I'm sad about Otis Redding never having gotten to sing "To Love Somebody..." Can you imagine how spectacular that version would've been, with all his soul?!
The song the Gibb brothers wrote for Otis Redding was not "To Love Somebody," but the unreleased song "End of My Song." Which you can hear on RU-vid. Otis Redding died December 10th, 1967. The Bee Gees released their composition "To Love Somebody" in June 1967, so Redding was still very much alive. The Gibb brothers may have been inspired by Otis Redding or written "To Love Somebody"with him in mind, but a lot of the reason for heir successes was to write songs as if they were writing them for other artists. What would those songs sound like. So, the idea the Bee Gees wrote the song for Otis is an urband legend. Mostly false. It's possible Redding or his management may have approached the Gibb brothers and asked them to write a song for Otis, which was "End of My Song." Or they wrote a song for Otis and were going to offer it to him but died before he could hear it or record it. Unfortunately, the idea it was "To Love Somebody" has become so large in the story the brothers believed it was the song written for Otis. It's sort of like Dolly Parton believing Elvis wanted to record her song "I Will Always Love You." The Parton song Elvis wanted to record was "Coat of Many Colors," because it hit home. Parton's claim was disputed by everyone who worked for Elvis when it came to recording and knew which song it was he wanted to record. Most people today believe Elvis wanted to record "I Will Always Love You," but it too is an urban myth. Mostly spread by Parton but totally false.
@@Madrocker1954 Ha! No kidding? Cool--thank you for your thoughtful comment... I appreciate the background knowledge! :) I'm a musician so I like to have accuracy re: things like this; much appreciated!
Thanks for the video. Just a small correction. The Bee Gees wrote for Kenny Rogers, not Dolly Parton. He enlisted her on one of these songs - Islands In The Stream - for a duet. As history shows, this song then became the biggest ever selling country song.
@@Bruce15485 That's awesome, Bruce, i never knew that. Do you know if Vince tried to go for a Harrison vibe and the bassist went for a McCartney bass line?
@@WaitingForTheHook As I understand it, the Bee Gees were huge Beatles fans and admitted their early years were very Beatles influences, as I think most artists were at that time. I know Maurice Gibb played bass on most of their tracks. The help and influence of Vince Melourney and Colin Petersen can not be overstated. They were professional musicians some years before the Bee Gees became internationally famous. Have a read of these two items: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Melouney and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Petersen
"Bee gees came out in the 70s..that did it for me, I cried listening to their music. I knew every note every instrument" - Michael Jackson Video Idea: The Rutles 👍
Fun Fact: The early years of the Bee Gees (before they broke up for the first time, mentioned in the video) were as a five-piece band. They had a Guitarist and Drummer. The guitarist, Vince Melourney, even sang the only song on a Bee Gees record not sung by a Gibb.
The song "Such A Shame" was sung and written by Vince Melourney and appeared on the Bee Gees "Idea" album. A fantastic track. Also, the drummer Colin Petersen was a child film star in the 50' and 60's. Both Vince and Colin supported the Bee Gees in Australia musically before the Bee Gees became an international success ! The Bee Gees were never better when they were a 5 piece band in the late 60s.
it wasn't that long ago i found out they wrote Islands in the stream for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. never imagined them writing a country song, but it's great
They have other country songs in thier catalogue. They wrote 'Come on Over' that Olivia Newton John had a hit with, "Rest Your Love on Me" that was a hit for Conway Twitty. There are other country tunes they recorded themselves, too. Try "Lay it On Me," "Railroad" "Marley Purt Drive" for just a few :)
#11 Interesting fact: any Beatle fan should pick up their "Bee Gee's 1st" album. It's excellent. As Christian already beat me to it, "In My Own Time" sounds like a Beatle song - perhaps a Revolver outtake. "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" is fantastic. "Red Chair Fade Away," "1941 New York Mining Disaster," "Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy of the Arts" (stupid name, fantastic song), and "To Love Somebody" are the other highlights, for me.
"Bee Gees First" was my first Bee Gees album. One of the best psychedelic albums of all time ! However, their first 3 albums are fantastic. The Bee Gees were never better when they were a 5 piece band.
That was amazing. All you’re videos are. I’m not a bee gees fan but like them on the radio. Very interesting watch. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next episode
Btw Love the collaborative songwriting with Larry Gatlin and Barry Gibb on “Indian Summer”, the duet with Gatlin and Roy Orbison, with additional vocals by Steve and Rudy Gatlin and Barry Gibb. The video of them singing this song is so fun to watch!
