This commonly asked question will demonstrate your communication skills, conflict negotiation skills, problem solving skills, ability to influence with data, etc. It is important to have a great answer if you are asked this question. I hope this video helps!

Awesome insight into this question. Great tips on how to structure the answer for it. I not only love what you publish on your channel, but also how you present your content - positive, structured, rich and actionable.

The example was so long, I lost track, but the idea of restructuring the question is spot on, I'll take that.

Wow. This is a lot. A very rich answer. I wasn't expecting this answer to be 3+ minutes since most of your videos say 30s-1min answers. Is this question an exception? What other common interview questions are an exception? Also, this is definitely something you cannot fabricate. LOL. If it actually happened you can remember the details. Maybe not all of them but that's where practice comes in. Thanks Jeff. As always, great info.
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 года назад
CSneedInc, all behavioral answers should be 3-4 minutes. Open-ended questions vary greatly, but typically, 5 minutes with one strong solution, sometimes much longer with multiple solutions and a good back and forth. The only interview answers that should be one minute are for common questions like tell me about yourself, why this company, where do you see yourself in five years, etc.
@CSneedInc

@@jeffhsipepi Thanks so much. This is very insightful. So, anything that involves a situation or the STAR method, we can have longer answers? This is great news because my answers to conflict/disagreement, leadership, mistake questions were much longer than 1minute. Pretty much any question where I had to use the STAR method. Thanks again.

Thanks for the awesome content, Jeff! I've noticed you use pseudo-names (i.e. Sue, Jane, and Bob) in some of your videos. Is the use of pseudo-names something you recommend in interviews? Also, if we were to use it, is this something we need to mention at the start of the interview? Like do we say something like "Throughout the interview, if necessary, I'll be using a set of pseudo-names to help bring my answers to life...."
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 4 года назад
Jessica, I want you to directly address your interviewer, if you do not catch their name or their name is difficult, ask them to repeat it, I want you to be addressing them throughout the interview. Thanks!
@jessy9801
@jessy9801 4 года назад
Thanks for the swift response, Jeff! And yes, totally agree on addressing the interviewer directly. I was referring more around using pseudo-names in our answers. Rather than just saying she/he or saying “my boss”, I noticed you use names which I noticed makes the stories more powerful. Do you advice using actual names of the people in the story or just pseudo-names?
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 4 года назад
@@jessy9801 Oh yes, good question, if the person maybe has a tricky name you may want to replace or if there is a potential confidentiality issue, but if you can use it. This will make the person easier to remember for your interviewer. Thanks!

Do you have to have "won" the disagreement in order for it to be a good example? Based on your commentary surrounding needs of the company, I'm leaning toward no.

Dave, yup! It's not about winning, it is about positively reflecting on what happened and focusing on learnings/applied learnings. Great comment!

Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing this wealth of information. I feel this answer is very long ( more than 5 minutes) , would the interviewer just get bored by such a long example? I have read the answers should be 1-2 minute long. What are your thoughts?
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 4 года назад
Hrishikesh, great question! When it comes to the length of your answer, NOBODY, can tell you how long it should or should not be, including me. A good answer has a simple and clear situation, actions that get into the details that help demonstrate what you actually did, and results/learnings that blow your interviewer away. Ideally, five minutes or less, but again, that is only my opinion. Lastly, and the biggest reason why no one can tell you the amount of time is because they are assuming they know your audience and they do not. Some interviewers love to hear a great story (focused on doing actions), while others interviewers are more focused on their agenda and prefer for candidates to rush through their answers. So create dynamic answers and then adapt/adjust to your audience. Thanks!

@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 3 года назад
Rosalind, sorry for the delay in responding. If you have never had a disagreement, focus on a time when you had differing opinions or a time where you pushed back against an item that you did not agree with. The best way to preface your answer would be, "I have been fortunate in my career to not have a disagreement with my boss, but I can provide an example where we had differing opinions..." I hope this helps!

0:38 Isn't this "not raising voice enough" simply a function of Anglo-American culture of always wanting to "voice their input"' *regardless of* whether it will come across as ignorant or insensitive (e.g. stereotyping)?
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 года назад
CaradhrasAiguo49, I make no assumptions or stereotypes of who does or does not raise their voice, this has nothing to do with anything other than that particular person's personality type. And while I recommend having a strong voice, this is not in everyone's comfort zone.

I think this answer is missing the key points on disagreement . This sounds more like example of how did you achieve a challenging task. Sounds too fake .

@jeffhsipepi 3 года назад
glass door, thank you for your feedback, I went back and watched the example answer after seeing this comment. The actions do have a focus on the actions I took to compile data and less on the specific actions with Jane, there could have been more of a focus on the interpersonal skills. Thanks!

@jeffhsipepi

Anish, I don't recommend it unless you have built tremendous rapport with your interviewer. Some interviewers hate jokes! I like it, but defaulting to no jokes is always my recommendation. I know, pretty boring!

Isn't this example a bit too long?
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 3 года назад
Zurkram, YES!!! My answer in this example is way too long, I wanted to provide a lot of data in my sample example, but I would not want your answer to be this long. Ideally, 3 minutes and 30 seconds: 30 seconds for the situation/task, 2 minutes on actions, and one minute on results/learnings. I like longer answers with depth, so targeting that 3 to 4 minute time frame, but yes, this answer is 6 minutes. Thank you so much for this comment, it was so necessary :)
