This is one of the three songs on their albums during which Page used a violin bow to play the guitar, which was that stretch you heard in the middle. The other songs were "Dazed and Confused", which you've already reacted to, and "In the Light" (on the 6th album). Album 1 was recorded in about 36 hours during the fall of 1968 and dropped in early 1969. Album 2 was recorded in between the band's many concerts throughout 1969, and was dropped in October of that year. They were certainly a very busy group of guys their first year together, but they never really slowed down much. Thanks for another great reaction. Glad you enjoyed this song and looking forward to your dive into album 2. :)

@@IZZY_EDIBLE If I recall correctly, he used a Gizmotron for the recording but a bow during live performances since the Gizmotron is more "unwieldy" in that it uses small, motor driven wheels to make the strings vibrate.

One of the things bassist John Paul Jones was proud of was how well Zeppelin could groove and get people up and moving. This is a mashup of at least two blues songs such as The Hunter by Albert King and Booker T and the MGs as well as Howlin' Wolf's How Many More Years. Yes, the part in the middle is the guitar being played by a bow. It's awesome that you share your musical appreciation with family members. It's a great way to keep in touch with other generations and other genres of music. Well done!

In the book "Hammer of the Gods" there's a part where Plant talks about the first time he realized the band could become huge. I think it was on their first tour of America, in a club in Boston. They were playing this. Heading into the finale, Plant was singing with his eyes closed. He felt someone poke him in the ribs. He looked up. It was Page, who pointed towards the audience. The entire front row was guys standing at the edge of the stage, banging their heads against it in time to the song. Heh...

Silas, think about this: When Robert Plant song How Many More... He was 19 years old. Bonhan, 19 to. Page y Paul Jones about 23. Really young people to make this kind of music, to sing with that voice, so especial voice. They four still make me feel the real meaning of this word "genius"

@jmar7631
@jmar7631 2 года назад
I've seen references to Page using a cello bow but I had always thought he used a violin bow so I did a little research a while back and found an article in "Reverb" in which they quoted him from interviews. "Following the sessions for their first album that included his use of bow and Telecaster in "Dazed and Confused" and "How Many More Times," he told Melody Maker: "I use an ordinary violin bow on the guitar, given a little more tension on the horsehair than one would employ for violin playing, plus lots more rosin. It gives an infinite variety of sounds, ranging from violin to cello and from a whistling wind to a Boeing 707 taking off." When Jimmy picked up the bow on stage, it certainly provided visual drama, and "Dazed And Confused" provided a live showcase for the style, as seen in the footage of the band at London's Albert Hall in the opening weeks of 1970. Jimmy was nonetheless keen to underline the musical importance of the technique. "When I use a violin bow on a guitar it's not just a gimmick, like people think," he told Chris Welch at the time. "It's because some great sounds come out. You can employ legitimate bowing techniques and gain new scope and depth." Edit: The article was posted in May 2020.

Although most of Zeppelin's catalog, like the Beatles, is not that difficult to play, it is the cleverness, and the swagger in which it was originated that makes it special. Another of Zeppelin's gifts, (like many other greats) was their ability to improvise and jam, and stay completely tight as a unit. A musician telepathy forms in certain groups that makes magic.
