Ten Years After - Studio rehearsal in Germany, 1969

Here's Ten Years After (Alvin Lee-guitar/vocals, Leo Lyons-bass, Rick Lee-drums, Chick Churchill-organ) doing a rehearsal in the studio in Germany, 1969.
They start off with "I can't keep from crying", then go into a blues tune "Woke up this morning" and after a break do "Woke up this morning" take 2. Finally Alvin plays a little to himself.
Remember Animal? Drummer with the muppets? Well, check out Leo Lyons here on bass.
The rest of the band is rather relaxed, laid back.
This was filmed by Wim Wenders, I don't own the material.

I saw TYA about a year after they played Woodstock, was really impressed by his playing...here I am knocked out by his Wes Montogomery style octave solos- got to say he was ahead of his time in the rock genre for sure. NEVER saw him play anything other than his ES 335, interesting to hear him play a Strat!

I was into Jeff Beck, Hendrix and all that. I never had anyone turn me on to Ten Years After. I saw the Woodstock footage, but it wasn't the progressive blues like they play here. They took it to another level. He's not a real great vibrato player but he was playing really interesting stuff.

Sure you are. What's he doing, playing 16th notes and jerking around like Eyegor the hunchback? And sure Alvin Lee had talent, but tbh it was plain even in the late 60's that he had a couple of licks that'd show up in every song and that got old after awhile. Fast isn't necessarily good, it's just fast.

@@MGDCrown559 I'm not a musician. What do I care whether or not somebody's more or less talented than me? We all listened to TYA when the first two albums came out, but man, after a while you couldn't miss the stuck-in-a-rut repetition so the albums eventually got passed on. Gotta admit it's funny to see a 50+ year old man wearing leather pants and playing guitar, though. And maybe Leo Lyons was playing 32nd notes, I don't know, but it's only impressive to watch, IMO, for a few years during adolescence and then tastes change. Sounds like you've got a powerful crush on those guys, hmm? To each his own, I say.

from the Alvin Lee official instagram: “Ten Years After was called a 'Underground Movement'. It was the time when we could get on stage and play in street clothes, like jeans and t-shirts. You didn't have to bow and do the show-biz kind of thing. It was pure, one hundred percent music. That was what it was all about. It was about the playing, and of course the extended solos, and the ten minute songs. It might've been self indulgent, but it was a very healthy situation for a band to be able to play just the way they wanted to play. I think that attitude is, what is interesting people today. When Alvin Lee was in Phoenix we heard what sounded to us a tight band until Ten Years After followed. I've seen the Doors, Hendrix, Janus etc. But Lee and the band were the tightest I ever heard. RM

Busts a string around the 16 minutes area, re-tunes the rest and just keeps on going. Amazing guitarist and band. Saw them live in Edinburgh on the same bill as Jethro Tull as substitutes for Stevie Winwood and Traffic - Stevie was "ill". A memorable night.

Listen to the solo and all the influence he gave out to other legends . Alvin pioneered the entire sound . The solo riffing and lines are incredible . The story he is telling ! Definitely the greatest blues guitar rock ever .

@dandettmann595
@dandettmann595 Год назад
@@JohnSmith-ww2pi The first time I ever saw Eddie play was at the bowling alley in Duarte, California...10 miles from where they lived. Eddie was using an ES-335 that night. Me & my brother walked up and talked to Eddie who stayed by his equipment during their break. I don't think we asked Ediie about Alvin Lee, what he thought about him, then, at that time...but I wished we would have. Alvin had to be one of guitarist influences on him...that's just a given. Ed didn't play any Alvin Lee/TYA songs that night. He/they did do La Grange (ZZ Top) and Nobody's Fault But Mine by Zepplin. And Runnin With the Devil, which Roth mentioned was an original. Roth also said they had just learned a new one...Nobody's Fault But Mine, before they played that cover tune. One of my brother's friends told him they saw Ed play, I'm Going Home at a gig somewhere. It's too bad he never mentioned Alvin...but that's just the way he was. About the only guitarist he ever mentioned was Clapton.
@dandettmann595
@dandettmann595 Год назад
@@JohnSmith-ww2pi So ya...Eddie wasn't the first to tap...just the first to perfect it and record the mind blowing/guitar world altering Eruption. I think Ed was the greatest...but I'd rather listen to Alvin or Michael Schenker play.
