Great review. I have a motorhome wifi 5g ready antenna on the roof and think it has two mimo antenna connectors. Do you think it will work well with the RUTX50 or do I need to also invest in the Poynting antenna
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 10 месяцев назад
Hi, if the Motorhome WiFi antenna only has 2 LTE connections then it is only 2x2 Mimo - to benefit from the 4x4 Mimo connection on the X50 you would either need to add another 2x2 Mimo antenna or replace the existing one with a 4x4 Mimo antenna such as the pointing Mimo3-17

Thank you so much for this video. I have now bought and fitted the RUTX50 along with a Poynting Mimo 3-14 antenna. It is a fantastic pairing and am getting great speeds off EE and surprisingly Smarty. However I’m not sure on which of the 4 cellular antenna plugs goes to what 4 mobile connections on the router. The router just has 4 connections saying “mobile”. Whereas the antenna has “cell 1 main”, “cell 1 aux”, “cell 2 main”, “cell 2 aux”. Does it matter which way they are connected? Thanks
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
In my experience it doesn’t matter, but I do tend to put Cell 1 main and Aux on the first 2 connections (left side) and Cell 2 main and Aux on the second 2 connections (right side).

Hi. Great update. I don't have the need for 5g but want to install a Poynting MiMo that has a degree of future proofing as I intend using a Huawai E5577 initially and then trade up to a dual SIM RUTX. If I install the V2-17 rather than the V2-12, I understand the antenna performance will be compromised initially but I assume by much less than I am compromising with the initial choice of router so the V2-17 is worth installing from the outset?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Hi, that's a great question. I have just tried the V2-17 on our Huawei Router (obviously just connecting the 2x2 LTE) and Compared to the V2-12 it is usually connected to and I can see no difference in the performance. However it's worth noting that the 4x4 LTE element of the V2-17 is only relevant for the RUTX12, RUTX14 and RUTX50 routers as the others are have 2x2 MiMo LTE connections

If this had turned up last year I'd have almost certainly completely ignored the price and bought it with 2 sims but after a year of using my phone and having a 4G router for back-up I find that's OK 99% of the time.

Yep it is - but from my perspective, if running primarily on Celullar, that is pretty much always going to have a lower performance than WiFi6 - so I can't see it bringing a significant improvement to most people.

Can you expand on combining a 5G signal and a wifi signal. We are likely to use this at events where there will typically be wifi (of various speeds and quality). You imply that the router can combine these for faster speed.
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 5 месяцев назад
Hi yep it’s pretty simple. In the router settings you can search for and connect to the WiFi that is available. With the 5G LTE also connected. Then you change the network settings to “ Load Balancing” rather than “Fail Over” this will then combine the bandwidth available from the 2 networks.

Great video. Could you use Starlink on the wan port. If you lost Starlink then it would would to the strongest cell connection? The third party sim can connect you two the strongest cell prover.If you used a 3rd party sim that was connected to one of the sims could the router tell the sim to switch carriers if it become weak?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Месяц назад
Hi, thanks glad you found it useful. Yes if you have the Starlink Ethernet adapter you could connect via Ethernet and set that as priority with failover to other network connections. Or without the Ethernet adapter you could use the repeater function to connect ot the Starlink's WiFi and prioritise that. Though I suspect Ethernet would be better The Failover options do allow to switch SIM if one becomes weak, but not change carrier on the same SIM.

Yo, how long are those antenna cables on the Poynting Shark Antenna please? What's your experience using extra cables as extensions for 5G? Have you ever had 3 green bars on 5G on the RUTX50? Thanks!
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 4 месяца назад
The cable length is approx 2 meters. As a rule I don’t extend cables unless absolutely necessary as it will increase signal loss in. If you have to, then I would use extension cables of the same coax as the unit (HDF 195 in the case of the Mimo 3) and have them made up to the shortest length possible with high quality plugs and sockets.

I'm a bit baffled by the Teltonika Admin portal though and how to optimise it for best performance. e.g. I know there are two cell towers near by both using channels 3 & 20 but how do I know if I'm connected to them with the 4 antenna? Can I control which channels are used. Can you do a video on the Portal? Great content BTW, very informative, new subscriber here :D

Question: Is the power lead designed for regular (daily) plugging/unplugging similar to a laptop? I'm used to the 'usual' type of power connector and always thought the 4 pin variety were for more static uses, with unplugs every now and again. I'd be using this device (or maybe one of their simpler models) for mobile LTE travelling with laptop... in and out of a backpack.

