Tenet (2020) - Spoiler-Free Review

Christopher Nolan's newest film, Tenet, has finally come to theaters. Blending a mind-bending time element with a traditional spy film, Tenet continues Nolan's mission to push the envelope on what we expect from a movie. Does the ambition of Tenet come together in another instant classic or is it too convoluted for it's own good?

It has been rumored that some of the dialogue being inaudible is due to Christopher Nolan’s expanding brain, which could no longer be entirely contained by his cranium, leaking onto and damaging the dialogue audio files.

Yeah, I hate the fact that people think that if you don't like movies like Midsommar, Hereditary, or any big complicated film that you are an idiot, but if you do like the films then you are just getting into the hype or you are just a fanboy. NONE OF THAT SHOULD MATTER! We should just watch awesome movies and be movie fans!

Extremely amazing intro Bro, everyone has been doing the reverse sync but yours is the freshest take on it. I think Nolan seems to purposely makes movies that are hard to review because you don't know what is going onscreen and it requires multiple viewings.

Yo, Cody! I just saw it today, too. And no joke, beat for fucking beat, everything you said in your review, whether it be positive or negative, I thought the exact same things on my way out of the theater as well! I think I over hyped it for myself and was a bit unsatisfied, but I don't think it discouraged me enough from never watching it again, I cannot wait till I can see this movie again so I can hopefully get a much better grasp on the story and what Nolan was trying to convey here. Being as big of a Nolan fan as I am, I can already say that when this releases on 4k, I'll be at my nearest best buy ready to pick it up instantly! It may not be favorite, or even one of my secondary choices of Nolan, but I still am grateful I got to see it in the theaters at all. So all in all, I'm glad I did see it, and no matter what, whenever the next Christopher Nolan movie comes out, you will see my butt in the theaters, completely hyped up and excited, cuz he never disappoints!

I would like to watch it again to see if I like it more, but man was I exhausted at the end. For a movie that is two and a half hour, the dialogue and exposition is on speed. It is pretty complicated, and some times you ask why, its basically a thinking mans terminator! I did enjoy it though, visually it is striking, the score is awesome, some of the ideas are really cool. 7.5/10. Great review like always!!

I saw Tenet at a drive-in movie theater. It was a double feature with New Mutants first and then Tenet. Most normal movie theaters were still closed, so it was my only option. I love movies, but I had never been more miserable at a movie-going experience than that night. On the other hand it sure was memorable! Although I'm not sure if I'll ever revisit Tenet to truly give it a fair chance. Love all your insights. Very fair. Very constructive.

Great review Cody, as always a in depth honest no bullshit review I agree with some of your points but I'm just glad to watch something original which ain't a comic book movie, remake or reboot. I do think the plot a little convoluted & not as accessible as Inception but this was still a great movie which I do believe audiences will enjoy more from multiple viewings. Love the opening, to quote a line from JCVD Double Impact "there's two of them". Double the Van Leach.

Finally caught up to this one; if I could sum this up in one sentence it would be “Christopher Nolan does a Bond movie.” The overall style could easily be mistaken for a Bond or Bourne or other kind of modern spy/geopolitical action thriller, especially in the way it looks. The concept of inversion, the runtime and the relative lack of humor clearly mark this as a Nolan picture. Certainly the main character had the least amount of personality of all the main players in the movie, but that tends to be typical of these kinds of films, where it’s the villains and their plots, as well as the locations, ideas & action set-pieces that are the main attractions; as you say, normally Nolan has more interesting protagonists. I’d put it to the script rather than Washington, who did very well in BlacKkKlansman. Agree with you on liking complicated films that might need to be seen multiple times to figure out; the opening scene certainly set the tone for this, as we’re just thrown into a big action sequence without knowing who people are or why they’re doing what they’re doing. I didn’t mind that, as I was sure that we’d eventually find out. Unfortunately, in spite of all the exposition things weren’t a great deal clearer, mostly because such a large amount of the explanations came in the second half of the film, by which time I just didn’t care enough by that point to follow it as closely as I needed to. For all my criticisms of Inception, one thing that it did right was to drop most of its explanations in the opening act; once the audience hoists that in, then there’s no problem keeping up with the rest of the film. In this film, though, we get only a brief explanation of inversion - with the expository character essentially saying to Washington, “You don’t really need to understand this too deeply - just know that it exists” - but it’s then followed, an hour or so later, by more explanation & exposition in order to set up the big action-filled final act, which begins almost immediately afterwards! Overall, in terms of pacing & structure, this movie was almost an inversion of The Dark Knight: its pace was fairly slow, expository and theme-laying-out for most of its runtime, with a sudden pick-up in speed (as well as plot developments and twists) very late in the film. Taking some pruning shears to the first 90-100 minutes, while maybe letting the last act breathe a little more, might have helped. (Come to think of it, I had a very similar reaction to Ari Aster’s Hereditary!) Maybe seeing this film a second time will see it improve for me, but - like you - I’m not really in a rush to do that, though I’m sure I will one day. As of now, though, I’d put this near - though not at - the bottom of Nolan’s filmography. Some interesting stuff here, but still a disappointment.

Haven’t seen TENET yet but I have seen Dark Knight Rises in IMAX and Interstellar AND Dunkirk in an IMAX DOLBY ATMOS theater. I thought the sound mix was perfect and no hard of hearing scenes. Did you see it in a recently built IMAX theater because some people are saying they had no problem hearing in IMAX but couldn’t hear the dialogue in a standard theater.