I would maybe include country/folk amongst the list of genres--their early stuff esp. But it's like they feel almost 'genre-free' in my head? It's like they defy a category for me to lump them with... but in the good way :)
I miss them so much so young and people say time health all wounds but that not true it is and so long as i life i miss them and Barry make music do what you love to do Mine wish is to met you because i want to tell you that no brother he lost was angry with him Andy,Maurice and Robin they love you i hope it help you a lot of love from Adriana from the Netherlands🥰😘💞💕💕💕✍🙏🗣🎸🎤🔊🎶🎶
They created an incredible mood with their unique music. Words and Nights on Broadway are gorgeous. They were great musicians and composers as well as legendary singers. I thank them. At 6:29, Quinton Tarantino becomes inspired to make a film involving The Bee Gees.
That timeline is slightly off. Their last huge hits were on the album Spirits Having Flown which was their 1st album after Saturday Night Fever. Too Much Heaven, Tragedy, and Love You Inside Out all went to #1.
Also: how did I not know that RSO was Robert Stigwood's record label? I just think of him as the very open-minded producer of the Grease/Grease 2, Tommy, and Sgt. Pepper films--which of course had soundtracks all released on the RSO label, in hindsight... I guess it just takes me a 'little longer' to put things together... like, 30 years. :)
I think you said England but meant Miami. Oh well awesome video, me and my daughter violet love your videos and have learn much about our favourite band(S)!!!! Thank you love kris and violet
The thing you got wrong is the songs from the Saturday night fever album. They have always said that they had already written all those songs and told Robert he could have for the movie if he wanted them.
(This comment is not really relevant to this video) I recently bought a Sgt. Peppers vinyl used and in one of the sleeves was this strange piece of cardboard with cutouts on it. I tried to look up, what it was, but I count really find any satisfying answer. I think it would be great if you could make a video, explaining what it is and why they apparently stopped printing them.?:) Btw I adore your videos
So many mistakes here.... Say Maurice's name right, for goodness sake They were singing together before 1958 "The best new group of 1969"? What about all those hits from 1967 and 68?
Has there ever been another group with twins in the group? I don’t recall any. Also, don’t twins together possess a certain strength that is difficult to match?
Loved the.beatles. but.imy.oppenion.vant.hold.acandle to the.BeeGee they mad e.music.for the.world.hank youBeeGees. My all time. favorite band. God.gave them agift. Bless Maurice and Robin and.Andy your
ok but why does the anti disco hate movement photos look like the guy who killed john lennon, maybe its not him but the face def looks like him and the glasses
@@neilneilrebel There are about forty million WOMEN in this country but as far as I am aware there is only one LADY in Pinas. Her name is Imelda Marcos. :-) Magandang Araw!
The original 5 Bee Gees had 2 Australians in the band. Vince Melourney and Colin Petersen. Vince Melourney did sing lead vocals on one Bee Gees track, he also wrote the song ! "Such A Shame" on the Idea Album.
Born on the Isle of Man, moved to Manchester, England when the twins were about 5, and where Andy was born.. Then to Australia for about 9 years and then back to England again.
I have to correct you that the Bee Gees were three brothers. From 1966 to about 1970, they were actually with two additional members, Vince Maloney and Colin Peterson.
well that is only part of the story, really as a lifelong sixties obsessive I'm always peeved that ,people don't really appreciate their late 60's recordings.First and Horiozontal are fantastic album, brimfull with excellent songs and certainly as experimental as the Beatles at the same time.Idea from late 1968 sounds rushed and uninspired,no wonder the band had been on the road constantly for almost two years ,however 1969's ODESSA is a tremendous work, sadly aftyer that the Bee Gees seemed to be lacking in what made them so special,!971's Trafalgar apart from the Hit single How can you mend a broken heart(also covered by Al Green)is really a mediocre work.there are some good songs on the subsequent albums. Then of course came the 'reinvention' as disco act, which to me ios too much focussed on.yes it was their most successful period where they seemed to sell 1000 records every minute, but thank goodness, there were some good parodies on the disco era Bee Gees ,notably by Kenny Everett
Of all the '70s Disco mix cds that were made, why did you show one that said '80s Disco? Lol. With a picture of a girl in an obvious '70s afro. Disco was dead by 1980, except for a few straggler tunes here & there. So now the '80s enthusiasts are trying to give their decade the credit for Disco? I'm 60 years old and was there!
Look it's a good story, but Andy Gibb and the other band, the Bee Gees we're very washed up by the time they decided to jump Andy Gibb into the Bee Gees. Both of their fame was 10 years earlier. Also very Sad. rip Andy Gibb
