Teenage student paddled in school over a miscommunication 

I agree these students should Never accept being beaten from anyone. Very sick to offer it in the first place. Many adult staff are sick and may enjoy doing this harm to others

This is not the old days people. You all are gonna put your hands on the wrong child one day, and the wrong parent is gonna show up and actively define wrong across your behinds

I think the people who keep saying “she CHOSE it” are completely disregarding the fact that not only was she COERCED into “choosing” it, but the timing. They wait 7 days from the incident they claim warranted the abuse. & in that 7 days, they didn’t contact mom to discuss her behavior. They didn’t give Brooklynn the difficult ultimatum on any other day, but a day in which they KNEW she had other obligations. On top of that they didn’t check their own records to verify that, regardless of her age, her mother did not agree to the option. & the school has a duty to notify as those documents are a contract between the school & the parent who is entrusting them with their child. If they are trying to argue that she is an adult & therefore, all they needed was her agreement, then as soon as she turned 18, SHE should’ve been the one to fill out the corporal punishment paperwork showing that she agreed to it WITHOUT being under duress.

This type of contact violence has been no doubt been happening here for years and now someone has challenged them. Good for her. Hopefully this victim or someone else will put a stop to this.

An investigation into this school district is needed. Surrounding counties are the holdout in Florida with barbaric beatings of school students.

Thank You WMBB News 13. This issue needs attention. Most people in our state and in our nation would never believe what is still going on in some of these rural public schools, or that places like this even exist at all.

Here in California, that principal would have been fired and arrested. He would have faced charges of assault and battery, child abuse, and child endangerment. He would have been prosecuted and his teaching credential revoked and terminated. Plus he would not only be sued by her family but would have been sentenced for 12-15 years in prison.

The punishment does not fit the trivial infraction. The guy that beat this adult young woman was once a professional baseball player now he has sunk this low.

Weird many think hitting people with wood paddles is normal here.There are 67 Fl counties, only a handful allow this. Only about 15 states still permit it. Even in the states where it's still legal most of the schools stopped it. That's about ninety % of the US where this doesn't even exist. I wonder why??

What she described was not a paddling. Clearly this was a sexual assault. Not only should those male staff members be fired they should also be criminally charged.

ALWAYS have a witness present when a student is paddled. Honestly speaking I don't think she did anything wrong to warrant paddling or in school suspension.

Hey take a look at their abusive rules in their hand book. They even hit little kids THREE times with wood two by four boards for practically nothing. You would not let somebody hit your mother your father or any other adult relative with boards, and these are young people. Very sick

That is pretty old to get paddled ,I was 17 and the substitute phys ed teacher paddled me for not dressing out , she didn't have to but chose to because I honestly believe she enjoyed it . A power over a man type thing ,idk .

Poor Brooke is very brave just to be able to talk about this so straightforwardly and publicly. I can only imagine how humiliating the whole thing is for her. This story will almost certainly follow her for a while, and she'll probably have strangers asking her about the spanking even when she is in college. Even if she chose to take licks over detention, it was just a stupid mix-up anyway, and she never should have had to face this dilemma in the first place. I hope some change is made in Liberty County, Florida.

When there is intentional and deliberate violence involved the perpetrator/s are always to blame,; NEVER the victim. These aged adult principals have been threatening and committing battery upon the bodies of males and females for a long period of time without any repercussions, and they know exactly how to get the results they want to achieve. It might do well for people to educate themselves on the issue of public-school corporal punishment in its entirety. These schools and school districts that use this abuse compete quarterly and annually within the district, AND other schools within the state, for lower suspension and detention and expulsion rates. And guess what--the violence of beating people helps achieve their goals to do just that. No schools ever compete with each other regarding corporal punishment instances, and it is only through public records that reveals how these abusers are achieving their goals; through violence. These school employees are quite experienced and aware of just how to intimidate, coerce and pressure students (especially unsuspecting naive "first time" students who may rarely even know the meaning of corporal punishment or what the violence actually entails) The administrators are quite aware of how strong peer pressure is among high school students themselves, particularly in the case with males, into agreeing to "suck it up or man up" and accept the abuse. The two male Principals offered this female honors student no other options except the two. They knew the nonviolent option would be unacceptable to her because it would interfere with her studies and her job, and thus cleverly making CP attractive so that would be the only other alternative that she could accept. By doing this they try, but failed, to take the blame off of themselves. It is the two school employees who do the bidding of the school board that are GUILTY of this violence. Walking away may indeed be" ego driven" which matters not, because it is still a COWARDLY act. Thank God for victims of violence like this young woman who will fight their perpetrators to try to end this cruelty in our public schools.

These Principals know how to intimidate and coerce students AND parents into agreeing to this type of violence. School statistics prove this and they have been at it a very long time and nobody has challenged their game, until now.

Back when i was in school some kid was being paddled this was in the 8th grade the teacher spanked him once then the kid was able to grab the paddle from the teacher and the kid paddled the teacher then it turned into a fist fight

Where is the doctor papers that support the students claim. I can support that the punishment. We could approve by having parents sign approval to the punishments. Teachers are leaving because parents don't want their children to deal with the consequences. I also approve having cameras in the classroom because staff and students lie all the time. The will illuminate the he said, she said situations.

Yes if the student is attractive, corporal punishment should then obviously not be allowed in those cases, just like they say. It's still OK for plain or unpopular students though.

Oh come on. It's Christmastime for Pete's sake. The only people on earth we're allow to beat at all anymore are kids. And you want to take that away from us? You can't even do it to animals now. And not wives or employees or sailors or criminals or criminal 'suspects' resisting arrest, even. Though I did see a body cam video where a cop made a point of reminding a mom that beating teenagers is perfectly legal in Florida. But even then he wasn't about to try it himself. Actually I'm pretty sure you can legally beat your own kid no matter what state you're in, maybe handy to remember when on cross-country trips with the family. There are Walmarts and places like that pretty much along every major highway. But last I checked, the only state where a majority of parents thought it was okay for schools to paddle kids was Arkansas. Even there it was by only by a slim majority, 51% in favor. Everywhere else including Florida it was a landslide the other way. But still, the bottom line is that us adults got it a LOT when we were kids. And a lot of us got a lot of it in school, too. And now it's *our* turn, is the thing. We're proud of our cultural heritage. Anyhow, it wouldn't be fair for the buck to stop with us. We came out perfectly fine, obviously, and not just our own children but our friends' and neighbors' kids, plus everybody else's kids too, also deserve to end up coming out just as fine as us.
