The NHS has informed me that my toes are probably either sprained or fractured, but that I should just sit down and buddy tape them and go to minor injuries if it still hurts to walk in a month's time. Anyway, buddy taping has actually helped a lot. Unrelated: there's a cheese restaurant in London somewhere and I know what I'm doing for my birthday :D
I once went to a show/meal called The Guild of Cheesemakers. I've no idea if it was ever revived but it included assorted cheeses paired with artisan breads and wines while the show went on round us. And then came a philosophical discussion at the end. I think it would be something you would love. My wild idea is to go parachuting for my hundredth birthday. Still got 45 years to go though so plans may change.
I'm not saying that buying an entire suit of armour solely to bounce in it is completely self-indulgent... But I'm sure there's a scientist out there somewhere who would be grateful for the research!
@@bekar_au The collaboration we never knew we needed. I'm having visions of Jill in a full harness from Plessis now (though given what his backlog is usually like, we'd be waiting a few years for that video).
@@prospero4183 I think Kevin would smack you in the face with his least-favourite smithing hammer if you suggested he make sabatons with combat wedges.
@@vforwombat9915Jill hasn't actually killed anyone (as far as we know), so can't quite be called "deadly". Agree with the rest of your summary, though.
@@vforwombat9915 guns in general are proven to be able to cause death, even if a particular gun hasn't. Unless you're willing to go so far as to claim that all humans (or even all adult humans) are able to cause death, then you have insufficient evidence that Jill is deadly. (If you do go the "all [adult] humans are deadly" route, then "deadly" is rather weakened as an adjective, since it applies to most people.)
@@myladycasagrande863 "then you have insufficient evidence that Jill is deadly." hmm. well, i can't test it. i guess we'll have to convince Jill to kill ppl to see whether or not she can. or, were i to care to argue, i could make the case that extreme proficiency in the use of a deadly weapons and/or combat is an indicator of deadliness. would we call an armed trained special forces soldier deadly even if they never killed anyone? if so, is Jill proficient in weapons use?
The problem with a trampoline is the acceleration at the bottom of the bounce where you change direction. The 'gravity would cause the already heavy armor to increase at least 1.5X. The helmet alone would cause problems. I remember a DJ doing a stunt, wearing a motorcycle helmet on a rollercoaster like Super-Dave Osborne for an afternoon. He had to remove it after a few rounds due to headache and some ended up with some pretty good neck problems.
@@jackiemowery5243 was thinking along similar lines. that steel traveling at high acceleration could be bruising if any edges could potentially touch flesh. probably not enough to break bones, but then of one tried any tricks like bouncing on knees or rear, the force of the metal plate might hit areas or organs that could do internal damage. then there's the question of how it's attached. i'm no expert, but don't they usually attach w straps? which could break, and sent large pieces of steel flying off in hazardous directions at unknown speeds. all of this seems quite possibly dangerous, and i recommend several experiments be done using test subjects other than a redheaded waif. as to that, i hear a certain tv personality in the states is currently looking for a new job, and he seems like an ideal subject.
Lindybeige bought a suit of armor with the same idea, but hasn't actually made videos of that yet I suspect COVID played a role. Maybe the motivation was low. Or, maybe there was something in that pipeline which was harder than expected
@@vforwombat9915 I think you need to investigate how armour is worn and attached. People can do all sorts of whacky things in a fitted suit of armour... including modern military obstacle courses, running, jumps, rolls and handstands. Armour shouldn't be touching flesh. That's why people wore proper clothing under their armour.
I have the persistent feeling that a collab between you and Bernadette Banner would turn out a complete hoot. She dismantling non-sensical costuming choices and you ranting about non-functional armour is an absolute dream of mine. Also, bouncing in a suit of armour in a bouncy castle would be hilarious.
I feel that a "can you do X activity in full plate armour" would be an excellent series. Also it would be really fun to see you try different types of historical weapons, be it in a stage-combat way or otherwise.
@@probablythedm1669 Easy enough to work around. Just approach each person and ask them and explain the premise. If they agree, she takes a moment to assess and then gives them a sticker.
I’d love you to test out cosplay armor materials and styles (EVA, worbla, cardboard, faux leather, 3d printer, etc.) and review how you think they would hold up in an actual fight. You could either commission pieces or just bring some cosplayers onto the channel as a colab! I’d also love to see you make your own dream set of armor, but that might be a more long-term idea lol.
I'm not sure there's a point in reviewing cosplay armor materials, as they're quite literally "not actually armor", but a combination of armor review, "what we'd do to make it better" and cosplayer collab could be awesome.
