I recently found this Sony TC-FX5C promising to be in really bad shape for ten bucks on popular online auction site. The seller said nothing works, and the door is broken. Can I do anything with it?

Prerecorded sounded great. This Sony has a nice viewing window for the cassettes as well.I wish I had your patience for repairs.

I own the FX3. I always loved the VU meter witch works great en accurate. Not easy to repair decks. An FX5 for sale here at the secondhand store for 75 euro. To expensive I think.

I had one of these brand new in the 1980s. Not sure what is wrong with this one cosmetically: The off color center faceplate. The black background along the volume slider track, off color Eject button: and WOW, a black colored box behind the aluminum faceplate. I get a feeling that this particular model was composed of two different decks. One that was actually black, and one that was silver. Also wondering where the yellow Dolby C button is? Thanks for the video.

BTW - Mine died after only about five years. I replaced it with a Nakamichi BX-100. Yeah, only a Dolby B type deck, but it was easy to modulate the play/record heads, and the pots inside were easily accessible to alter the bias and produce better recordings. The Sony... well maybe it was my newness to hi-tech stereo equipment, but my memory is that it was not as flexible in record or playback.

My BX-150 outrecords the Sony pretty easily. Unlike the Sony, it will saturate a metal tape and sounds like a three head machine doing it.

Thanks for the video. I was able to service the transport and replace the belts but one I got it back together, the play, stop, ff, rw, buttons became unresponsive. Do you have any insight on how to fix this. They were working before I took everything apart. Thank you so much!

If they're all non functional I'd look at the ground connection to the LED board, or some other issue with the wiring and connectors to that board. Maybe a bad solder joint. Schematics show the ground is on the four pin connector, which joins to CNJ507 on the control board. Has to be a connection issue if it worked before.

@@Oklawolf another thing to note is that the light behind the cassette tape is blacked out in the transport. I checked all the 4 pin connectors as well as solder joints and wasn’t able To find any loose connections. Do you know what else it could be? Thank you so much your videos are wonderful.

That lamp needs to be working, IIRC, or it will think there's no tape movement. A 6V lamp should work I think. Can't remember if it's T-1 size (3mm) or not, but the service manual says 5V 60mA.
