Something to note is that the term Transracial originally applied to people of a specific race being adopted into families of another race - which is an important facet of many people’s identity
It's crazy that the entire definition of trans-racial has changed🤯 it used to mean someone was raised in a different racial heritage, i.e. a black child being raised by a white family.
these people didn't grow up getting told their homemade lunch with kimchi and fish in it was "disgusting" and "smells awful." they didn't have people go up to them and pull their eyelids back saying "ching chong" to them. they weren't the ones getting attacked for "eating bats" and "causing covid" in 2020. they just want the supposed "benefits" of being Korean because its attractive to them but don't realize the actual discrimination those people face, which is what i think is the most insulting part of the whole RCTA thing. like not to say that you have to go through all that awful crap to be a "real Korean," but its clear the way these people victimize themselves for being white that they don't even take any of the actual racism going on towards Asian people seriously
Dude I'm argentinian and I've been living in usa for a few months, and one random girl from school sat down besides me and said like "Hi. I heard you are latina. You dont look good trying to play white. Don't wear that. Own your culture 😊" I was wearing a maxi skirt and a sweater. How is that me trying to be white/american??? Like, girl. Shut up. Luckily I became friends with a hondurian girl, they put us together in spanish class lol like "well here you go, another spanish speaking person", and she told me that this girl was a bit obsessed with being considered latina, cause she had ONE mexican grandparent.
as someone who is east asian adopted into a white family… i cannot even imagine what this trend would’ve made me feel as a teenager who deeply resented being asian. anyone who genuinely has this mindset has no idea what kind of discrimination asians in the west experience nor do they have any real understanding or respect for our cultures (exemplified so well by how they love to flatten japanese tv and korean music and chinese makeup all into one asian image). i also do honestly believe that the majority of rtcas are trolls lol.
I think this is definitely something deeper. I know that a lot of people dislike ethnic features of their communities that they can’t change without surgery. These community’s are for sure full of young people and teens who have such high insecurity and want to change their race to somehow become a different person and think that changing their race would make their life’s so much better. This is obviously a delusion and an escape from their reality. I really hope they get the help they need to love themselves.
i fell down the rcta rabbit hole a while ago. most people were mocking rcta, but i did see some people who took it seriously. i saw a girl who was from india and claimed her skin had lightened after she applied whitening creams and listened to subliminals, which just goes to show that a lot of this community is born out of insecurity with one's own features.
They've been telling Black people for Generations how awful we are as a people but then at the same time they love themselves some Black Entertainment.
I love that it’s only ‘trendy’ races that these kids will consider. It’s ignoring the struggle that some ethnicities get for just existing in a structurally prejudiced society. It’s like a very surface level understanding of a culture and an identity. We ethnic minorities and poc aren’t a monolith. I get cultural appreciation, I love learning and appreciating different cultures but I feel this is tone deaf. I’ve experienced racism my whole life and I’m white passing. I can’t imagine how other people would feel about this who have had more negative experiences around their identity. Funnily enough ‘orientalism’ was very trendy before and seems to be again.
I shouldn't need to say this but here: Gender identity is an innate part of a person's identity, if you take a cis boy and raise them as a girl, they will still identify as a boy, and vise versa. This is incredibly well known and there are cases of it like David Reimer, and tens of thousands of intersex cases. It's a part of your identity that you are born with, as much as your personality. Race is an entirely defined as being cultural and sociological, (it's made up) and saying otherwise is incredibly racist.
though race is a man-made concept, it is factored and determined by variables that are unable to be changed such as: where you were born, what race your direct family is/was, what cultures you were brought up if it was a major influence of your upbringing. these are all variables that cannot be changed because they already happened, in the past. and we all here know, but if there's some dumb f*ck out there who can read this, NO. it's not like being transgender, what tf?? and i will use kid gloves to lightly explain how this is different: transgender is knowing you are not the gender you were assigned at birth by someone else based off of gen!tals from a man-made concept of gender to predetermine who you are before you can tell someone else "hey, actually incorrect guess buddy" umm....and also a fun fact, transgenderism and nonbinary genders have been around longer than the english language has been, so....