@@arthanor9631 While they're all "not actually armor", they do still offer different degrees of protection to different types of attacks that Jill could rate them on.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you were able to go backstage at a museum and give your opinions on REAL historical armour and costumes . I’m sure there would a few “Just stab me now’s”
- Yes, to armor on a trampoline! (But do be careful, that sounds potentially hazardous) - Yes, to cheese tasting! (It is a thing, I'm sure) - Yes, yes, yes, to more fight analyses!!! (I love analyzing and listening to people analyzing, and you do so wonderfully well at breaking things down without tearing them down, if that makes sense) - Please more Fantasy Heroine! (Don't stress yourself, but when you can, please 🙏) - As for other ideas, I'm afraid I don't do well at coming up with crazy things - at least not on demand, my brain's kind of difficult like that. But whatever you do, I'm sure it will be great! (I've been doing parentheses after each sentence and I feel I must finish as I've started) Congrats on 12 years, here's to many more! (BTW, you're amazing!)
If you do get a suit of armour then there is the potential for a huge series of "Can you do X in a suit of armour?" videos. Ideas off the top of my head: Ride the London Underground Do a weekly shop at the supermarket Row across a river or lake in a small boat Accurately throw throwing knives Climb a (small) mountain Forge a dagger Eat cheese (this could be a short)
Seconding that I would love to see a practical series of "Can you do X in a suit of armor". Also a bit more niche might be comparing things done in armor vs out of armor just to see which specific parts of these activities are harder. Riding horses, climbing ladders, etc.
The Taming of the Shrew scene you shot a few years ago was so cool, it would be amazing if you could do more like that now that you have a budget! Like maybe translating fight scenes from text to screen, or doing your own version of fights you analyze
Beatrice and Benedick verbally spar beautifully in Much Ado. I wonder if you could find a way to add fight choreography to that one? Could be flirty. :D
+Design your ideal "I'd wear it because it's awesome" armor. +Shakespeare fight scene from page to performance: How to choreograph, pick weapons, costume, blocking/positioning? +Armor/Weapon selection and concealment tips for when you need to *literally* dance at the gala ball and don't want to stab yourself/your partner...yet. +More flirty fight deep dives (loved your take on movement as insights into emotions with Pride & Zombies).
Yes, Jill, there is such a thing as cheese tasting. My local town, Trujillo in Spain, hosts the national cheese festival once a year in May. Visitors can wander round tasting a huge variety of cheeses, usually served with a slice of baguette so your palette doesn't get overwhelmed. The cheeses aren't just Spanish, although local makers are obviously well-represented. Trujillo is a wonderful place to visit too - you should definitely come. (No, I don't work for the Tourist Board.😂)
Not too crazy of an idea, but one you're in a uniquely good position to do: take an action scene from a written story (in this case from your own) and have people from different backgrounds adapt it to screen. For example, have someone from a performing background create a rough draft, then have someone in screenwriting make one, then have someone with writing experience but no film experience make a draft, and finaly have someone with directing experience make a draft. And also you would make a draft obviously. Once everyone had independently made a version you could go over and analyze how even from the same basic material you can get different results when adapting things to screen based on someone's background and experience. You seem to know enough people in the right fields to do something like this. After the analysis portion you could then shoot some of it, maybe even get everyone together to make a collaborative version after they could read each other's drafts to highlight why collaboration in production can be a good thing. Anyways, congratulations on the anniversary and thanks for all the quality content you've been posting. I look forward to more.
Oh yea, that sounds awesome! Those written scenes are so confusing sometimes, I'd love to see them played out and/or to see if they're at all realistic!
Andrew Huang does something a little similar getting multiple composers or producers to work on a musical score? It'd be great to see that approach applied to an action context! 🙂
An entire series on what you can and can't do in a suit of armor would be fantastic. But also, I love everything you've been doing :) My audacious goal is to publish a duology. I've written the first draft of the first book and most of the draft for the second, so now I have to edit it all... and then all those other steps for actually publishing it.
Cheese tasting, of course! I'm sure it exists! Yes, make another knife...or a sword! And YES, ABSOLUTELY, I want to see you bounce on a trampoline in a full suit of armor, after a video showing you getting fitted for said suit of armor, and one of you suiting up. Can you have an emergency medical technician standing by? (EDIT: while bouncing, of course! Not while being fitted, etc.) While I want to see this, I don't want you to break! RIDING in the suit of armor, learning to joust and "fight" on horseback! (Can you ride?) Learning to ride! In armor! I've always wanted to have a suit of armor. I live vicariously through you, Jill!😮
For you I've missed you committing acts of sewing. The "well let's do this quick and dirty but practical enough" vibe is excellent. Attempting to do, stage combat style, the fight scenes from books you love. A tier list from well written easily translatable to physics doesn't work that way or similar would be delightful.❤ My crazy dream that is nearly done is building a cob house. Took most of 10 yrs of summers. New dream is a friend of mine is starting a publishing house in Canada for poetry, focusing on queer and neurodivergent poets. I'm one of the editors and our dream is to both pay people and break even financially. I might try and write an opera, I know nothing about them nor music composition really. I like starting from scratch on crazy projects.
