From our archive: In this full documentary film, our cameras captured stories of teens serving time in one of America's largest juvenile prisons. Viewers on our channel have previously watched some of the abbreviated stories of teens featured in this film, but this narrated documentary illuminates their stories from start to finish. From the military unit to time in segregation, from the high and lows of each step of the process to gain their freedom, our documentaries reveal what it's really like for teenagers serving time in a maximum-security juvenile prison.
Update: John Madden graduated from boot camp. Officer Rick Johnson attended his graduation. He was eventually discharged for medical reasons. John died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2020 at the age of 30. He was taking college classes at the time of his death.

Reading that John took his own life broke my heart. The young man in this documentary was so full of hope and promise. The grip that trauma and mental health issues can have on a person unfortunately prevents them from seeing the good in themselves. I hope that John is at peace, and that he now knows the positive impact he's had on others throughout his life.

I now have the deepest respect for all the staff who show up to work every day and help rehabilitate these kids to become men and provide the opportunity for a successful future, despite the stress and/or injuries they sustain from them.

It is so strange to watch this as a white 47 year old male. I had a normal childhood. Stayed out of trouble, graduated top half of class, got married and was living a productive life. Had an injury and got hooked on pain killers. Lost basically everything and only by shear luck never ended up in prison. I am sober now but still struggle daily. I really feel for these kids that grow up harsh and loveless homes. I still take it one day at a time. So sorry to hear about John Madden. By the Grace of God I didn't pull the trigger but definitely had those aspirations at times. Moved in with my dad before Covid hit and have been helping take care of him. Got out of the city and now live in a tiny town in south Texas area.

God bless you! I’m happy for you that you weee able or over come but like you said it’s one day at a time..unfortunately some of these kids come from “normal” living homes but are born with issues that are over looked with some parents in denial and some just don’t know…I have a 30 year old that i love and support til this day I try to tell her she needs counseling and so forth but what can I do now that she’s an adult I had her in counseling when she was a minor but unfortunately all I can do now is talk and support her..she hasn’t seen a Councelor since she was a minor and she really needs it as an adult…Now she has boys and I pray that they don’t end up like some of these boys ..

IMO, this should be shown in schools! Even if they hear about it, they need to see it for what it truly is. Drugs and alcohol are a huge problem, it gives them courage to do crimes. As teenagers their going through so much naturally, hormones, peer pressure, fighting with parents, siblings. It's so sad, I wish if kids are struggling they would ask for help, until someone does something, before it's too late! I get it starts at home, schools also could help with counseling. These children are our future!!

I was very proud of John for all he did while in the facility, as well as his time in the military. I was very sad when I read at the end that he had take his life. May he rest in peace. He did what he felt he had to and it is not for others to second quess why he did it. Very good video and does teach much about the juvenile prison system. He had been an inspiration to so many in his life even though he may not have known it.

John did look deeply sad. I wondered why his face was so solemn. I only saw him smile one time in this whole documentary and that was when he was hugging his friends goodbye. So sad he took his life.

the problem with these young men are the lack of discipline in home. When I was a child I would get my ass whooped if I misbehaved. Now parents will face criminal charges for disciplining there kids.

I was in the detention center for about a year. After my commitment I lived in placement for a few years. It’s sad to think most the kids I was locked up with are doing years on years in prison, strung out on hard drugs or dead. A few of us are doing good but we’re all about a decade behind, statistics show kids like us will be that far behind at least. And that’s ok, we’re doing it now and that’s what matters.

That’s real heartbreaking to hear about what happened to John, scoring that well on the asvab was great it meant he really wanted to change things but it’s sad to see he ended up taking his own life. @@CalamariProductions I just recently found your channel and I am very impressed with it. I have to say my heart sank when I saw where Mr. Madden had taken his own life and hes gone way too soon. You stated he had a lot of demons from his traumatic childhood that was a contributing factor to his suicide and I am pretty sure I can relate to what your saying. I'm asking, did the program he was in learn from this terrible tragedy and implement a more intense therapy program to help these young men to deal with their demons from their childhood? I hope they did and I hope they give recognition to Mr. Madden for opening their eyes and minds even more. I know I've had my career detailed due to ill health and its been very difficult to deal with when you've spent so much time training and focusing on becoming this one thing as your identity for a career. My story is not the same ...Although my life changed forever after a spinal cord injury....I lost my job as teacher my self respect as I lived with chronic pain and disability..15 years on I live day by day now...Learning to live with and accept physical limitations and peoples reactions to them is hard and often very humbling... its been a real journey Yet through it all I ve come to understand that many suffer in so many ways and judging others is distructive. With compassion we can begin to heal person by person....It takes courage, compassion and grit....and people like you....