it's honestly so weird and sad seeing people whose insecurities about their own features and appearance are so strong that they push themselves into this strange fetishization of asian features and culture (or at least, what they perceive as asian features and culture). i think it's also important to point out how only certain parts of "asian culture" (mainly east asian) are being fetishized and perceived as cool and interesting by society as a whole, while other races and ethnicities that are demonized. that's why almost all of the RCTA/ECTA people you see are claiming to be korean, japanese, etc. and not nigerian, indian, etc. it's insane that me and my sibling are sometimes afraid of being seen as these weird, RCTA/ECTA, asian-fishers when we actually are half-asian and those aspects of ourselves ARE true to us.
i honestly don't feel sorry for them, poc can't run away from our race. we shouldn't be seen as someone's safehaven to freely commodify/caricaturize our features or culture and adapt them like a costume all without the struggle of actually being poc as if we're not even real ppl. its a symptom of dehumanization and its morbid.
When I see shit like this that is so chronically online, like these people have lost any and all contact with reality, I just think like. These are real people. These are actual human beings, flesh and blood, like you or I. And also since most of these people are teenagers it’s like. These people go to school. These people grab their backpacks and head out to school and have classes and homeworks and grades
Okay, I need some help with this one: i fully support people who are transgender. People who claim to be transracial feels incorrect to me. But the arguments that people use against transracial people are similar to or the same as those used against transgender people. So what am i missing that explains why transgender feels okay and transracial doesnt?
I think cos rcta is based in fetishisation, they aren't born feeling this way they just do it cos they think the people from that race are pretty/cooler than their own without acknowledging all the racism/orientalism those people have to endure
i had to think on this for a while before too, it basically just boils down to the fact that gender is a social construct; a made up “rule” that realistically means nothing. it’s not based on anything concrete other than the idea of what it means to be any gender. rcta isn’t the same because your race and culture is something that cannot be changed, it’s based on where you come from, genetics, etc. also feel like i should include that transracial’s true meaning is someone from one race being adopted by someone of another race. might be helpful to keep that in mind as well since people unfortunately use the term to mean both and causes a lot of confusion, probably intentional honestly
Race is based off variables that you cannot innately change such as your ancestors, where you were born, your culture, your skin color and ethnic features.
I think it has to with the fact that gender isn't something you get from your parents, race is. Everyone has a little bit of the other sex in them, the same can't be said about race, we all get a 50/50 for our sex but not for race (yes I know that gender and sex are different but thus is the best explanation I could come up with) I'm brown because my parents are brown, and their parebts were too, however, I'm not afab because my ancestors were
I have seen this on my FYP for about a year now, and although it’s disgusting regardless, 95% of it IS bait. Most of these accounts and people are trolling, but still, hella weird.
To what end though? People who spend so much energy "trolling" in such ways are still clearly not in a healthy place in their life. Same as snarkers, same as folks who pull harmful/offensive 'pranks' yet insist "it's just a joke!" Ppl who devote their entire persona on something false clearly are trying to feel smth positive out of such interactions and it can quickly go off the rails
If these people want to be that race then they need to be willing to take on the oppression that comes with being anything but white. But they don’t have to because they are white. Thank you for sharing, I’m so happy I haven’t existed on these areas of the internet wow.
This was really interesting to listen to. I'd vaguely heard of this phenomenon before, but I learned a lot from this video. As an East Asian person, it's very weird to me that someone would want to "become" Asian just because it's trendy or because they want to be different. I honestly don't understand how a race can be trendy in the first place 😅
When I was a lot younger and first starting to use social media I deeply envied people who aren't white for their beauty. I fully believed it was impossible to be beautiful if you were white. Now that I've matured and grown, I can see why that was a bad thing. But even still it's hard not to compare myself to people who genetically just have different features as me even still now. Had I vocalized those feelings and received support, I might have tried something like this. But I was 13. Kids don't have developed brains and yeah they can understand basic rights from wrongs, but a lot of schools and parents don't teach that this type of stuff is wrong.