My wild goal is to buy an anvil and either make or buy a forge and start doing blacksmithing again. I would love to see you make a dagger and/or go cheese tasting.
I discovered you early on in lockdown, when the algorithm recommended your Jack Sparrow vs. Will Turner video, and I just never left. So just about 3 years now, and it's been a true joy to watch the channel grow and evolve. I'm glad you're getting back to fight analyses, since that's what brought me here in the first place, but I've loved just about everything you've made. Thanks for you being you, Jill!
1. You could rank user submitted fight scenes 2. You could do something similar to the Jupiter Ascending vid and fix bad/lackluster/confusing fight scenes 3. You could rank the fight usefulness of several everyday items from candle holders to rolling pins 4. You could stage a tavern brawl (in a cheese restaurant) 5. You could design a dream sword in collaboration with your audience and then (let someone) forge the design!
Here's a completely bonkers idea. A cheese themed DND campaign (or what every rp system) just think it would be funny to see a semi serious story line around cheese
many decades ago i did a candy based dungeon, gummy bears, licorice whips, Mr Peanut who used his cane to shoot peanuts at you, chocolate elemantal that could only be hurt by the +2 rubber spatula that they failed to pick up earlier in the dungeon, and the cavity creeps who attacked your teeth with tiny pickaxes
*time for the concept of just stab me now...with a wedge of cheese to be revisited...if there were ever a limited run of exclusive shirts printed with that on it i'd be very much inclined to obtain one*
A series of video to show us the "behind the scenes" of stage combat and movie costums. Things like : - who decides what the costums will be (I'm assuming it's the movie director, but that may vary) - how the costums are designed - how the costums are crafted - how it feels to wear those costumes for hours With interviews of professionals and maybe even filming them while they're actually working on a movie. And the same kind of videos with stage combat as well. Otherwise, just continue what you're doing ? I'm already enjoying most of your content as it is.
On the ‘do other people want to know if you can bounce on a trampoline in a full suit of armour’ question - I’m pretty sure you know that many (most?) of your viewers would love to know. Even if none of us are quite sure *why* we want to know.
My “out there” goal right now is trying to write a novel whilst also revising for final exams. A lot of sleepless nights but I don’t regret a single one! Also, for the channel I’d love to see you stage a fight using food as weapons or trying to make weapons out of food
I would love to see you go backstage at productions with fights (e.g. romeo and juliet the ballet) and talk to the stage staff and performers about the process. Especially for training performers with little experience
Jill, I love bonkers goals! I had an incredibly bonkers goal a long time ago. I grew up in West Virginia, a rural state in the US not known for opera. But I wanted to be an opera singer. I was made fun of. A lot. But I worked and worked, and then worked some more. I worked on my singing, on acting, on languages. And I am happy to report that I became an opera singer. It was glorious, and everything that I had hoped it would be. I am now retired from the operatic stage. But I teach, and sing in the occasional concert. Sometimes the bonkers goals work out and are amazing!
Annette, I'm so happy that you achieved your goal! I've been a singer (amateur) my whole life, so I have some idea of the work you had to put in to become a professional opera singer! Lots and lots of work. BTW, I lived in WV for a year and loved it so much that I was "homesick" for it for a number of years following.
How about a tier ranking of every cheese in the Monty Python cheese shop skit? Congratulations. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that you are making decent money from entertaining me (and at least a half million others)
Not sure if there's much swordplay but Jackie Chan's old films have some amazing fight scenes you might look at. I remember them as being easier to follow compared to modern films which seem to switch camera every second.
My personal scary goal at the moment is moving halfway across the world to finish a degree and then get a job doing something I truly enjoy. Channelwise, I think a series of “What can you do in x type of armor?” Might be good and or hilarious. Stretch idea, it’d be great if you hosted your own stage combat course(digitally or IRL). You always seem so knowledgeable! Keep it up!🎉❤
How about the oldest fight scene you can find? See how far back in cinema you can go and still find actual choreography? I wonder what it was like doing all that with old tech, where you can't just edit stuff in or out easily.
I'm an athlete and I love content that involves people trying new sports/activities or generally getting out of their comfort zone physically. You'd mentioned stage combat is easier with dance or martial art experience so maybe trying dance classes or learning martial arts (when your toe gets better of course). For me I've never been a runner ever but I'm signed up for a 5k race in 2 months and I took a pole dancing class with a friend recently.
