Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today, Ethan and I are returning from a "Touch a Truck" Event with our Peterbilt 389X Miller Industries Century 1150R rotator and our new Western Star 49X with a 9055XL heavy towing and recovery unit when we receive a call from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The MSHP state that there is an oversized load that went off the edge of the interstate and is in danger of losing its load....a very expensive load, as we come to find out. So rather than heading to my granddaughter's 1st birthday party, we take a slight detour to help out this driver who is in some real trouble. When we first arrive, I can tell this isn't going to be an easy job. Ethan calls in Shelby and Jacob for Traffic Control and additions eyes and hands, while we set to developing a recovery plan. Ethan and I come up with a plan than we know will work. The driver, being a former tow operator, doesn't like our plan, and wants us to try a different method. We try his way first and find out VERY quickly that wasn't going to work. Once the reinforcements arrive we set up for our original plan. I didn't have my helmet cam, so this is a bit different format. Hope you still enjoy it!!! Thank you, God, for blessing our family and our business. Watch as we continue to receive God's blessings. Shoutout to the camera person who was videoing this event with a very steady hand and providing commentary! Ron, I don't know who they are, but they are an integral part of getting events like this on video, and provided a very helpful narrative! They also put themselves at a slight risk of getting injured, the kind of risk that always comes with this kind of job. They deserve respect and thanks for doing a job few people would want to willingly do.

Okay, a bit different video this morning: different perspective, different video start. And a very critical situation! I learned years ago to always listen to the experienced professionals. After a while, I became an experienced professional and people listened to me. But I still listened to the other professionals.

The customer is always right, except when it coems to towing and recovery. It is best to let us do our job to the end, safely, instead of mid way, deciding to try to get it out yourself. Especially if it's close to a roll over. Better to spend 2 hours and get moved safely, than to take 10 minutes and roll yourself over. Then we have to spend another 2 hours, rolling you back over, and you're no better off. Great works guys and as always, stay safe out there.

That sounds like it was Shelby. She’s been working with Ron in the Rotator, and according to the description Ethan called her and Jacob out for additional eyes and hands to help out. Also appears she has a headset on to communicate with Ron and Ethan.

Very lucky that it didnt roll further, fellas listen to your tow truck operators if your vehicle is clearly in need of recovery/assistance! That person should have listened to you first and foremost to avoid the extra delays and dangers. Great work!

Driving a big DOT snowplow in the wee hours of a raging snowstorm, back right wheels dropped off edge of pavement and slid into a shallow ditch. IDK why it didn't go wheels up. Called for help. Crew showed up, pondered situation and said "if we pull 'er out from the front, she'll go over fer sure". I jumped out of the cab said it "she's all yours". They got her out with a rear pull. Nothing like sitting in the cab waiting for help, and listening to that salt and sand shifting in the dump bed. Good times. Nice work there, Ron and team!

I do not know. I miss seeing the call out and coming to the call... I do like the view of the trailer being lifted, but think having a first person POV from Ron/Ethan is better.... Tho I will be happy with any thing they can share with us...

Great job Ron. That looked to me like a low pressure Turbine Rotor,, as a turbine engineer I used to blade these huge machines and install them in power stations.

The driver said it was some kind of Turbine and VERY EXPENSIVE, again, according to the driver. He was more concerned about not damaging the load. We never got to see under the tarp, though. Thanks for watching and God bless.

That is the first thing I thought when I saw the end coupling. I worked at a nuclear power plant in Colorado for 23 years. Looks like a low or intermediate stage rotor, which normally weigh about 50 tons. They are so heavy that when indide a turbine, when shut down, they are kept on a turning gear that slowly rotates them. Otherwise, they would sag and destroy themselves upon startup.

​@philipbearly6620 My bio grandfather was a nuclear turbine engineer for GE and had his hands on designing the generators for nuclear power generation. He built a model of one that I used in the classroom to show kids how electricity was generated at Hanford Washington. It was somewhat interesting because the model used steam to turn the generator, where full size, a similar principle is used.

I agree Ron I worked 20 years in a scrap metal processing center with a automobile shredder and a shear that puts up too one thousand and twenty five ton of downforce on the shear head and when you are working with that kind of weight and pressure a hard hat is pretty much just like a helmet on a motorcycle rider all they are going too do is make a good container for them too carry your head away from the accident scene and keep from messing up your hair so you look better in the casket that will have to be closed anyway

Rick, please give us ballpark costs for these tows, not specifically, a two truck tow, plus transport is around this . Or maybe a show on costing on industry averages , but special cases and such as well . It would be interesting and appreciated.