I honestly cant make fun of or hate RCTA girls because i know they're probably just very young and insecure like i was in school when i had brief weeb phase of wanting to be Japanese. Girls are exposed to unrealistic beauty standards since gaining consciousness and every single one of them is deeply insecure before even fully knowing what that means, if anything girls wanting to change their race for "more trendy one" makes me sad because i know they're very pretty but at some point of their short lives were purposely made to feel ugly. They probably got into kpop as form of escapism, to find community and have fun but instead were exposed to more beauty standards and that messes with young brain a lot. I hope the best for them, i hope they grow up into loving their bodies and all their human imperfections.
im asian and i used to cry when i was little because i thought i wouldnt be beautiful or good enough because i wasnt white, this whole thing of trying to be asian always confusing. for white people being another race is an aesthetic, its a costume to wear until they get bored or it isnt trendy anymore. they dont have to experience the generational trauma of race based war/violence and the stereotypes that is stuck onto our countries
Im sorry this is so off topic but YOUR MH DOLLS!! YESS!! I rarely find people my age who still have a love for them or even liked them as a kid. So just ahhh love to see it But on topic, another great video! People are so weird out here. Lots of delusionnn 0-0
I would die if someone said “I’m rcta American->El Salvadoran ”I can’t imagine what it is like for people who are actually Korean or Asian having people like this 😭
As a trans person the RCTA discourse makes me deeply uncomfortable, but not just for the reasons you might think. I do feel squeamish about the RCTA subculture but I also don't like that when people talk about the RCTA community, the stuff they say sounds chillingly similar to what TERFs say about people like me. They say the RCTA folks are delusional, that they're silly and entitled, that they're appropriating and fetishizing a culture they can never really understand, et al. You can basically tick every single box for what TERFs say about trans women. So, does that mean as a trans woman I'M merely delusional, that my existence is an insult to "real" women? Or does it mean that, if I want my identity to be respected, I can't just sneer at RCTA people and call them names? When you describe it as entitled white people saying "I like this, therefore I should have it," it just sounds way too similar to somebody saying that "men in dresses" think they're entitled to womanhood. I'm not saying that RCTA people should just be accepted into the LGBTQ+ community right here and now, no questions asked. I'm saying that I honestly don't know what to feel about them, but I think it's a mistake to just dismiss them or treat them with contempt.
Imo, there's a big difference there, though I do understand your feelings. Gender is something social and individual. Race is something genetic and communal. I think the rhetoric that some people are using is similar because people are (most of the time willfully) obtuse when it comes to race and gender and try to conflate the two to make a weak argument for their racist/misogynistic/queerphobic mindset. I mean, you can see it in the comments here. I'm not saying not to feel how you do because it's awful that this conversation can be triggering for you like that. What I do feel is sad because you shouldn't have to worry about the malice in the first place. All of this free information is available, yet people are still so willingly ignorant. It's sad. Disclaimer: I'm not trying to invalidate your experience, so I'm sorry in advance if I offend you. I'm not trans, but I'm under the umbrella and also queer af. All love, no hate! Hope to see a response! ✌🏾💕🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
@@MillennialHippie from what I remember, scientist and sociologist also said that race is also a social construct, right? Tbh, I haven't found the right argument on why RCTA isn't okay while being trans is okay despite both (race and gender) generally categorized under the label of "social construct". But race and racism is such an alienating and complicated concept for me despite me being a SEA person. But living in a country where racial issue isn't as complicated as how it is in america, I don't think I'm the right fit to to have an opinion on it (on top of that I'm also cis). But it's interesting to discuss I think
There's a huge difference here. There is actually research that has been done that shows that trans people's brains are wired to think like their desired gender so no you're not just delusional. The main issue with changing races is that you will never be able to understand exactly what it feels like to live with prejudice everyday. A white person could never understand how it feels to be afraid of the police bc of the color of your skin. They could also just decide it's too hard to be this race and decide to change back which people who are actually that race can't do.
@@abitsourrrrsorry4885I mean yea race is a social construct, but it makes more sense. Race is skin tone, facial features, hair textures, body types, and culture. There are vast differences amongst each racial group. Gender is totally different. Gender is telling you that due to you being born with certain genitals you have to act a certain way and commit to certain things. "Boys like blue, girls like pink." "Men must work and provide, women must tend to children." When it comes to trans people, transphobes always bring up the lack of reproductive organs, having masculine or feminine features that the other gender "isn't supposed to have", or the whole "when you die they'll see you as your biological sex". Each can be retorted easily. There are biological females and males who can't reproduce naturally, it doesn't make them less of a man or a woman. There are many biological females and males with masculine and feminine features. Many women models would be considered "masculine" due to their height, or men having long hair or a soft jawline can be considered "feminine". But it doesn't make them less than. And there has been a few times where a trans person was dug up and people thought they were cis. Also, race is inherited. You take a dna test and it'll tell you what race and ethnicity you are. Can't do the same with gender and sex.