The thought of you in full plate or mail jumping on a trampoline fills me with joy. I have never before wondered if someone could successfully jump on a trampoline so encumbered but I am definitely curious now. Happy anniversary and hopfully many more to come.
What happens if you fall over on the soft grass? What happens if you fall over onto a steel sheet which spreads the load so you don't sink into the grass? What happens if you fall over in a suit of armour on the soft grass? Probably not as nice as falling over on soft grass.
The thought of anyone bouncing on a trampoline in plate armor fills me with dread, it seems a perfect recipe for splitting said trampoline and becoming part of the FailArmy. Perhaps it can also be a study in armorproof trampolines. Now springboards, those I could get behind.
I would love to see you talking to professional fight coordinators and stunt doubles (those who work on films) for more insight in how they are put together. BTW well done on 500k!
Congratulations on 12 years! Ooh, ooh, I'd love to hear your analysis of the fighting in _The Three Musketeers / Four Musketeers,_ 1973/1974 version. There was so much variety in them, they taught me how to use terrain, improvised weapons, and the situation.. Those films also inspired my lifelong interest in swords, et al and foppish dress. They included so many strange vignettes that added to the atmosphere, too.
BTW, the cast was outrageously powerful, all gave amazing performances. Milady deWinter will _always_ be Faye Dunaway in my mind, she was in particular perfect.
Happy Anniversary, Jill! Congratulations. I was one of those people who joined about 2 1/2 (? 3??) years ago, after your video on logical fallacies hit my home page on RU-vid. Then, I found your videos on Narnia, plus a hundred others, and I loved them. Suggestion: How about touring the United States?? You could end (or begin?) the trip in Hollywood for behind-the-scenes on fight scenes, etc. You could also make it to a few fantastic Renaissance Festivals here in America. Keep up the great work!
Would love to see you go back to the blacksmith! That was fun to see the process. Maybe a series on learning arts like that, glassblowing, leatherwork, etc. What about recreating some of the fights you've analyzed? Learning the choreo, minor stunts, etc. My big hairy audacious goal: tame my kids' playroom 😂😂😂
First of all I have to say that it has been a blast watching your videos so far, so many cool stuff told in a fun and entertaining way. So no matter which crazy ideas you have, Im sure they will be as fun to watch as they have always been (Im also curious about an armor on a trampolin but I see a great potential for injuries there if anything goes wrong). Personally I would like to see more armor reviews, never ending armor reviews, more, more, moooooreeeee. Secondly cheese tasting actually exists (but I dont know if it does everywhere). Thirdly congratulations to half a million subscribers! and that you can pay people what they are worth now! Dont forget though to pay the person who's mostly in your videos (yourself) what she is worth!
I would LOVE if you analyzed an Errol Flynn fight, preferably the one against Sir Guy and the battle for Nottingham. Or the staff fight with Little John. Honestly I feel like the whole Adventures of Robin Hood is ripe with candle-hucking, helmet-bonking brilliance.
Congrats to 500k! 🎉 I would love to see more cosplaying / sewing / crafting videos! I especially loved the cheese tasting idea, maybe make your own cheese at home? 🧀
y'know, if you felt like it, I'd really love to see another craft project of some kind, whether that be costume or Knife Take Two, etc. I'm the kind of person who has lots of ideas but isn't in the habit of pursuing them. I've thought about plushie making, making my own clothes, pottery, sequential art... one day I might even follow through...!
Oooh, yes! More forging, please! And definitely cheese tasting! Fun fact, I love cheese so much that for the holidays, my mom bought me a "12 days of Christmas" cheese box! (Got it from Trader Joe's if you're interested.) I'm excited to see more fight analyses. They are some of my favorite videos that you do, and I'm glad to see them coming back. Also, please do some more things about weapon/armor choice. Your boob armor and block heel rant videos are two of my personal favorite videos on the channel, and the "Size DOES Matter" video is the video that helped me find your channel in the first place
It would be great to see this channel coordinate/team-up with channels that have similar interests to make a big project - i.e. write, choreograph, costume, perform, score, and produce a fight scene
That would be awesome, complete with behind-the-scenes mini-documentaries talking about how the project is developed from start to finish, similar to the Rocket Jump TV show.
Congratulations, Jill! I'm so happy for you. On the topic of your video, I'd love to see you build or commission a blacksmith to construct a suit of functional Cyberman armor (your choice of era / Doctor regeneration) to see how well it would function as combat armor. Also, it would be awesome to see you collaborate in person with Shad Brooks of Shadiversity. In terms of my old wild ideas for my life, I'd like to start doing Krav Maga. Congrats again to the marvelous maven of fight breakdowns and armor reviews!
