Yes this happened to me when I had a women gyno. I have the same problem and fainted multiple times from blood loss and when we wanted to go on the pill she didn’t want me too because I was a teenager and didn’t “want to give me any ideas” and when I needed her to sign a paper for my breast reduction since I was dealing with chronic neck pain from the weight she still turned me down because she said “you’re still so young and you might want to breastfeed some day and sometimes there can be complications that could stop that” I was like lady I just told you I can’t get out of bed, I’m much more focused on having a normal life that being able to breastfeed. Besides how am I supposed to meet someone and take care of a child if I’m stuck in my bed because it hurts too much to move. My mom switched me to her gynecologist who was a man and he signed of right away because he could see my pain and helped me get on a good birth control that made it so I hardly got my period or the terrible cramps and migraines that came along with it. So yes while some might feel more comfortable with a women I find that my male gynecologist didn’t judge you at all and was much more understanding of my pain and always was like “look you know your body and symptoms better than me, if the pain is unbearable it’s my job as a doctor to help you, not push my own opinions onto you.”

My high school luckily covered both reproductive systems equally, but since I live in an abstinence-only sex ed state, they didn't teach us anything about consent or sexuality or even forms of protection. The teacher's way around his legal inability to teach about that was to bring in a guest speaker from an STD clinic to talk about STDs and segue from there into talking about birth control and the fact that yes, you can get pregnant in a hot tub.

Most schools don't have an excuse to not talk about female and male reproductive systems equally, and I dare someone to tell me it's because of religious reasons or that bullshit. I go to a Catholic all-girls school and I was still taught everything about genitals, STDs and contraceptive methods (even if we are told to wait until marriage). Kids need to learn about their bodies so they know if there's something wrong with them that can be fixed.

Dawn, like a lot of people, clearly had very limited knowledge about stuff like this. a lot of parents don't talk to their kids about sex-related things despite the importance. sex ed varies in quality/execution but she was in public school where it can be less than helpful, as shown by the male teacher not even being able to say the word "vagina" in class. unless her parents were looking down and in there, which I'd hope they weren't, there's no reason they'd know. and a regular doctor's checkup does not include a full downstairs exam. in the beginning flashback, she bites her brother's finger so yes she had them since very young. with everything else in the movie, we can assume they're only visible and.. out when she's being violated and it's nonconsensual. plenty of teens do not visit gynaecologists; she does eventually do that because of her predicament but it's not unusual for a girl her age to not have been to one if they've had no issues down there. she'd never had that type of exam before which the predatory doctor used to take advantage of her after he asks her if it's her first time (checking to see if she knew what to expect, and since she didn't, he was gross and got his fingers bitten off).

I've watched this movie with my two best friends (both are males) when we were around 15 or something, and I had a very similar experiance. They were completely horrified.