I want to add to the conversation. I was a hardcore kpop fan for like 2/3 years. I never thought i coukd become korean lol, but I learned the language, wanted to try the dishes, was into the fashion, etc etc. that all came from a sort of alienation i felt from people in general. I thought maybe id fit in with them. Turns out i was just autistic lol. Maybe if rtca was popular back then i wouldve leaned into that too.
So I said this elsewhere but the excuse of "trolling" doesn't magically make the person's behavior less disturbing. Same as the "it was just a prank!" bros. Just bc someone declares that they're kidding after the fact doesn't erase that they did it And tbh I find it comparatively similarly strange to spend so much energy on 'pretending' to be an arse online as it is in aactually being one. At a certain point the line between reality and fiction blurs
So I said this elsewhere but the excuse of "copying a comment" doesn't magically make the person's behavior less disturbing. Same as the "it was just a bot!" bros. But- gender is a social construct, race isn't. Race is in your DNA and heritage, gender isn't, gender only exists when one starts experiencing life and being "taught" their gender by society. Or at least that's what I think, lol.
I think it's a bit different than how you're presenting it-- it's a bunch of really self-conscious children who have ended up on the wrong side of the internet and have internalized a message that their race is bad/wrong and they want to change it (especially the person who made the tumblr post). Like the person from the tumblr post is clearly a child who has ended up on the wrong side of the internet and has internalized a self-loathing message--- hearing that post made me deeply sad for that person who thinks so poorly of themself and thinks the whole word is against them, and you implying that they are in fact athe awful person that they feel like they're being accused of being just. Cmon. That's a child who needs therapy, not a closeted racist.
Those things aren't mutually exclusive. Racism is taught, and unfortunately some kids don't get more perspective and understanding until it's too late.
@MillennialHippie that's true, but a child saying "I feel like the whole world hates me because of my race" isn't racist-- it probably would be if it stemmed from nothing or if it was said by an adult/someone who's educated enough to know better. But this is a child expressing a valid emotional response to stumbling on a side of the internet that no one should be on. I have seen fan spaces online (I won't name names but there are some pretty toxic ones out there) where ppl use "you're probably white" as a "gotcha" or comeback to any disagreement. And I don't mean racial-related disagreement, I mean "hey I like this character" "shut up you're probably white". If it makes it any better, I'm not white so this isn't coming from a place of defensiveness, but a child who needs therapy is not someone who should be the prime example of a closeted or soon-to-be racist. That kid's clearly going through stuff and feels awful about themself, and there are actually real racists in the world, this self conscious child is not even remotely a problem
@@humanbeing1248 if you give context, it would make a good argument. But the whole "shut up your white" thing is probably in response to a character being a racist stereotype or something. Because I've been in fandom for a long time and 9 times out of 10, that's what happens. A lot of the time it is a gotcha because guess what, white people don't understand and choose to not understand why something is harmful to a racial minority.
@@humanbeing1248 i think its important to remember that there are other ppl on the other side of this *(ppl who are subjugated & oppressed irl on the basis of race who are now being dehumanized - aka made into costumes without their feelings or struggles being considered), white children aren't the only one's that exist and the ppl being primarily hurt by this issue are in fact east asian or other poc ppl, whether teenagers or not. regardless of the motive, appropriating and caricaturizing another race will always be racist, and while these ppl probably do need help, their actions in no way exist in a vacuum.
