Daniel Johns is without doubt one of the best vocalists this country has ever produced. His talent shines through in this video and I for one am very proud of his achievements ! Well done mate - well done !
I remember when I first saw Silverchair on tv back in the mid 90s. I was about 13 myself. I never could have imagined he'd grow into one of the best songwriters of all time. Once Diorama came out, my view of his abilities completely changed. That is one of the best albums ever made..
The way Daniel's musical evolution has been tracking since Neon Ballroom had him destined for score compositions. Been a long time fan of Silverchair but lost track of the band members after their hiatus... So glad to see Daniel continuing to experiment, push new boundaries, never looking back, going further and more courageously every time. Composing for a musical is PERFECT, he's such a creative, brave, inspired writer! He's such a fantastic storyteller. I'd love to see him become a regular composer for many more adventurous, ballsy film soundtracks!!!
Love you Daniel Johns, I started playing guitar learning all your songs when FrogStomp was your only album , I was 15 at the time and I studied all your album even covered most of Diorama with my band at the time !! One of my all time favorite artists, I grew and evolved with you !!
Daniel Johns is Daniel Johns. Nothing, no one, nobody, anything , anywhere or any kind of comparison cannot even begin to hope to be on the same playing field as him. And if they are, they are not playing the same sport. The man is a genius.
It is not fame which he wants it is passion in music that leads him to a new direction...a masterpiece...he is really a genius... beethoven of the modern times...
Caught the news about Silverchair calling it a day, and after following them for 18 years was quite disheartened until I arrived here... Daniel sounds more liberated, and the collobration is potent.
This is brilliant. When my life feels gray, I think of this project, and I feel color. I love Daniel. And this guy, Josh, is awesome for bringing it about.
in art, in music, in work, in love, in play, everybody evolves...evolution is moving forward ! i like a line that is sung in the song, spawn again, "learn to evolve"...from an artists point of view, this is how we create...nothing more stifling than playing the same songs over and over again! and i think the idea is nothing more than brilliant...Story telling is like a language that we have used for tens of thousands of years, so bring it on! it is so easy to just tune out if you don't like it.
Oh my goodness! This was what I just needed to hear right now and also I've been waiting to see him playing the piano again. Daniel on the piano is a dream come true, a perfect combination. So awesome, so inspirational ...a deep bow!
This is pure magic. I always thought Daniel was big enough for films. If the work he did with Silverchair did anything, it showed genius, and it's almost like a format as big is ideal for Daniel to really show how much talent he is brimming. Silverchair will continue to be my favourite ever band, and I'm not just talking about Frogstomp. I love everything they've ever done. And I will continue to respect and love Daniel Johns, he's so inspiring. I can't wait till this is done.
I want to be in that village. I feel like everyone around me is trying to stifle my voice. I feel like I would fit in better there. Daniel Johns is brilliant and an innovator. "We're giving life to your heart." ... "We are completely ripped apart and remade." Love it. And Josh is great too. I look forward to hearing more about this project.
When I heard that Silverchair broke up I was so sad but now I see that Dan is doing what he does best still even without Ben or Chris. Silverchair can wait a couple years again if it means I get to see Dan make something as beautiful as this. I'm glad Daniel is doing this; I think he may have needed another break from Silverchair. That being said, I do hope they come back together again and find that "spark" that they lost for now. Dan, I'm glad you are making beautiful music still!
Daniel is just amazing!! Honestly it is crazy how much his voice has grown and changed since silverchair's albums frogstomp, freak show and neon ballroom :O I like his voice now.... but I just wish he could still sound like he used to
i'm was pretty speechless after watching this for the first time. it's even better than i thought it would be. now we get to wait forever for the film lol.
I like seeing Daniel move back to orchestral/piano-type pieces. It's very Diorama-ish. What's funny about that, actually, is that in an interview in 2002 he said what he was doing then with Diorama is something he wants to do in ten years time. Funny how exactly that happened.
Evolución. he done 5 different and very good albums...does any musician can do that? Very difficult. He can whrite 15 differents frogstomps if you want it, but hes brain goes so fast and every were, let the artist do his stuff, if you like it good if you dont.you can go and listen a.90 's playlist o Spotify my friend. Cheers from argentina
11 years later Daniel would name the outro song of this video Those Thieving Birds pt. 3 and make it the last song of his latest solo album FutureNever
PS: I have this image of daniel's house in merewether being this fantastical escapism of creative wonder, after all the songwriting and collabs he's had done there over the years lol. Success happens on your own home turf, I guess!
I've been listening to this multiple times a day since I first saw it. I really can't wait to see more of this project. It truly is incredible so far...
@Spedly - I thought better than to mention it in my previous post, but there's definitely some Jeff Buckley going on in some of Daniel's new work. I don't really want to compare the two, as Daniel's style is his own, but there's a few parallels, and that is a big positive for me.
Many of the talks from this event were given by artists (Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins.) This talk IS all about 'innovation / spread-worthy ideas / invention / inspiration.'
At 10:50 he said Australian story-tellers end with question marks. I came across this video right after I finished watching the movie Candy, a 2006 movie with Heath Ledger and an Aussie cast and crew. Interestingly, the movie indeed ends on a question mark. It's sort of like ending on a 'suspended' second or fourth chord instead of the dominant tonic chord. American film/music, on the other hand, is all about "Good" beating "Bad" with no confusion as to which is which. Much less interesting.....
Kurt Cobain and Nirvana signed to a major label and made 'corporate bucks,' they never denied that fact. Artists deserve to make money from their art and if I have to rip a Daniel Johns song from a Qantas ad to listen to it then that's just fine by me.
@banzy3 I agree, and that pleases me. Daniel and Jeff are both just so truely inspiring. Daniel is my idol and Jeff was purely amazing. Daniel is the reason Im a musician and I named my dog Grace, and have Jeff's signature tattooed
I'm hoping the people from the Adelaide Festival release a DVD of his performance last night. I heard they didn't let people take pictures or record anything..