I’m here for the cheese tasting and associated tier ranking of them. Truly I’d watch pretty much anything you wanted to create. I came for the hair and the accent and stayed because of the uniqueness of the channel. I love a good tier list and a good ramble. Here’s to many more years to come. 💕
I only recently discovered your channel and you are an absolute delight and a breath of fresh air! Not sure how the RU-vid algorithm came to recommend you, but I am a bit of a history, archeology and movie nerd who loves people who are clever with words and who follows a few makers of historical costumes, so that probably makes sense... I find all of your content entertaining, so my advice is to continue to do what you enjoy. I'm loving the sound of some older movie reviews, because that's where my interest lies. Was thrilled to find your Court Jester review. As a fan of Basil Rathbone, I would love a review of the Adventure of Robin Hood (1938).
I've been here for a while, I love listening to you waffle! My mad idea is to have a small tailoring service business for Thrifties, and to start writing again. I wish to second vote a Bernadette Banner collab, she can do clothes, you can do armor!
In my crazy pants idea file - I would like to see all municipal buildings have solar panels on their flat roofs. In my Jill Bearup world - random acts of sewing would amuse. I like the "wandering about Comicon handing out stickers" and a partnership with one of the historical sewists that some other of your fans have suggested. And you should absolutely do a cheese tasting.
Or gardens and water reservoirs on municipla building flat roofs. Or all of the above. Good goals! I'll stan for sewing, costume reviews, and random acts of randomness. Cheese tasting's up there, too.
Congratulations! I came for the fight analysis and stayed... for no particular reason beyond that I enjoy your content. Also, "big hairy goal" (and something I consider to be a bit of pipe-dream/bucket list item): I'd love to learn to fire a bow and arrow whilst riding a horse. Although I don't really have any interest in learning to do either of those things individually. A more realistic goal this year is that I'd like to learn to make clothes. Specifically I want to make a hoodie with an embroidered design on the front and screen printed back and sleeve designs.
Glad you’re succeeding at your chosen profession Jill! Keep doing what you’re doing! Suggestions: -You could try armored combat. -Forge a rapier/arming sword for your personal strength level. -Make a Ranger’s Apprentice cloak. -Do a firearms movie combat course (if that’s a thing). -Try falconry. -Try jousting -Ideal thief/rogue/assassin outfit (corset optional). -Do a dance class with your husband. -Try voice lessons. -Forge a helmet. -Fight review the Mandalorian. -Practice with throwing knives. -Update the Murder Dress.
Great ideas! Star Wars/Mandalorian fight/armor reviews! Yes to jousting on sk8boards, bikes and shopping carts! Also, Jill please design a helmet with better peripheral vision.
There is a story in Alexander the Great's campaign where he attacked a cliff top fortress, he supposedly offered a talent of silver to any soldier that climbed the cliff face and attacked. I have taken up bouldering as a hobby recently which made me wonder how would it feel to climb in that kind of armour and the logistics of getting the weaponry up the cliff face
I'd love to see you design (and, if possible, create) your ideal suit of armour and your choice of weapons to go with it and then choreograph a fight scene with it all, that project would produce near endless video content and fun! Cheese tasting: definitely yes! For myself I once wanted to open an international bookshop/book exchange where people could come and buy and donate books in other languages. (I was a language student struggling to find books in the languages I was studying.) Before ebooks and big online stores became widely available it seemed like a very lovely and possibly workable idea, now it seems like an impossible one, but I still love the theory!
My two goals for this year are 1. Finish the first draft of my novel and 2. Finish my horror audiodrama, that I am currently writing as well. Also yes you jumping on a trampoline in a full suit of armor sounds dangerous and downright hilarious so it must be done. Lol
I think the buying a whole suit of armor video would be really interesting and fun and informative! The cheese idea also fits the channel motif and I would definitely watch.
Congratulations! And hope your toes are feeling better soon 😊 On ideas - I’d love a fight analysis of a younger Basil Rathbone against Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood - also the film has an Oscar winning symphonic score by Korngold, who’s work inspired John Williams. So an option for a brief diversion into film music. For cheese tasting, maybe James Hoffman could be persuaded to team up and bring his coffee tasting skills. Very best wishes!
A half-million people are entirely spiffed just to get a glimpse into how the Jill brain works. It's the commentary and insight that are so much fun. Thanks so much!
My two cents / ideas for things that could be fun: 1. Book armour/fight reviews. Similar to the just stab me now / movie fight reviews, but of popular books. Or unpopular books. Or just books you loved/hated. I was reading a fantasy recently and obviously had to have the stabby always wears pants MC dress up for the ball but still bring her blades trope, and my immediate thought was -- how would Jill rate this? 2. Replicating rated costumes. Within reason as it's a lot of work, but it'd be fun to see if you could make a simple just stab me now outfit you'd written off as impossible to see if it's as impossible as you thought.
