I was at the Stonehenge reconstruction at Marysville, WA during the total solar eclipse 40 years ago. The scene was amazing- lots of neo-tribal hoo-ha and Pagan stuff going on. There was also a small herd of cattle (that went a bit bonkers as totality approached). The spot where the stones are is on a bluff overlooking the Columbia River, and we could see clear to the horizon looking west into Oregon. When the shadow came, it was this huge wide band clear across the western terrain that raced full on right at us at 2000 miles per hour. I wasn't the only one who ducked as it passed overhead! At totality everyone lost it and there was this palpable sense of primal awe that just grabbed everyone. My knees started trembling and I remember having to wipe away tears to see clearly. The experience was truly astounding. Fortunately, I live within 30 miles of the band of totality for this one, so expect to have another fantastic experience (though without the pagans and tribal elements). :)

"Astronomical events of this caliber can change your life." As someone who witnessed the total eclipse from 1999 (last of the millenium), this cannot be stressed enough. Also, "way off the beaten path" is the best place to watch this. Screw eclipse parties. They just distract you from all the weird stuff going on around you.

Highly recommended! I caught the total eclipse in Feb. 79 in Bozeman MT. Crisp sub-freezing, clear weather; we had a clear 40 mile view across the Gallatin Valley. A wall of darkness approached from the southwest; night; a wall of light moved towards us from southwest; day. Spectacular!

Whatever you do don't miss this. I saw the Feb. 1979 total eclipse and it did change my life. Now I live on the Oregon Coast just a few miles from centerline. I have my #14 welder's glass and an expectation of awe . Here we are more worried about gridlock (not many roads between the mountains and the sea) than we are about cloud cover.

I love how PBS Space Time fearlessly takes us deep into the theory, then steps back to show us the everyday (or every 40 years) beauty. Science happens both inside our minds as we think about observations, deductions, inferences and theories to unite them, and outside us as we seek new and ever better observations, always taking a moment to appreciate the world and universe we get to live in and observe.

In august 1999 there was a total solar eclipse and i was lucky enough to experince it eventho i was 5 years old. That was one of the must spectacular moments in my life. Ever since that moment i'm pretty much obsessed with space, stars, planets and i devour every single information i found on this topic. My point is - *MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT!*. A total eclipse is so shocking. It turns from day to night in like 30 seconds. And from a torrid temperature it almost instantly feels like you want to put a jacket on. And the animals/insect sounds are so crazy; it's like all creatures suddenly shout WTF.

Last year there was a 97% total solar eclipse where I live. There was cloud cover though so I thought there was no point in going out and watching it. Luckily my dad was outside at the time and shouted for me to go outside. Amazingly the overcast skies blocked just enough of the sunlight that you could watch it with your naked eye. It looked truly incredible, if you have an opportunity to see it, then see it. You won't be disappointed.
