If you plan on grinding a mirror on the moon the one thing you're not short of is grit :)

Last time I was this early, Lithium was still the heaviest element in the universe.

Another good reason to put infrastructure on the moon: long baseline interferometry. The Event Horizon Telescope should achieve resolutions of a few tens of micro arc seconds at millimeter wavelengths using baselines that are a few thousand kilometers [1]. Putting a smilarly capable radio telescope on the Moon would increase the largest baseline, and therefore the resolution, by ~300x.

why cant we keep hubble? retrofit it and tow it back out into a further orbit? seems nuts to crash it, when we can always use another telescope, especially in visible and UV.

Wait Matt.. You didn't mention anything about lunar impacts.. Earth's atmosphere protects us from meteors, but the moon doesn't have such protection. Wouldn't lunar telescopes be subjected to constant bombardments of pebbles and the occasional meteor?

Dave from the EEV blog interviewed a Roverbuilder recently talking about the design challenges to build a rover. Very informative.

The Great Moon Telescope is my favorite project that nobody talks about. I think it would be the greatest project ever and possibly give us another science revolution.