Congrats Jill, your growth is well deserved. I expect we will see a few more milestones blownpast. A few ideas for you... since you asked. - Do some videos involving various blacksmiths making armor for larps. Leather artists like Enric Pujol or even Bokalo's Armoury. And check the effectiveness.. or just get something nice to show off. - Address the age old questions of reality vs TTRPG. What level of, D&D or other system, fighter are you now based on your combat abilities? - Travel to armory museums or artisans and show various armors through the ages.
I would love...LOVE...to see you do an analysis series on all of the major fight scenes from Richard Lester's Three and Four Musketeers movies. These are two of my favorite comedy/adventure movies, I watch them multiple times a year, and absolutely love the fight choreography for these films. Your fight analysis for the Mask of Zorro is how I found you, and of course I would love to see you do my favorites. Thanks for everything Jill, and happy anniversary!!!
I would also say that your channel has inspired me to take up a dream that I had in my 20s about learning to be a stunt person and do fight choreography, and I have been researching where I could go to school for that near where I live.
Review/tier list the practicality and usefulness of different types of maille! Not just because there are a million designs/weaves nowadays which we're never used historically, but because why not? My bonkers idea is to mix maybe 5 maille styles into a fantasy armour piece just because I can, AND make it comfy enough to wear. I have the skill, just need to build it.
I found your channel because of the Armor Reviews. I became a Patron of yours because of the Fantasy Heroine shorts, I just enjoyed the whole thing from beginning to (hopefully not) the end. When I was actively role-playing, Dungeons and Dragons, I remember a quite heated debate about the mobility of a mounted character in Full Plate Armor being abruptly dismounted in combat, and I ruled that he was knocked to the ground and he is laying Supine, and cannot get up due to the weight of the armor that he was wearing. I would love your review on the mobility of a fighter in various types of armor, and what can, and cannot be done while wearing ____ type of armor.
There is nothing more exciting/interesting than a person talking about the stuff that THEY love. If you want to review it, I want to see it. Armor plus trampoline, absolutely.
Two fight films you might find it fun to analyze star Maureen O’Hara: “At Sword’s Point,” which is a children of the Musketeers film. She plays Claire, the daughter of Athos, and she goes toe-to-toe with any number of henchmen. Or, “Against All Flags,” a later Errol Flynn film in which she plays a pirate queen, Spitfire Stevens, and outfences Flynn in the big dustup at the end. Both are choreographed by Fred Cavens, who also did the 1940 Zorro, and they’re worth your time.
Most of my ideas for myself aren't at all crazy. The only crazy idea for myself is to live a happy and fulfilling life instead of wallowing away in despair. Watching your videos helps with the happy part at least. Especially when you covered my favourite movie of all time.
That is a lot of questions but I'll see if I can make this brief. What I would like see on this channel - Movie reviews of Rob Roy and The Duelist - Worst / Overrated duels in movies from a storytelling or thematic point of view Crazy Ideas for this channel - A strange one I've been trying to do myself is making a battle ready smallsword but with a modern orthopedic grip that you see on Olympic fencing blades. I feel like they would have had the technology to make something like this with materials they had at the time and I'm curious on how well it would function as a weapon. - Love the full armor set idea and testing it with various things. Personal crazy ideas - Have a complete collection of medieval Irish arms and armor. Not just gallowglass and kerns but ostman and hiberno norman. - Reconstruct Irish Gaelic cavalry. This is no stirrups, padded seat, and you use your lance overhand. I could list a lot more but this is what first came to mind.
Jill, since I found your channel, I've been inspired to really go for my weird hobby interest dreams. Keep doing what you're doing! Thoughts on Netflix's (and our queen, Leigh bardugo's) Shadow and Bone series? It's my lifeblood and a huge inspiration to me.
@@JillBearup Understandable! Her second book series Six of Crows seems to get more traction, and the crows intertwined into the show seems to propel people through it. Not everyone's cup of tea, though!
"it is a great joy to be able to pay people what their worth." Ah Jill, if only more people felt the way you do, the world would be a significantly better place. Thanks for all you do.
I love the variety of things you cover on this channel! Your recent fight analysis of the Court jester was up there with the Princess Bride one, and the armour rating ones are now your own niche, and so enjoyable. On the subject of trampolining armour I'm afraid there is one out there of a chap in armour vs a firefighter vs a fully-rigged out soldier (I think) all doing an assault course, so not as entertaining as a trampoline but does answer some of the same questions :) The few videos you did with your two friends of vastly differing heights are also great for comparing techniques and weaponry. Basically, all of it, plus cheese-tasting, sounds great. Thank you for all the enjoyable/educational/ridiculous videos, and more, please!
