Ten Lies About Statins Our Doctors Tell Us

In this video I review 10 "assertions" I have been told or heard about statins over the years and why I reject each of these.
Quoted articles/studies/websites/etc.
Assertion 1: www.drugs.com/drug-class/hmg-...
Assertion 2: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
For assertion #2, note that "Shortness of Breath" is not specifically listed as an AE for Lipitor, though "unusual tiredness or weakness" and "fatigue" are. I would note that not all AEs from statins are known and doctors are reluctant to report potential AEs that are not already on such a list, thus suppressing many AEs from "making it." I have actually experienced a lot more of the symptoms that are listed as AEs, though to attribute them ALL to statins is probably not justified. After all, some symptoms really DO occur due to other causes. For example, heartburn: I doubt statins caused this for me. I'm sure it's eating too much chocolate. I had a bout of tachycardia for about a minute once. That was an isolated incident and seems to have been caused by my consume a highly-caffeinated product when I wasn't accustomed to such things.
Assertion 4:
Drugs.com defines "Rare" as 0.01% to 0.1% - i.e. 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 1,000;
Uncommon as 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 100.
Common as 1 in 100 to 1 in 10, though in one spot they inconsistently define "Very rare" as less than 0.1%
Assertion 5:
Paper on statins and brain research: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Report on BB permeability: www.researchgate.net/figure/S...
Note that "Lipophilic" = "fat loving"; "Hydrophilic" = "water loving" i.e. Fat Soluble and Water Soluble respectively.
Assertion 7:
FDA analysis of statins: www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety...
Assertion 8:
Ford Brewer RU-vid Video on statins and inflammation: • Statins & Inflammation...
Dr. Brewer is not the only Doctor who believes this.
Quick summary giving the 30-50% reduction figure: www.heartuk.org.uk/getting-tr...
Assertion 9:
Report on 50% compliance for statins: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Final Word: Dr. James Min is a former director of the Dalio Institute for Cardiovascular Imaging at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
His system for evaluating plaque is called "Cleerly": cleerlyhealth.com/

I was on statins for 6 months, experienced hair loss, increased blood sugar, and liver fat. All of these markers were fine before starting statins. My doctor said, 'oh it's not the statins'. Immediately after leaving that appointment I stopped taking them.

I was on a statin for 6 years and within 6 months was having enough issues that every doctors Appt I was telling my doctors about how crappy I was feeling (Especially severe all over muscle cramps, pain and increasing weakness)! I had no idea it was the statin, and every doctor I saw had "no idea" what I was talking about. Finally, 3 years ago I just stopped taking it and within a week I felt better. But after 3 years, although I no longer have the constant muscle cramps, I still have not regain the muscle strength I lost. BTW, I HAVE lost a lot of faith in doctors.

Sorry that was your experience. Like you, I had no idea it was the statin at first. People have told me "It's the Nocebo effect", but if that was the case (and I'm sure it is in some instances for some people) it certainly wouldn't have taken us years to realize the connection. Do you supplement with Ubiquinol CoQ10? I don't know if that will help, but it might.

I have a brother-in-law who has trouble getting around, knows it's statins, but won't get off them. "It's the cost of being healthy" is his attitude. I'm glad you were able to figure it out so soon. I almost think people who get the adverse effects quickly are luckier (if there's no permanent damage) because it's more obvious what the cause is.

