Why do people insist on sharing their negative thoughts. You aren't educating you aren't making anything better you're just trying to drag people in the mud with you. If you think this way of thinking is bullshit keep your negativity to yourself. No one came to watch a TED video to feel bad we have the news for that.
@Kimmehface
@Kimmehface 11 лет назад
(continued from previous reply)...There is still no excuse the way u presented your ideas...so demeaning and hateful. Don't take away from ur message with such negativity! It's a good point about our society and everyone's missing the message because of your approach.
@agreg375
@agreg375 11 лет назад
maybe if that child that was, as you said "crapped out" maybe if they felt they mattered by their parents or who ever, maybe they would do something significant. It's not the condition we came from but sometimes it takes someone else to see the good in someone to encourage them to believe in themselves. I'm sure you've made a lot of people feel insignificant from the negativity you write here...

This is just a lot of Christian mumbo-jumbo. It's nice to see potential in others, but wishing doesn't make it so. Her talk is really more about empathy and kindness than it is about productivity and practicality. And that's fine, that's OK. The world could do with more kind-hearted people, nevertheless simply saying you believe in someone will not magically make that person competent. Beware this kind of magical-thinking. And don't couch charity as productivity, it's a disservice to all.
@Kimmehface

Being rude to people and justifying it with values on honesty.... I hope that this hobby of your adds something beneficial to your life (release of emotions? needing attention? I don't know you so I don't know your motives)...because it is pretty ineffective and pointless otherwise. It is all hot steam you are blowing off....hot and annoying but easily forgotten with no substance to it.