I have always been deeply envious of the folks who work at Disneyland (and probably all Disney parks, but I've only personally observed the CA version) in the Fantasmic show -- specifically when they'd have sword fighting between Peter Pan, Captain Hook, et al, whilst swinging from the rigging of the ship as it "sailed" by on the river. Maybe they don't even do this anymore; it's been a decade or more since I've forked over the pricey entrance fee. But swashbuckling aerialist shenanigans make my heart soar. Hard to pull off in your backyard, but you're a creative sort and would have fun figuring it out! ⚔️ ⛵
Pretty sure I would hurt myself practicing headstands in a wide open fully padded gym with a spotter, never mind in a smallish house next to a solid bedframe. Hope you recover soon, thanks for all the videos, and congrats on your success! (My own challenge? I keep myself busy with mostly volunteer work, but I would love to get more organized to edit and post cooking vids regularly. And yes, cheese tasting is definitely a thing. I've had cheese samplers as restaurants, and hosted wine and cheese parties. Buy things, taste them, don't be afraid to combine things that you like even if they aren't usual combinations. Buy an uncommon cheese and turn it into a grilled cheese sandwich. There's a wide range of possibilities.)
It's always fun to hear you review armour and fight scenes. What about scenes where you can compliment when it is done well? What should we look at? It's great to hear a local voice doing so well, good luck!
I would absolutely love to see you do an analysis of the final fight scene from Rob Roy (1995). It showcases a midevil (1713-ish) Scottish duel between Rob Roy (Liam Neeson, using a basket hilt broadsword) and Cunningham (Tim Roth, using a rapier). More enjoyable if you were to do so while tasting period era cheese available in the Highlands. 🙂
I followed your link. I watched Rob Roy when the movie came out and don't remember a thing about it! That said, this fight was very interesting and I think Jill could do a good job analyzing it!
@@annbrookens945 thank you kindly. The movie is worth a rewatch. It is based on a true story, far far better and more accurate than Braveheart, so don't worry about that bit.
I want to see more stage fighting. Flirtatious or otherwise. A stage production of all our favourite "enemies" to married couple bonding while fighting off robbers for example!!!!❤❤
A far fetched idea, recreations of your favourite fight scenes or even maybe your own sequences. I’d also love to see you break down all the technical details and show how you bring the final product together.
I love this ask you have made of us. It's honoring and flattering and just, fucking cool. As an adult, not many people ask "what are the wildest dreams you have for your own life OR this cool RU-vid space you care about OR both?" and it's freeing to hear. I shall consider and return, but right away: 1. Yes armor suit to do things in 2. Yes blacksmith because as a welder, blacksmith is originally what I wanted to do/ be, but its not as well paying an occupation as it once was so I had to adjust for now
Congratulations on the subscribers!! So very well-deserved ❤🎉🎉 also: I would absolutely one hundred percent be dying to see a full suit of armour day: bouncing on that trampoline (when your toes have recovered, of course 😅 ), trying to drink your morning coffee/tea, going grocery shopping… possibly a beach outing 😁 anything and everything that can fit into one Jill in Shining Armour’s day. As for my own outlandish goals: I want to publish books and have them read/reviewed by at least one person who isn’t related to me and feels honour-bound to cheer me up 😅 also, even though I have the coordination of drunk Bambi on ice, I want to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu someday, and I somehow imagine myself getting good enough to eventually teach it for free as a self defence class on weekends or something
Yes, cheese tasting absolutely exists! Here in New York State (USA) we’ve had wine trails for years, and for the past several years we’ve also had cheese trails. Makes for a great weekend day, plus great scenery!
Happy Anniversary, Jill!!! Thank you for being one of the best channels for content that is equal parts educational and entertaining. I'm sure there's some sort of portmanteau better than "edutainment" (ugh.) for those traits, but barring one in common usage, I'll call them "edenucatertaintional... -ing." Yes. Yes, I think that works. 🤔 Also? I LOVE your Fantasy Heroine series of shorts and the insight into your writing process you've given us and I absolutely cannot wait to read the final form! I love the idea of full-plate trampolining, but would proffer a step further. In which sort of armor (mail, half-plate, full-plate, some other armor type you know more about than I) can you get he highest RELATIVE bounce on a trampoline? That is, if we take the weight into account, do any of them afford you more "air" off the trampoline surface? I would theorize the relevant variable would be your freedom of movement, especially in your legs and hips, but am (suddenly) curious to see the comparison. For that matter, what about including some more modern armor in your testing? Of course the simple "bullet-proof" vest would likely be the least cumbersome, but there are other, more full-coverage modern armors out there... (This is, of course, in NO WAY merely a way to cross-section my Physics geekiness with my armor-/martial technology-geekiness.) Another idea for you: I know Medieval European martial technology is more your jam (cheese?), but I would be curious your opinion on other historical armors. How do the Japanese do-maru and Aztec ichcahuipilli (for examples) stand in whatever categories you deem important for armor (covering, material sturdiness, mobility, airflow, etc.)? As for my own crazy ideas? For one, I thought I'd write an epistle-length comment on the latest video from one of my favorite RU-vidrs (check). Then, I thought I might try to (finally) really buckle down and write a book (one of four swimming in my head) while also trying to get my Master's degree. Woohoo!!! (I'm not stressed. YOU"RE stressed!) 😁 Thank you again for being such a thoroughly charming, entertaining, and informative watch I look forward to every time you upload!
