I suffered emotional, verbal, and physical abuse everyday growing up and I never raped or killed anyone. That’s no excuse. If anything it should give you more reason to be sympathetic towards people.

If you'd rather him be given the death sentence, tax payers would just be paying more money. The combined costs of legal fees during the trial and a (most likely) appeal process, would be more than a lifetime of prison provisions.
I do not see a reason to imprison someone for the rest of his entire life. They should just be put to sleep and buried. Why keep them in a cage for the next 60 and spend millions keeping him alive when he will never be a productive member of society again. His crimes are disgusting and evil and there is no reason to keep him alive. I don't care what color he is either. Killers come in all colors and they should all suffer the same fate.
It only costs more to keep them on death row because they keep them in there for 20 years waiting for all the appeals to run out. If they would put a time limit on that then they could go to the death chamber within 5 years, which is really all they need.

Boss Man That is true but there are stories of people in max security prison who had 4-5 guys run in to their cell to either hold that individual down and have turns raping them or holding them down and suffocating them with a pillow and keep in mind if this even gets reported it will take guards 2-3 minutes to respond
Yeah, I agree with that but when you abuse a child it can affect them so profoundly that you're basically creating a weapon and pointing it at people. Not everyone who is abused is going to grow up and hurt people, but everyone has a different capacity for dealing with things. For some, they grow up and rape their sister and kill people like this guy did. I know what you're saying and he is responsible for his own actions, but I often wonder what kind of person I would be if I was abused as a child. I'm just saying that without the abuse, this kid likely would have grown up and been a decent person.
I don't agree at all....I've seen time after time, kids coming from bad upbringings to be successful and good people....I'm one of them.....that's why we have an age of "adulthood"; when you get to that age, it's not going to matter what your dad did the times he got mad at you or the time your uncle touched you; it's all YOU at that point. No excuse.

One thing I’ve learnt from poverty and neglect growing up is 1) work out my butt to escape poverty and not perpetuate it. 2) show love to all irrespective especially my kids 3) not to get into trouble with the law I.e be a model to my kids and my community

Rehabilitation is not a "liberal " concept. All sorts of people believe in it, work in it or study it, and we have different political opinions. Abuse is not an excuse, its simply something to understand and try to prevent. I used to be against capital punishment but for these 2 people, its really hard to not want them executed.

I understand long sentences - they aim to rehabilitate people. But I don't understand *life sentence* with no possibility to get out. In that case (as it's irreversible) they deserve putting an end to their lives - they literally just waste taxpayers' money for their shitty lives in prison, for having done something terrible anyway, with *no chance* of rehabilitation. Utterly pointless. Bring back execution... Less suffering, less money.

I was verbally, physically, emotionally and sexually abused as a child and grew up in extreme poverty but I made a success of my life in spite of it all. Most people with horrible childhoods grow up to be responsible decent adults without robbing, molesting, raping, violence or murdering anyone. It's not that their terrible childhood experiences didn't affect them, they just wanted to break the cycle.
I agree but it really could go either way. The psychology of the mind is very complex and no 2 people will deal with trauma the same way. It doesn't make it right but it can provide a template for why this person is making their choices. And I'm sorry to hear what happened to you. That is sick and it shows how strong of an individual you are to make better choices.

I'm wondering, would it change anything if he did feel remorse? Would they lower is sentence? I mean the process of punishing people is so they learn. What does someone learn from a life sentence, or a death sentence? If you're going to give them those sentences, then who cares what they feel? It's irrelevant whether they feel remorse or not at that point. It won't matter because he won't ever be out again.