Hi it’s Molex Micro Fit 4 plug socket for the power, which has a positive lock to stop it falling out with vibration. Their specs say they are designed for use where cycled frequently and to withstand high mating cycles. I wouldn’t say it was prone to damage from repeated plugging in and unplugging. In fact I would say it is more robust than the micro USB that lots of portable units use. However if you wanted to make it easier to connect / disconnect and didn’t need the positive locking you could use one of these adapters and leave the Molex permanently connected. www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/47042-teltonika-pr2pd01b/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwhIS0BhBqEiwADAUhc9VB9dzSYtmyne0h9bVG2bkmJWPmRCYFzE7wbVwCOfgt8rgoMS993RoCZqAQAvD_BwE

Thanks for the video! Would you be able to help with the following question? Do the antennae that come in the box help with 5G signal inside? I'm living in an area where it's more than twice as expensive to get broadband, but much cheaper to get 5G package. I get 5G signals when the windows are open, however during the summer months the apartment will have to be fully closed up, so no way to put an external antenna (no option to drill a hole through, too, because its a temporary accommodation). I'm hoping that the antennae that comes in the box can help with 5G signal when all the windows are closed up during summer! Watching the video, it sounds like the 4 antenna are only for LTE, not 5G?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Hi, this would depend on what device you are currently using for 5G and how good the Antennas are on that. The unit mounted antennas are for both 4G and 5G so are likely to be an improvement on the antennas in a mobile phone. (I'll do a quick comparison test over the weekend of our 5G phone Vs the RUTX50 in the van with just the internal antennas on and add a reply with my findings) However if you are using a 5G router with internal antennas, without comparing side by side, it would be difficult to tell, though I do expect the unit mounted antennas are likely to perform better than those inside a domestic 5G modem.

@@ExploreVanUK Thanks for getting back! I am currently using my iPhone; I didn’t want t splurge on a 5G router without testing if it even works! Unfortunately the return policies here aren’t that amazing. When the phone is near the window (closed) I have seen the phone show 5G. However sometimes it drops to 4G, and I’m not sure that’s just because of iPhone’s algorithm (already set it to prefer 5G), or that it’s lost the signal. Your experiment will be so, so useful to me - really looking forward to it!
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK Год назад
Hi I’ve completed the test with phone and Router (with on unit antennas) inside the van. The phone could only just get 1 of 5 bar 5G signal and had a download speed of 4.72 MBPS. The router had 2 of 3 bars signal and a download speed of 178 MBPS. So I would conclude the on unit antennas on the router are superior to the ones in the phone. Hope that helps!
@baineteo
@baineteo Год назад
@@ExploreVanUK Thank you so much for running the test! I've been doing further testing myself yesterday, and it seems like as long as the iPhone is connected to a power source, it's more likely to keep the 5G signal on. Speedtests ran slowly with the windows closed, but once they were open the speed went up from a few Mbps to 300-400 Mbps. With your testing I am fairly confident that internet speeds wouldn't be crawling with the RUTX50 indoors during summer! Thank you so much! :)

Hi, it will depend on the networks you are planning to use / Countries you are planning to visit for example USA and Canada use different frequencies to most of the rest of the world so the RUTX50 is not designed for that market. @ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 6 месяцев назад
Whilst technically correct and certainly something to bear in mind when using 5Ghz in a house across multiple rooms / floors with multiple surface penetrations. As the external WiFi antenna is literally on the external surface of the van and the signal only needs to pentetrate mm’s of metal and the insulation having the antennas inside or outside the van has no noticible performance difference to the WiFi in the van. However, having the WiFi antenna external has a significant benefit to the ability to pick up and use public WiFi hotspots around the area.

@@ernststag771 keep an eye out for our up coming video on the GL X3000 where we test this out and show there is no difference to the performance of the WiFi in the van. Afraid we’ve not tested the Chateau, so the choice would have to be yours. Unless you need really low latency and really high speeds for something like Gaming I doubt most people would even notice the difference. Starlink is far cheaper than you said now, works out far more viable and reliable than 5G. I speak from experience with both Starlink and a Teltonika router! Starlink is now £300 hardware (or £15pcm rental). And £85pcm for roaming. So £1020 per year. And from experience I’ve been in dozens of park ups where either no cellular service at al, or only 1-2Mbs at best. Starlink reliably works every time and everywhere at about 100-150Mbs on average. I “was” paying £100 a month on two unlimited cards (but often no signal) now only £85 on my Starlink and always 4k streaming 👍

Yeah good to see Starlink prices coming down. Though they do say the £300 is a limited time offer. We pay less than £20 a month for unlimited LTE so it is still a big difference. (£1020 a year rather than £240 excluding equipment) we have Freesat for TV so never a problem with that if we’ve got clear view of the sky and it’s free. We’re planning to try Starlink out during our Europe trip in summer so we’ll see how we find it and if the still significant extra cost is worth it for us. As with all the options it’s very much down to what you need, how you plan to use it and your budget as to what is a good choice.

