Actually, biochemical engineering is a subset of chemical engineering. It's essentially chemical engineering with biological applications; in other words, it's the engineering of "biochemicals." It's a more specialised discipline than chemical engineering, and obviously, biochemical engineering involves at least a little biochemistry and biology, whereas chemical engineering is the broader discipline encompassing the engineering of all chemicals, including "biochemicals." Biochemical engineering is what happens when chemical engineering mixes with biochemistry and biology, and it's at the intersection of those fields, analogous to how biochemistry is at the intersection of chemistry and biology and is what happens when chemistry mixes with biology.

I'm someone who's interested in synthetic biology and I believe that bioengineering and biochemical engineering will help me reach a point where I can do that kind of research

The video was really detailed and clear. I teared up while watching this tbh. This was something I always wanted to study after I was done with highschool but didn't get the chance to do so. Maybe one day if all's good I'll try studying it in my country. Cheers to whoever reads it till this far.. Peace ✌️

I am very much interested in becoming an engineer once I am older, specifically one that is entangled with genetics and molecular concepts-possibly one that also has ties to quantum mechanics as well. I was wondering what else is there in this type of job, or if there are others that I can consider. As a young girl of fourteen, I'm already planning on what degrees I should take in college, the best college to attend, etc. Can you please give me a link or some other contact to gain more info? Please and thank you.

Hi there, that's great news that you're interested in engineering! A good place to start your research is with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, they have a website for students that can give you an idea of the scope of careers available: www.theiet.org/students/index.cfm? You can also see all the areas that UCL Engineering offers here: www.engineering.ucl.ac.uk/departments-index/ I would also encourage you to attend open days for colleges or universities that are near you, these are usually free to attend and you can speak directly to people from the different departments that might help you decide what future direction to take. I hope that helps.

I study Biotechnology and its EXACTLY what you mentioned, except quantum mechanics is more on a investigation base instead of industry. But there are a lot of ways biotechnology can interact with quantum mechanics, investigations like DNA interfering with X-rays and nuclear synthesis of organic molecules. But first you need to study biochem, physics, maths, biology, then later take a quantum mechanics course (after taking many physics courses) to get on that boat. I'm working on metabolism of cells which is quite interesting! It helps on understanding more efficient ways of synthesizing enzymes and hormones in chemical processes and genetically modifying bacteria to produce harder and more complex hormones like insulin. My thesis is about the ways biotechnology interferes with pharmacy and vegetation.

I suggest using reddit. Ask questions or Google "biochemical engineering reddit" you will see what other people have said about this area of study. Good luck to you

@@jovanimartinez8277 I'm also fun of the concept of metabolism and use biological processes in the industry so I took chemical engineering and soon take on biochemical engineering

Hi Raj, to find out more information you need to get in touch with the department directly (as we just manage the channel and aren't based in the department). Here's the details: course content www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/undergraduate/degrees/biotechnology-bsc/2019 email is biosciences-admissions@ucl.ac.uk or phone +44 (0)20 7679 7169 Hope that helps

Hi the video is very good and I have a few questions. Firstly I want to ask you what's the difference between biochemical engineering and biochemistry ? Secondly, I want to know after the graduation of biochemical engineering can I study and research on diseases. Thirdly after the graduation of biochemical engineering can I work in CDC or WHO ? Thank you :)
@UCLOutreach

Good question and thanks for asking! We teach Biochemistry as part of our course, but we also cover in addition process engineering. Biochemical engineers look at applications e.g. a biochemist might discover a new enzyme, but a biochemical engineer would work on how to manufacture this, or how the enzyme could be used in industry to produce a chemical compound in a more effective way. We need to understand biochemistry to be able to work with different cell types, and characterise how they respond to environments in a bioreactor. In terms of diseases, our researchers work with clinicians and scientists on how to manufacture vaccines more safely and reduce cost. See here for a £17 million Gates Foundation project awarded to our department www.engineering.ucl.ac.uk/news/dr-tarit-mukhopadhyay-awarded-17-67m-gates-foundation/ If you would like to know more about careers we are holding a webinar on the 18th January, we will make this available online on the Biochemical Engineering webpages after the event. Registration is free and you are welcome to attend: www.ucl.ac.uk/biochemeng/prospective-students/open-days/undergraduate-vod-180118

Thank you for your feedback It's very helpful. But I still have a question I read your message and I understand that biochemical engineers work on the manufacturing of vaccines or something. It's good but that's not the thing I want to work because I want to work on viruses and bacteria in the laboratory. And then I want to find a cure for some diseases or cancer. The question is can I do what I mentioned above if I study biochemical engineering if I would not which major is better for me? Have a nice day...

It sounds like you would be more suited to biochemistry - or have you looked at the Division of Infection and Immunity at UCL? Here they look at infection, immunology, microbiology and virology www.ucl.ac.uk/infection-immunity Hope that helps!