@boolowoertheenappydreaded5359 of course, I'm not saying the white kids are the only victim or even the bigger victim, what Asian children go through especially at school is horrible (bullying, social exclusion, etc), I'm mainly referring to the tumblr post featured in this video, not the people who are actually trying to change their race-- if I understand correctly, the person who made the tumblr post wasn't trying to change their race, but if that's not the case then I apologize and take back what I said, yes that person would be doing something harmful and potentially racist
Nah I think I’m gonna have to skip this one. As a Japanese American who is still struggling with their identity this “”trans race”” trend is essentially doom scrolling for me
I would implore you to change the title to "The Zoomers That Want To Change Race" instead of just "Zoomers Want To Change Race". Feels like the title is criticising Zoomers as a whole and that's just fueling culture war bullshit.
I personally think that everyone, regardless of race/ethnicity, is born into societies/culture that is always “othering” a different societies/cultures. People think racism is just inherently white vs black, but racism is rampant in many different cultures and is indoctrinated into children at ages that can’t tell right from wrong. Racism is systemic. So to think only white people are racist is a very western view; and disregards other racist tendencies many other races/ethnic groups carry. Ex: lighter skin tones preferable in Asian cultures, Hutus vs Tutsis, indigenous groups va colonizers, etc. This is my opinion and I’d be happy to discuss anyone’s thoughts/ideas, just please be kind :)
weird thing tho is I feel like all the argumnents againts RCTA sound a lot like peoples argument againts trans people like the "you can never change your BiOlogY, you're being delusional" and the "you're using women/races as costumes it,s disrespectful and spreads harmful stereotypes"
well one is backed by science and the other is RCTA which all of those critiques genuinely apply to, but in the context of trans people its just unfounded transphobia
@@molasorrosalom4846 nah you're just lacking braincells so let me explain it for you transgender a has records of going back centuries ago it's not a new concept in the modern day has been seen by some as a trans figure. Hijras on the Indian subcontinent and kathoeys in Thailand have formed trans-feminine third gender social and spiritual communities since ancient times, with their presence documented for thousands of years in texts which also mention trans male figures. Gender is based society and Individuality research .Race is skin colour genetic and communal if you did a DNA test it couldn't tell you if you were a male or female , it could tell if you were you are from though IT WOULDN'T K!LL YOU RIGHT WINGS SO READ A BOOK
I’m a reverse-pescatarian just cause I love sea animals so much it would make me so sad to eat and l be policing my tide pools of ppl scavenging lol but then im fine eating other meat it makes no sense I know
Can we not generalize this across the whole generation? I love your content but it's kinda annoying to constantly have generalizations drawn about a whole generation. We talked about this topic in my lifespan development class the other day and everyone agreed that you can't transition to a different race. The example we used was Rachel Dolezal who was the president of the NAACP and who is 45 years old. This isn't only Gen-Z
@@ivy7417 okay well if it's younger Gen Z then the title should say that. (Which it does now and I appreciate it) I'm just tired of people drawing conclusions about me bc of how old I am. It's the same as saying all millennial are lazy, which isn't true.
to me, saying all white people are inherently racist is an acknowledgement of the system we all grow up in. it’s impossible to NOT benefit from white privilege as a white person almost anywhere in the world. it takes serious effort to unlearn white supremacy and if we’re being honest, most of us don’t even try, and those that do will often consider themselves “not racist” after learning the tiniest bit about systemic racism (as an example). in my opinion there is no way to escape this inherent bias as a white person, hence, all white people are inherently racist edit: to clarify, i think “all white people are inherently racist” is shorthand for “as a white person, you are not in a position to declare that you are NOT racist, because you will never fully grasp the impacts of white supremacy on everything you do and believe.”
But can't we say the same thing about people whose ancestors experienced racism. Like my grandpa from what he told me he experienced wasn't horror movie levels but he has experienced things as a soilder when he would go to bars but I feel like that victim mentality people have now limits us (I'm not trying to have an argument just a genuine conversation)
@@graysonsprojects aaahh ok that's what i was afraid of!!! i wanted to comment in case you weren't aware of it but ig there's not much u can do 😭 i watched anyway :3
I might get hate for this but I feel like white ppl are more oppressed online media I can't speak for person..I have experienced some racism in my life but being in a mainly Hispanic area it's not all that much I get treated differently. If anything I always see now that white people are just the target for some things they can't control. Not to say racist white people don't exist. But idk I feel like we live in a world where we can't just love and wild ideas exist cause we can't love ourselves enough. Love to anyone who needs it ❤