Hi, it is Cat20 as I mention at 1:30 The RUTX14 which we review here is Cat12 2022 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vrIHwMsqi00.html

Just to balance things, I have a Teltonika RUTX11 and it's sitting on the table packed up ready to be returned for a refund. Very slow, very poor quality build, and didn't achieve speeds to beat my humble Huawei 535. Huge disappointment.

Hi thanks for sharing. It's worth noting this video is about the RUTX50 5G model not the RUTX11 which is only 4G LTE. What you have found is actually not too surprising. The RUTX11 has a Category 6 modem but your Huawei 535 is likely to be Category 7 so will aggregate more signals, so in a really simple scenario with multiple bands available it would be expected to be faster. However the Huawei isn’t as robust, doesn’t have twin Sims and Auto Failover. It can’t be used as a WiFi repeater or load balance the network between a mobile connection combined with a WiFi hotspot. It doesn’t have GPS, remote configuration, SMS control and alerts, digital inputs and outputs. However if you’re not going to need any of those the Huawei is a great choice, we talk about making them even better in this video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tRIIWwU8kCQ.html

Hi, the RUTX50 was only released in September 2022 so not sure how you could have been using it for 2 years? This certainly wasn’t our experience where there was suitable signal. I can only suggest resetting to factory settings checking you have the latest firmware. Ours worked great straight out of the box.

I find starlink questionable. There must soon be a regulation in various countries outside the US that forbids this service. I don't think this is a liable solution. The rocket launches also pose a severe CO2 pollution.

Hi, yes with a suitable external antenna it will allow connection to 5G towers from further away.

Simple answer. No. I have one that get's 25Mbit where my iPhone get's 125Mbit.

That’s interesting and hasn’t been our experience, what antenna are you using? And presume you have both on the same network? Have you look at what bands the RUTX50 is connecting to?

The RUTX50 is just a terrible router! I would say the router is still in Alpha mode not even Beta mode. Much better is getting a Zyxel outdoor 5 G router or even just getting an external antenna and using a normal TPlink Deco 5G router. The speed difference is about 100x or more!!! Also the ethernet port is 1G ... so even if you could get 3.3 G speeds it would not be through LAN. Very disappointing especially as I forked out a lot of money to buy 4 of these.

Hi can you share a few more details about what problems you have faced, so others can learn from it? Have you reached out to Teletonika? I have found them and their Crowd Source support forum extremely helpful in the past. Any issues we have faced have generally been down to user error rather than a problem with the kit. The Zyxel NR7102 is only single SIM so not really comparable, its antennas are directional, so not good for on the move and for mobile use it would have to keep being repositioned eachtime you moved. Personally I wouldn't want nearly £500 of kit outside where it could be stolen. The TP Link Deco only has a Single SIM too, is essentially a consumer Router so doesn't have the level of configuration of the Teltonika and only has 2x2 Mimo antenna connection which means it is not going to be able to maximise the band usage on the 4G+ or 5G networks when using an external antenna and the TS9 connectionss are very prone to damage and coming loose when on the move. For us the only real close competitor to the RUTX50 is the GLiNet GL-X3000 which you can see our review of here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-584LyEDFdiY.html

For many (including us) I’d agree, but I’m sure there are Gamers, Digital Nomads and Travelling families that would disagree. I’d also question why 5G phones are so popular if people didn’t utilise the speed. People have got used to the speed of fibre Broadband and 5G phones so many expect the same performance when they travel.

Surely RUTX14 is enough, it has 4x4 mimo. 5G signal is probably not going to be available in the remote areas anyway so the advantage of RUTX50 is nullified. Seems like overkill?
@ExploreVanUK
@ExploreVanUK 3 месяца назад
As you say really depends on where you plan to travel. If you are planning on always being away from towns / cities (or even many villages in the Uk now have 5G) then probably not worth it. I'd also say for most people 5G speeds are probably overkill with 4G+ being plenty. But I like to cover all bases for those that want more speed and that stay near civilisation, who would find it useful.