I worked for a local tow company for years here in NC mountains a 50 ton rotator is 750.00 per HR minimum of 4 yrs and a conventional 50 ton wrecker is 450.00 per hour per NC State highway patrol as of 2022

😂🤣 I'd say someone owes Ethan a couple six packs of soda... Walking under a loaded boom, between the load and rotator causes Ethan to get fussed at! BELIEVE me, I understand! It's certainly safer to walk between the load and the rotator than walking between the rotator and live traffic!!! But as much as we all heard you fuss about where Ethan walked, I couldn't pass the opportunity 😁 And trust me, I truly believe you ALL try to be as safe as possible while doing a dangerous job! I'm happy to know that people like you exist to provide services for those in need! Bill

Yeah, I noticed him go between the load and rotator as well, and started to fuss, then realized it was the least problematic of several bad ideas. Below the load where it would roll if things came loose? Into traffic? Or between the load and rotator?

@@spudgamer6049Sometimes you don’t have a best option and have to go with the least bad one. Towing and recovery is risky at best. Notice the text mentioning there was no point in wearing a hard hat in the face of that amount of cable tension.

I am pretty sure the Driver is going to get chewed out by his bosses over this especially when there is video over it. When Ron is telling the driver, 'Don't do it', Ron is a 100 % professional in these situations. Another awesome job by Ron and the crew of Midway Truck!!

That’s easy… there was a loose nut behind the steering wheel. I’ve dealt with oversized/overweight loads in my career… the only rule that you never violate… you never leave pavement… concrete, asphalt or engineered/improved aggregate. Hit grass with your trailer wheels you are asking for significant issues. You also never trust the person who put you in a predicament to get you out.

Just looking at the ruts created and later the tires creating a gap away from the road shows what would have happened if it rocked toward the berm. Any speed more than a crawl would have caused the tires to flex and let it roll. I would have asked what the load was but having the caption at the beginning making me think I’d fast forwarded the video and hearing a woman’s voice got me all out of sync.😂🙃 After realizing it was your assistant explaining what was happening I finally remembered the one that was thinking ahead of the situation in an earlier video. Triple role capability still having her head on a swivel. God continues to bless you with talented individuals.🙏 Think I’ll go back and watch what I missed at the first. Good job all!

Tricky situation. Good save Ron. I like the overall view a separate camera person gives. I miss the coms. The way you make decisions is interesting to me. There may be legal or technical issues that I don't know about here. Just my 2 cents worth.

If you read the description, you would see that they were returning from a “Touch A Truck” event and he didn’t have his helmet cam, so this was the best they could do under those circumstances. It was possibly Mrs Pratt who took the video.

@@thryduulf but based on description, of where they were and going, and the voice, which sounded like Ron’s wife (from prior livestreams), that’s my conclusion. I believe Shelby was there assisting with the actual job.

Incredible work as always, Ron! I want to share a story and help spread the message that "It costs nothing to be kind": On my way home today, I noticed a car broken down on the side of the road. I didn't see a driver in it. I dropped off my sister, turned around, and went back, intending to drop a couple of emergency road flares, sit with the vehicle, and call law enforcement on the non-emergency line if no one was around to notify them of the road hazard. When I got back up the road to the car, I noticed a woman and her teen daughter standing on the roadside opposite the car. I pulled over and asked if they were alright and if they had a tow coming. She said the person whose home she broke down in front of let her use the phone to call someone to come get them. So they had someone coming to get them but not the car. The car was effectively dead. It would not shift to neutral to move it, it would not start, it was stuck where it was. So I offered to call a tow for them since they had poor cell reception. The mother then noticed my fire department shirt (I volunteer at my local department here in central NYS) and asked if knew X (in place of the individual's name). I asked, "Of X's towing?" She said yes. I said, "Yeah, he's my fire chief." Turns out she's a good friend of his. So I called him for her and he sent out a tow truck. I waited with her while she waited for her son to show up to take her daughter home and for her husband to later show up for her. And I continued to stand by with them until the tow got her car cleared and they were safely on their way home. She was scared out of her mind because she had her young daughter with her, her car had broken down in one of the worst possible spots on the state route here (very little shoulder on this section of the route, blind hills on either side, with traffic that ignores the posted 45 MPH limit), and she had little to no cell reception. Me turning around to check on the car and offering to help them took a lot of that fear off of her mind. She and her daughter are home safe and sound and nobody got hurt. For my kindness, they offered me $20. I adamantly refused it but they left it on the ground, walked to her husband's car, and drove off. I couldn't leave the money there so I picked it up, and I will pay it forward the next chance I get to. Remember folks, **It costs nothing to be kind.** God bless.