I’ve been in and out of mental hospitals and residential facilities and even got kicked out of one of them- they won’t take me as a patient anymore because I’ve been there 18 times and my behavior was awful (it’s called failure to treat I believe) and it truly is hard to find the motivation and keep the motivation to stay out of places like that and succeed in the real world… I’ve been home for about 5 months now which is the longest in the past 4 years I’ve been out so it’s awesome to see these guys find hope to be in the military! I hope these boys (and girls but we only really see the boys) do well and stay out.

People fail to realize for some of these kids it’s not just “lack of discipline” or them needing to “grow up” - for some, it’s their environment like growing up with absent parents/addicted parents/abusive or neglectful parents or parents who constantly go in/out of jail themselves with no family members or village to relate to, or help guide them in the right direction a crucial times in their lives. Their minds are still developing at these ages, along with the hormonal changes, & they’ve gone without learning how to properly process their emotions (impulse control, anger, etc), which is what the counselors are there trying to help them accomplish. A lot of these boys are really just seeking acceptance & trying to fit in anywhere they can, even if it’s with the criminal, gang, or prison crowd.

I think the Boot Camp to Military Scheme is great. When I was a juvenile I was a rouge and ended up in Court (In the UK), I was given a chance, screwed the nut for a year and a half, then at 17 joined the Military leaving after two decades, five operational Tours under my belt and exemplary conduct report on discharge.

As a mother of 4 boys, I am concerned not seeing any activities for them to blow off steam. Jogging, boxing, etc. They have to work of their steam so that they don't cause all of the trouble they cause.

Not to mention they're full of growing testrone. I'm pretty sure they do go to classes and have activities. Thing is like she said, they're taught the skills and tools but they need to learn how to properly use them. Poor kids can't communicate how they feel, how to display proper anger towards a situation. You know they need to learn to back away from something and contiplate how they will respond. These skills should be taught and are shown to children even in the beginning of life. It's a sad cycle BUT IT CAN BE CHANGED. my heart and prayers have always been for the children of this world.

See they see they're counselors maybe for an hour a week. Then classes and communication therapy but then throw in fear, peer pressure, wanting to look like a bad ass. Then everything they're taught goes out the window. These children need good , constant support and LOVE. DEAR GOD HELP THEM WITH THE COURAGE TO CHANGE. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

@@datboylorenzo you are correct. Jails and prisons have to abide by rules and regulations. One of which is that each individual gets their basic needs met. Locking humans in a cell with no exercise is asking for trouble. Other countries do many things with the inmates. Men exercise, proven to reduce fighting, education and job skills. Countries other than the United States have a very low return rate. Teen boys just starting puberty have hormones going all out of control. Exercise is proven to mellow them out. Of course they are being punished, if they aren't taught anything, including how to handle their emotions, they will just return...also proven.

When I was stationed at Fort Stewart Georgia in the mid-90s they used to bring the boot camp kids on to the post to run the obstacle course. One day I went up to the shoppette and all the bootcamp kids were lined up outside. They were being allowed into the store in small groups to buy personal hygiene items and things like that. I went inside and made my purchase. I walked outside with a case of beer on each shoulder and walked over to my brand new car, that I had just bought the week prior, it still had the paper dealers plate on it, and put the beer in my car. I turned around and all the kids that were still sitting outside were watching me. I'm sure some of them like to do some underage drinking before they got sentenced to the program. And their drill instructor said "Take a good look gentleman you see that nice ride and that cold beer? That's what doing the right thing and staying out of trouble gets you."