This unfortunately is what happens when medicine goes from not for profit primarily pre Nixon to for profit post Nixon. We cant even come up with a vax for malaria today and yet we came up with all kinds of vaccines that prevent polio, MMR, small pox, etc. Statins are pure and simply a corrolation of something being at the scene being blamed for the crime. I said it before and it seems very rationally apparent to me cholesterol is the repair mechanism for damage to the cardio vascular system. Just like blood platelets are the repair mechanism for a cut on your arm. The scary part to me is its obvious the importance of cholesterol and its many functions in the body. Yet what about the potential damage that isnt apparent statins are doing to peoples bodies. That to me is a far more concerning correlation. The medical and science community is completely lost from a prevmed perspective. Its so obviously tied to metabolic dysfunction and yet they keep the fool cholesterol hypothesis alive. No other animal on the planet suffers from health related issues related to diet and yet we think its from eating what lions, tigers and orcas live off of primarily is the source of our disease. Yet there is no reasonable explanation why humans who are omnivores get diseased from eating animals when it has been our diet foundation since the dawn of time. Im not trying to start a specific diet debate i am an omnivore and i eat as such, im just making a point that the science supporting the cholesterol hypothesis is archaic and its obvious the majority of the medical community are like government, unwilling to unvest time in any real research of exactly how our arteries get damaged aside from the one glaring obvious answer high blood pressure in arteries puts additional stress on arteries but that isnt the only part of the equation. I obviously think its tied to abnormal high levels of average/fasting blood glucose but there are other things. Not only are diabetics at far higher odds for heart attack and stroke so are people with sickle cell for example. The blood platelets are shaped like a sharp pointed sickle that damage the lining of the vessels. Why arent we looking at things from this perspective instead of some corrolation to a critical component to our bodies like cholesterol. No way everyones livers can be wrong about cholesterol production.

A lot of RU-vid videos from Ken Berry, Sten Ekberg, Ford Brewer, Robert Cywes, etc. tackle the problem from this exact perspective: the biggest culprit is the Standard American Diet (SAD) and its high content of processed carbohydrates. Junk food really is killing us. And I remember the days when I thought "Gee, this Rice Krispy Square has no fat. It must be healthy!" I fear how much damage I did to myself as a sugar junkie all those years.

@@mystatinfreelife i just tell people quit all grain/seed based food and you will see an improvement. Im not fanatical i have a couple pints of heavy craft beer on occasion and a pastrami on rye but that is now a celebration rather than a foundation. You dont have to be an extremist but you do need to be rational. I think those of us who have consistently exercised the majority of our life in some form are at a huge advantage. My moms family all are contending with type 2 diabetes and yet she isnt at 83 because from her 30s she started going to aerobics 4 days a week. Its one of the main reason the animals are always healthy, they have to exercise or they die. Thats what we need, commercials during primetime. EXERCISE OR YOU WILL DIE A HORRIBLE PAINFUL DEATH 🤣

I am impressed by your capacity for and use of basic logic in your discussion and conclusions. It's much more convincing than most other videos on this subject. And yes, my Dr. prescribed statins for me because my CAC was 150. He insisted. I didn't take them anyway. I have, instead, been implementing lifestyle and especially dietary improvements instead. I'm 77 and in great shape. Normal weight and blood pressure. I don't think I'll ever be interested in statins.

Russ, what do you know about neurological effects?
@mystatinfreelife
@mystatinfreelife Год назад
I only really know what I experienced personally - and of course cognitive effects, at least, are very subjective. Also, I did have some neuropathy in my knees. It is less now that I am off statins but has not completely gone away. Mentally, I was making a lot of mistakes - some at work were safety issues, and I had similar mistakes around home and while driving. I felt I was in a fog, and was prone to bouts of temper and depression I understand that studies of lipophilic statins (such as Lipitor) are more prone to these things, whereas hydrophilic statins (such as Crestor) are less so. Our brains are heavy users of cholesterol for its normal function and the lipophilic statins are known to cross the so-called "Brain Blood Barrier" despite claims by many to the contrary.

I personally have improved lipid quality through diet and exercise. I don't worry as much about high numbers... the definition of high keeps changing and what is high for one person may be okay for another. If a person truly does have abnormally high cholesterol such as from Familial Hypercholesterolemia there are several alternatives their doctor can recommend such as bempedoic acid, ezetimibe etc.

After we moved and my wife went to a new doctor he freaked out at the meds my wife was taking for her condition and took her off it immediately, which pretty much fixed the immediate quality of life problem (the underlying condition still existed.)
