Ethiopia/ Eritrea = Teff. Teff= Ethiopia/Eritrea as simple as that. No other African countries know or eat teff. Except these two countries.

Teff is becoming very popular in southwest Missouri here are a hay crop to follow wheat hay .. $3.10 a pound for uncoated seeds and an application of 8 to 10 lbs per acre it's pretty cheap compared to say Sudan which runs 25% and up more per acre and sudan is really hard on the ground so cost more to maintain soil long term as well .. very interesting stuff

Teff was one of the earliest plants domesticated. Teff is believed to have originated in Ethiopia between 4000 BC and 1000 BC. Genetic evidence points to E. pilosa as the most likely wild ancestor. A 19th-century identification of teff seeds from an ancient Egyptian site is now considered doubtful; the seeds in question (no longer available for study) are more likely of E. aegyptiaca, a common wild grass in Egypt.

If teff is grown in Oklahoma, will the price go down? I remember my aunt's farm in Oklahoma growing wheat. It would be cool to be able to use more teff. I like it, but it sure isn't cheap.

@5tonyvvvv Good luck with it. The enjera I made wasn't bad, then again it wasn't that good. But I lack experience. I haven't had any luck adding it to bread recipes, but I probably just need to add gluten, or some substitute for gluten, like xanthum or guar gums.

You can make a good injera with nothing else. Follow this recipe. Mix some teff flour with some water and leave it on the counter for a couple of days. It will be a good starter (or you can use an active dry yeast). Then, add more teff flour and make the batter. If it is thick, it will ferment quicker but if you add more water, it takes a bit longer. Leave the batter for additional 3-5 days (depending on the weather. In summer, 3 days are good in winter 4-5 days) to ferment. Once the water separates from the dough in about a couple of days, change the water (this step is optional). Then make absit (boil a small amount of water and put some of the batter in the boiling water. It doesn’t need a lot. Just a little). Stir and cook for about 5 minutes. Wait until it cools down. Once it cools down mix it to the main batter. Also mix a cup of teff flour with cold water and add to the batter. Mix well. Leave it until it starts to bubble up (usually 6 -12 hours). If you use baking powder, you don't need to wait this long but we traditionally do not use it. Again, if the weather is cold, it takes longer (upto 24 hours). (It doesn’t always bubble up. But you can still go ahead and bake it at this point). Here is a video of it but it's in Amharic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RcZcs8Qf5hs.html (The English Version) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cbmQAKdjb9I.html Or a quicker one in 24 hours ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OCbLPEXL1_g.html Or with barley flour ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y_BjExuprfw.html

You didn’t produce good because of the climate. The conditions of Ethiopia has been designing by God in such a way that teff grows perfectly there; elsewhere: not so much.....Despite that, I highly recommend that you visit Ethiopia and try natural, unaltered teff. If you can’t, just go to a local Ethiopian restaurant. It may not be as good as natural teff in Ethiopia, but it is still good indeed!

@@zemichaelatnafu1121 Ethiopian food in Dallas, TX is not exactly cheap (it's almost as expensive as Japanese food), so I don't eat it often. When I do, I enjoy it. I have this wonderful memory of going to the Lalibela restaurant with my friend Tracy, and when the meal was over she announced that it was her treat, because of my birthday. That was very sweet of her.

You are right. I’m Ethiopian myself, and I can certainly tell you that teff is endemic only to Ethiopia and Eritrea (Eritrea actually belonged to Ethiopia until the 1990s).
@HelloWorld1947
@HelloWorld1947 8 лет назад
Teff, is indigenous to Ethiopia. It's found in Egypt because Ethiopia once had an empire called, Axum, that ruled Egypt, Yemen, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia. So, our crop was used as trade. The countries that eat it outside of Ethiopia do so because of the Ethiopians who live there make it or they buy it from Ethiopia. Egyptians have no clue what Teff is. Even the word Teff itself is an Ethiopian/Amharic word. Teff doesn't even grow in a desert land called Egypt! The crop will never be successful outside of Ethiopia unless they genetically modify it. The weather in Ethiopia is perfect for Teff to grow wild! The crop has already failed both in Oklahoma, Texas and Idaho. But, if they genetically modify it, it can never compete with the organic seed. I'm very glad the Ethiopian government has put a ban on the crop from being exported. As it will only increase the price for the locals. Until it can grow successfully outside of Ethiopia, Teff will be indigenous to Ethiopia!

It was never found in Egypt. The company who is saying that has reason. They do not want to pay for Ethiopia Patent right they promised. Plus Eritreans also eat Teff. I know most people forget to mention that since we all think we are one people. But we have to mention that too.
@HelloWorld1947
@HelloWorld1947 7 лет назад
Yes, Eritreans eat Teff but it doesn't grow in Eritrea! It grows ONLY in Ethiopia! Just like people outside Ethiopia also eat Teff, but it's exported from Ethiopia. Eritrea gets it from Ethiopia. We're talking about where the crop grows not who eats it.

@@HelloWorld1947 Let me correct you. Teff grows in Eritrea too but the Ethiopian produce Teff in mass now days due to artificial fertiliser. The Eritrean still use the natural process to grow Teff. That's the difference. Hope you understand my point

This article is misleading. I wander if it is about legitimizing patent right that was stolen from Ethiopia. Teff is known as food only in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is the food of Abesha people. Netherlands failing Initial Obligations over Ethiopia's Teff Grain. They came to Ethiopia as aid and found out about our Teff potential. They didn't take a time to patent the seed and claim that every farmer has to pay them patent right over our own seed. So the story found on Pyramid made up story and full of crap. I am happy that is being grown in America. But I am anti monsanto style patent laws. I wish any American bring seed from Ethiopia, and do not have to pay for those looters.

You misunderstood the report. He did not say there are pyramids in Ethiopia. It is a fact, however, that teff was found in Egyptian pyramids, suggesting that the crop was known at least as far back as the pyramid days. Why did it trouble you that teff could have been used by the ancient Egyptians? This is how scientific dating works. Mummies stuffed with tobacco leaves were also found, refuting the conventional belief that tobacco was introduced to the old world after Columbus' voyage.
@zemichaelatnafu1121
@zemichaelatnafu1121 4 года назад
Sorry, but that is a fallacy. Ethiopia has been secluded from the outside world due to the Semien Mountains that encompass the Northern side of the nation. As a result, there is almost no correlation between Ethiopia and Ancient Egypt. If you were to go to Ethiopia, the commoners in the rural communities will have no idea what you talking about when you ask them about mummies and pyramids. In addition, there HAS never been any Ancient Egyptians pyramids in Ethiopia. If you mean the ancient calligraphies depicting dark-skinned people, they are Nubians, not Cushites (ancient Ethiopians).