I served with guys in the Army who were in one of the other branches before going into the Army. Do you know what his medical issues were?

Back in the 70s I was on the streets at 14 and never had a good mom or dad. 5 step dads beat and molested me. Mom a crackhead stripper. In our younger years we could rally get away with all kids of trouble. At 18 we get a clean slate. I still had plenty of jail time but now a days kids don’t really have a chance to redeem themselves. Nice to see a program they can succeed and make a better life. Lucky for me I met my wife at 18 and she had twins boys. We got married and now 35 years later we have a great life with our kids and grandkids. Sadly today kids are behind the 8 ball.

I was actually locked up with John Madden for a few months like 20 years ago when we were kids… that’s super sad to see that he had so much potential and then killed himself… I’ll never forget him! RIP John Madden

I cried for John. Taking your own life is not an easy decision, and sometimes life weighs heavily enough that it breaks the toughest of people. He did exactly what he said he would do, he changed, he changed his life, his situation and his attitude.

I really wish every juvenile prison had this program...kids need structure...positive structure...and these kids need family...families that will give unconditional support...I truly believe these programs make these kids better and even the kids that want to get in to the program makes them reach for higher standards...and these programs make them give back to their country and community

This military program is wonderful and need more Maybe something will change of sending these young men back into bad neighborhoods for a month before going to boot camp. A halfway house or something. My condolences to John's family and friends . RIP John.

I think getting to the military life was all John knew. The structure, the discipline. When it was taken out of his hands for medical reasons. It broke him of all he believed he was worth. John you are an inspiration to many and always will be. Thank you

@aprilcook919 - Appreciate you watching John's story. Sadly, his mental health issues from an early age were never properly addressed, and those issues followed him throughout his life. He had seemingly been doing well prior to taking his own life. It just proves we never really know the internal struggles that so many people deal with. Sad.

The life ring that John so valiantly embraced dissolved before his eyes. The military gave him a reason to change and grow. Being medically discharged casts a broad net. He may have sustained an injury, encountered a genetic deficiency, or mental illness that was undiagnosed or under treated. With the driving force behind his desire to change gone, he probably perceived that the only way to survive was through the old ways that landed him in corrections in the first place. Rising above that, yet seeing it as the only option, had to be disheartening. I understand his suicide. What he needed, and perhaps had, was a case worker that was able to make weekly contact. Note: Not an officer of the court, or anyone that can hold jail time over his head. If I was John’s case manager, I would guide him towards an physical and organized career. Off the top of my head, a position within the Forest Service. I taught rock climbing, kayaking, rafting.

Please don't say suicide is giving up on yourself. It doesn't nearly describe the utter hopelessness and isolation the person feels at the time where it is their only option. Of course I do not advocate it, but your sentence here sounds like blame and it is a tragic thing all around he felt this was his only option. Many people after not being able to do the career they've trained for many years or perfected get discharged/fired for medical reasons find it very difficult to find meaning in life when work is what gave them meaning and purpose. Especially very driven and goal oriented people.

I think this Future Soldiers Programme is an excellent opportunity for these boys. It gives them what their parents should have given them. It gives them focus but most of all a sense of belonging and hope. Just a shame there's only a few places

@janemorgan5584 - appreciate your comments. So many of the kids told us the Future Soldiers program gave them the structure they needed. It was often the structure they missed on the outside. The key is trying to find ways to implement some sort of structure once they're released. It's always a massive challenge, especially if kids have no support system once they're out. When y'all say military exam, do you mean the ASVAB? I took it my sophomore year in high school and was thrilled with my results. In my opinion, it's a great exam that is more indicative of one's aptitudes and weaknesses than other exams.

I'd would disagree with that being I took that test twice in the 1980s and came up with different results each time. It doesn't show someone aptitudes. Tests rarely show that to be honest.

Its so sad the key is rehabilitation and alot of these kids either are able to get out and go the right path or back into the old ways and continue their old ways into the adult prison and the the word rehabilation is out the window the parole boards should be abolished all together its a big joke

I was in that prison and also in the military program like 15 years ago😅 once you turn 21 they just walk you across the street to the adult prison theirs like 3 prison in that area