That is a safe and well done job you and Ethan has done there Ron. Great way to recover the load without the load being lost. I wished there was a helmet cam from it, but it is what is it. Sometimes you don't get to have the chance to record it at times.

Ron I totally agree with you about the hard hats, you & Ethan did a great job on this recovery. You remind me a lot of my dad &I on some of the Towing and Recovery jobs that we did in the mid to late 70’s . Your Crew is Awesome everyone has their job to do and it is like a well oiled machine, everyone not only learns from you but gets the job done efficiently. 😊

Certainly sounded like it was her, based upon the live streams. And they were coming back from a touch a truck event so likely she would’ve been with them.

It was actually me! I helped them chain everything up on the back of the trailer and we realized we didn’t have any footage of it. So I started recording since the rest was up to the rotator and new star

I see & hear many new faces/ voices that we haven't been introduced to. It's almost time to make a short video introducing us to the current Midwest crew. An introduction to the behind the scenes staff would also be nice for without the office staff, most businesses would be in deep trouble. Another video showing the Midwest crew being as safe as possible while helping our truckers get back on the road.

@@JohnHallgren It didn't sound like her on my end. It could have been her, or Shelby. Alex really can't tell from the voice alone who it is. He needs the face to recognize the voice of the person. If I were to talk to him by voice only, he would not even recognize my voice to me. When Ethan does the video intro, I usually have to tell him it is Ethan doing the talking.

Mr. Pratt I know it’s not in your heart to do this but that is the difference between you and I. If I would have been in that position where the driver would not have allowed me to do my job the safest way possible. I would have packed up my equipment and I would have went back to my shop and waited for the next call to come in. That driver has probably never seen the inside of a tow truck let alone operated one and know all of the safest way to take care of the situation. God Bless Mr. Pratt.

I'm glad the headstrong know it all driver eventually saw sense and agrees to let you get on with your job. If he had continued to insist on refusing your services, you could get him to sign a disclaimer, charge his employer anyway and then refuse him any further help when he rolled it over! That's what I would've done!

Might want to look at something along the lines of the Petzl Vertex Vent Hi-Viz helmet. It's a climbing/rope access hard hat, so it's lightweight, made for looking up and down with as little hassle or shake as possible once you adjust the suspension and chin strap, and vented to get a bit of airflow on a muggy day. The Hi-Viz ones in orange or yellow have reflective trim already, and you can add either an eyeshield or a full face visor for those times when you need to run a grinder on the roadside. They're not cheap, but one relatively minor hospital bill is almost guaranteed to cost more than a whole pallet of them.

Sounds very similar to this: pmirope.com/product/pmi-advantage-helmet/ which is what we use in our HazMat Response trailer. I've looked into changing all our helmets over to this style, but I haven't decided yet. Thanks and God bless.

Thanks for another great video Ron and Ethan and Shelby and crew. It was an interesting and informative and enjoyable video. Shelby did a great job with the video but missed Ron’s voice over. Shelby did just fine. Sorry you missed your granddaughter’s birthday party but hopefully you can catch part of it. Wow and wow. Really hard job here with all that weight. Heavy haul is all about size and weight and expensive loads. You gave the driver every courtesy you could. Glad he finally let you take the lead. There was SO MUCH WEIGHT on that trailer, he would of definitely rolled it over if you hadn't convinced him to rescue him from that deceptive situation...! "YOU ARE THE MAN" imo...!!! Just watch 4:29 at 1/4 speed, the whole rotator twists when the load is suddenly lost and regained after the chain re-grabbed. Awesome bit of video Ron.

We were out eating at a restaurant one night. It's on a secondary highway just before you enter the village. When we walked out there was a flatbed on its side on the side of the road. The blacktop was a few inches higher than the shoulder. He must have pulled off to go into one of the businesses. He was fully loaded with pressure tested lumber. It doesn't take much to flip one

It doesn’t matter what the wrecker operator suggests customers never listen until it’s too late I know I’d been driving and operating wreckers since November 2001 upto 2016 when I got hurt on the side of interstate and I had customers not listen to me and tell me they will get the cars n trucks out without my help and then turn around and say I need your help. I agree if they would listen to us and not think they know our job better than we do they would be better off. It’s a shame we can’t charge them for stupidity or we would all be rich but it’s not part of the job. We just do what we can for customers. If he had tried to move after you told him not to and rolled it, this would have became an episode of Bonehead Truckers 😂 Glad he listened and let you work your plan. It’s easier to keep the load rubber side down instead of having to roll it back over.