Congrats! I will literally watch you do anything since your videos bring me much calming joy 💖 My current goal is finding a job which appears to be nearly as impossible as finding a fantasy world to slip into atm...
This is such a refreshingly down-to-earth view of youtube as a career! Thank you for sharing your experience Jill! My personal project at the moment is trying to get better on the guitar. I love folk music & have slowly started posting a few most videos on this channel, since what's music if nobody can listen to it :) Have a great day everyone!
Yay! Thanks for all the fun. I think I found this channel about a year ago…maybe? Loads of fun, so happy it has developed into a sustainable thing for you creatively, and economically. Here’s to what’s next, whatever it is. My “way out there” adventure is likely going to be one of two things, or maybe both. I’m in my early to mid 40’s, and I’ve finally decided it’s high time I got a Motorcycle license. No, I don’t know how to ride. So a couple classes are in order. Not sure how long it’ll take before I will also own my first motorcycle, but it’s kind of locked in now, especially due to loads of rabbit hole diving I’ve done right here on YT. “Reasons” is why I’ll say it’s taken this long. The second is closer to something you yourself have tackled, and has been a thorn in my brain for years now, also due to the rabbit hole that is RU-vid, and a couple channels I subscribe to in particular. But this one is actually happening. This summer, I’ve been invited to join some friends in a knife making class. It isn’t blacksmithing, but more based on the stock removal technique. And after that, there WILL be a blacksmithing class, knife centric, that’ll be happening at a local maker space. So there is that. To say “I’m stoked” is equal parts pun definitely intended, and an understatement of the highest order! Anyway, thanks again. Hope your foot heals with rapidity.👍🏻
P.s. I live in Sonoma County, California. Cheese tasting is DEFINITELY a thing here. Not as prevalent as vino, which you can’t walk a block without tripping over a winery spot’s sandwich board. Or beer maker’s. Or cider room. Or, just “Yes, all the above”. Seriously, it’s kinda dizzying. But there are plenty of dairy’s, and artisan cheese makers here and there as a result. And they’re pretty eager not to miss out on all the tourist/local haunt fun. Just sayin’…
Any chance of you reviewing BAD movie fights and then showing what COULD have been done? I suspect this is a comment made that demonstrated a total lack of understanding of how much time it would require but 🤷
There’s an adage that a film is written three times (or born three times): by the script writer, by the director, and by the editor. You have a nice computer to do editing now: could you take a bad movie fight and give it a rebirth?
@@JillBearup You seem to be so much enjoyment out of reviewing bad armor and costuming decisions, so this certainly could be a winner... provided you can find films with badly-done fight scenes but which are not altogether unwatchable.
Cheese tasting sounds like a very on-brand thing to do! My slightly mad idea actually involves cheese--I got a cheese-making kit for my birthday! My own slightly mad ideas are a little long-term (homesteading, etc.), but cheese-making is a step in the right direction.
So happy your channel is doing well! I would love to see you investigate the research, design, and fabrication of your own 'ideal armor' across multiple videos. This would be something that fits your preferred fighting style, aesthetics, fantasy universe rules, and body shape/ergonomics. You could team up with other youtubers to look into historical & cultural armor trends, work with video game or costume design folks to make sketches or 3D models, and then have some or all of it prototyped in various levels of real materials. Or just get a sword made by michaelcthulhu :)
I first got hooked on your videos about how effectively one could fight in a dress/heels/corset etc, but I think you've done a pretty good job of demonstrating said already. I do enjoy the armor tier lists and older movie fight analysis. It could be cool to see some more acting/fighting/murder dress designs.
I desperately want to see someone bounce on a trampoline in full armour, but also doing other normal life things while in armour would be fun too. It would be fabulous if you learned a new fighty skill...like a series on learning archery or how to joust or something.
Whatever idea, crazy or otherwise, you end up pursuing, I´ll be here to watch it. And I have no doubt I´ll be enjoying, just like I always have when watching your videos.
