When I listen to songs like The Rain Song and Ten Years Gone it makes me wonder how these complex compositions came to Jimmy's head in the first place. Great version. You nailed the solo
Good thought… many musicians have told that they imagine a place first, then the mood and the feeling….if you are in the right place mentally then it would flow….the rest is matter of details . Refinement….David Gilmore described Shine on you crazy diamond…. While doing sound check etc he randomly played those magical 3 notes….. and others said wait…play that again….and the whole composition was built around that …and the whole album around that…then came the lyrics….the concept…. Necessity is the mother of Invention……but Serendipity is often the mother of creation….the great muse mother likes random sex with Time and Chance…often at the same time….enjoy.
So utterly amazing, sometimes mind blowing, the amount of musical creation and composition that came from that era. Long story short, I don`t think we will ever see that quality of rock and progressive rock ever again. As the music scene technically advanced, the necessity of creation and imagination decreased. So blessed to have lived in that musical era. @@neoaureus
First time in my life I've ever wished I had a Telecaster instead of a Strat. Thanks for this man! This song means a lot to me right now and I'm really grateful you did this video so I can soak in Jimmy's work.
Hi Howard! Your lessons are life changing! You're helping me so much as I'm rediscovering what I thought were long lost skills. Such a joyful thing! Your lessons are super amazing! Do you have a video or Tab for the chord section that plays behind the solo? Thank you again, so, so much! Jimmy is my spirit animal.
You're a Godsend. I had a Zep songbook when I was first learning and it was just wrong. Almost as if they had transcribed the wrong band. Your vids are so helpful.
Thanks and good lesson.. I have been trying to figure out the part between the lyrics to the chorus and you made it clear!! And a great song...and your right .many parts that's why I love to play zep.!!
“ Excellent lesson. No biggie but not sure that is called an F6 with that open e first string included? More likely a Dm9 , as d-a-f constitutes a Dm, with an added e note being the 9th degree from D in the ‘Circle of Fifths’.
Great job, especially liked the tone. Are you using pedals for the effects and turning them on and off with foot pedals or did you add it during post production with your DAW? If your using pedals, which ones and what amp? Thanks great job.
For this video, the Tele was recorded DI into the board. The signal was split - and I actually used an old DigiTech processor for the phasing and distortion. It's the only thing I could find to get this particular sound! I think I applied a pinch of chorusing to the clean channel as well. Thanx so much for checking it out :-)
Thankyou Howard - I am slowley learning this difficult song -from your video --its in my head 24 /7 ! -but my question is ----is there a difference between a PHASE SHIFTER ---and a PITCH SHIFTER ?==or are they one and the same FX sound -??---ie at the final solo on Ten yrs gone ---Page uses a weird double octave FX --HOW DO I GET A SIMILAR SOUND ?---Iam afraid I do not know much of Robin Trower ---ONLY Hendrix SRV Page etc !---===
1:23. Howard I respect your playing and have learned a ton from you. I've been playing this song for decades and I'm always checking my work on various songs on YT. Besides I like hearing other players tackle great songs. I would modify your lead in the "Loop" at the timestamp I opened this comment with. The three notes on the D string *I* play as 0-3-2, or D-F-E, followed by the open-A like you do. Give it a whirl. It works both ways but I'm certain that's how Jimmy does it. I've always played it this way and tried to watch some live Zep and Black Crowes covers of it. See what you think. See if it's accurate to your ears relative to the orig. Thanks again. (Also - Ever notice how the double stops leading into the solo were loosely based on Band on the Run? BotR was 1973 and TYG was 1974. Jimmy always had his ear to his contemporary's playing)
Actually... over the years I've always played it with the open D string, which rings true with the recording. But I spotted a Page & Plant live performance years ago, and he played it 2-3-2... I kinda liked it, so I included in the video. There are so many online showing it the other way. But with Page - his live "renditions" could be very different lol! Thanks for watching, and thanks for your input - much appreciated :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart I have been playing guitar 2+ years now (played drums for 30 years) and am now starting to tackle soloing. Have spent the time up till now learning the fretboard and theory. Amazing instrument. I wish I had been playing guitar all these years. I just bought a Tele! I have a jazz guitar teacher( don’t really play jazz but he is the best in the area and it is definitely expanding my knowledge) and have watched a ton of videos but I have not come across any like yours. So concise and clear and to the point with really fine playing. I will be buying your classes and supporting. Thanks again!