I felt almost the exact same as far as negatives( although i was pumped during the action scenes and Robert Pattinson was my favorite character). The only thing I'd add, and this is just kind of a personal nitpick, is I thought that the way Michael Caine talked kind of showed his age. He sounded so tired and its heartbreaking for me to have to say that because Michael Caine is one of those actors that inspired me to pursue my passion for musical theater. Kind of makes me feel old now haha

Love your insight on things Cody👌🏾 It makes me think lol. Surprisingly, your review on Tenet sounds a lot like how I felt about several Christopher Nolan films such as Inception, Prestige, and the Batman movies. He is so laser focused on a PLOT DRIVEN story that the lack of character development always seems to be the reason why I don't care for some of his films. I, however, loved Intersteller. It was a beautifully told story and not that I hated his other films like Inception or Prestige, it's just I don't connect with the characters & get disinterested in the overall story. I feel similar about his Batman movies although Christian Bale's acting is on point, he was a very robotic Batman to me. Very gloomy, dull, and uninteresting character development but that's just my opinion lol😅

I did see this about a week ago and... yeah, it was confusing as fuck for me and I really did try to keep up with it. Visuals and inversion scenes are cool and interesting, but try keeping up with the film 100%, I guarantee you’ll fail. Definitely one that NEEDS rewatching, but I’m not sure I’m as interested in watching this one. Also, I wasn’t sure if it was just my cinema, but during action scenes, the audio was really loud, starting to border on painful.

The first time i saw this movie, I couldn't even talk about how I felt about it because I had zero idea what I had just seen. I just got home from a second viewing and I can say after a second time, I was able to follow it a lot better. There were still things I didn't understand at all, but most of what I didn't understand on the first viewing, I got a lot clearer understanding of the second time. But as far as my thoughts on the film, I agree with almost every single thing you said! I do suggest going to see it again because going in with some preknown information about the film after the first time, it'll help you understand more in the second viewing.

Agreed, I saw it last night and after the hour mark I was on board even though I still didn't understand what was happening 100%. I wish that movie theatres had a subtitle option for movies because I would go watch it again in theatres ASAP if that was the case. As it stands though I will probably have to wait till it comes to bluray or streaming to fully get all the dialogue that I missed and fully judge whether the plot was as convoluted if you could actually hear or see what the characters were saying.

This review verbalized my thoughts and feelings about this movie....down to the points that I had trouble understanding what the heck people were saying...unless that was intentional in order to disorient the audience to draw us into the film...the world of Tenet...and the point about trying to figure out what the heck was going on literally for at least a hour. The 2nd half saved the movie for me because the 1st half scared me....I was really feeling like Oh nooo is this going to be the 1st Nolan film I don't like....but the 2nd half stopped that. I definitely will need more time to process the experience.

Nolan has odd ideas for audio in his movies. Maybe it’s his idea of manipulating the audience to feel anxious and on edge during an important scene of dialogue if they can’t hear it well, but it seems like it’s backfiring and annoying everyone. One things for sure, it’s not a mistake, he’s clearly mixing the audio like that intentionally for whatever reason.

Good review, Cody, couldn't agree more. I love Nolan but fuck, I got lost on the opera scene, from there I just relaxed and enjoyed the visuals which, truth be told, were unwittingly funny at times (they reminded me of the red room in twin peaks). I like complicated plots but, god damn, I just could not understand a thing and I don't even have the sound mix excuse 'cause, here in Barcelona, I saw it with subs. And I really hate when a character gives you that "don't try to understand it, just feel it" crap. I can buy it in a movie like Inland empire which from the start you know it won't make much sense but, here, in a spy thriller scifi film... I for sure will watch it again when it becomes available in bluray but, as for now, very disappointed.

I checked out 30 mins into the movie and had to sit through 2 more hours of slow pace, confusion, shitty sound editing and muffled dialogue. Guess I shouldn't have gone in with such high expectations. The point ppl make that you'll have to watch it a couple of times to get/enjoy the movie like Inception is moot cause I thoroughly enjoyed and understood what was happening in Inception the first time around. I loved inception btw 😎

Funny intro👌 Man was this movie fuckin confusing. Holy shit dude, great visuals but for me that's it. I whole heartedly didn't understand it at all. There's time travel....i got that😞

I know you have only seen it once but would you say that this is your least favorite Christopher Nolan film so far?

Based off first impressions.

No I would still put it above Following (which is just a default least awesome Nolan) and Dunkirk.

IMO its a very basic plot we've seen done before just with headache inducing effects. Seriously the "rewind" effects in this completely took me out of the movie because of how rediculous they were and I now have a headache because of them. GG Nolan.

Dear f***ing God, this sounds awful. Wish he could just do another low-scale film like Memento that required you to pay attention the whole time and that was it.

This sounds complicated as fuck. Hell it took me 3 times each to understand Inception and Interstellar so this might take me more viewings. And I was lost as fuck when the video started I couldn't understand what the hell was going on until the present time you came in the picture lol. And i forgot to comment it in the Inception video but the skit at the beginning of the Inception video was funny as hell i couldn't stop laughing man.

OK let's say the story, (even though we don't entirely understand it) is great, genius, whatever. But details in terms of being able to hear peoples voices and give enough information to the viewer so it's easy to jump on. Its really NOT that good and lacking. I watched there at a drive-in cinema. A part of me likes the convoluted and complex storyline. But when watching it on bluray multiple times it's just not that good

Canada got it first which is a rare for us. Visually stunning but may be the most pretentious storyline of Nolan's career. 7 overall. But only 1 watch under my belt so who knows.
