RETROSPECTIVE | Tengai Makyou ZIRIA is the first chapter in a long-running series of Japanese role-playing games that started on the PC Engine. It was developed by Hudson Soft and RED Company (now Red Entertainment). Tengai Makyou/Far East of Eden is one of the great JRPG series of the 1990s, one which was sadly left in Japan for the most part. The first title, ZIRIA, has an important place in the history of JRPGs, RPGs and gaming in general as it was the very first RPG developed for and published on a CD-ROM disc. It was the first RPG to explore the new possibilities that CDs opened up to gaming, including CD-quality music and voicework, anime-style cinematics and a huge amount of memory to work with.
This is the Tengai Makyou/Far East of Eden Retrospective Part 1: ZIRIA, all about the world's first RPG published on CD, one that you might have never played. One part documentary, one part review, this video explores how Hudson Soft and RED Company came together to make this legendary role-playing title for the PC Engine CD-ROM ROM System, its challenging development, the gameplay and story as well as the legacy of this game, the first entry in the Far East of Eden series.
In short, this groundbreaking title, released in 1989, paved the way for the more cinematic style of RPG that would rise to popularity in the 1990s by including voice acting and animated cutscenes unlike anything before it.
A special feature of this video is the inclusion of interview segments with Mr. Yoshiteru “Torajirou” Tsujino, series artist of Tengai Makyou and key member of the game's creative team at RED. He was gracious enough to allow me to speak with him and film an interview in 2022, providing his insight into the creation and development of ZIRIA back in the 1980s. His participation with this video was an integral part of why it was made, so I am extremely grateful for his time and input, and of course his work on the Tengai Makyou series.
Interview with Mr. Tsujino: • Yoshiteru "Torajirou" ...

Special thanks also goes out to John the Happy Console Gamer for voicing an excerpt from an interview with Mr. Teruhisa Hiroi, more commonly known as Hiroi Ouji. A lifelong fan of the Tengai Makyou series, it was John who got me to finally talk about the games in video form in 2021, as well as pushed me into contacting Mr. Tsujino, so his involvement was also a key factor in the creation of this video.

What a great work you did on this video dear buddy Jimmy!! So glad it pays off even more after de MOST IMPORTANT TRANSLATION OF THE DECADE! Neddles to say that it was my most anticipated translation. And it came as such a great surprise for me! Torajirou Tsujino ( the nice gentleman you did a great and so inspiring interview with) is even to this day. My favorite artist off all-time! I can assure to all of you folks out there. That the translation is ON POINT! I beat Khamen Khamen just about now and the dialogues are very captivating. Tsunade is such a charismatic partner. So many times she jumps out in the screen to adds even more narrative flavor and character development to the well flashed out story. Playing the game blind I can assure you that the programmer's of this fantastic endeavour work a lot to guarantee the best pacing you can find in those years. So underrated despite being so ahead of its time! Run button, bank system (which helps a LOT believe me), very affordable items to cure MP, very inteligent minigames, KOGAMAS WARP ABILITY!!!, the game's natural pacing is made in such a way that it is hard to run out your money. I always have the resources to buy whichever equipment that I want. Grinding for levels is just part to the course. But only in the beginning. If you face every enemy encounter ( which is VERY HIGH) Rarely You will have the need to stop to grinding for levels . In 89 this game was an work of art and it is still to this day. It is very story driven. And you will face the hurdles that the game provides just see the interesting events to come. Thanks to everyone responsible for this translation and also to you Jimmy who is alongside Jhony Millennium the biggest advocate to this amazing series! I'd be glad if you could authorize me to use some footage to make a review in Portuguese after beating this masterpiece ( which I do not think will you take to long as I am devouring this game kkkk)

@@yadigzzyeah, as a person who wants to see the history of JRPGs, it’s unfortunate that whole systems are ignored to be translated like the PC Engine. Even me personally. I hadn’t heard about the Turbo-Graphix 16 until Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. At least the Super Famicom RPGs that are worth playing are almost finished, except for ironically Shin Momotaro Densetsu, which is an entry in a big franchise. so maybe people will start doing PC Engine or Genesis RPGs. But knowing them they’ll do PS1 RPGs that no one cares about first.

Your usual quality of video is always great, giving a lot of context to the impact a game had on Japanese pop culture at the time, but getting interviews with Mr Tsujino and having Happy Console Gamer read out other quotes is really above-and-beyond! What a bizarre statement. The "genesis of RPGs" is in the West, not Japan. Furthermore by 1989 both the overarching RPG genre and the JRPG subgenre had been firmly established, Tengai Makyou has nothing to do with the origins of the genre and it's only real significance is the novelty of being the first Dragon Quest clone to be made on CD-rom.
@trenthoward6800
@trenthoward6800 10 месяцев назад
Firstly no, RPGs began in Japan. The ultimas, wizardry, and the black onyx are all terrible games that have rightfully been forgotten in all contexts save for being the garbage that Yuji Horii improved upon to make the first real RPG, hence the continued success of Dragon Quest where the three aforementioned series are dead and forgotten.

@@trenthoward6800that is factually false. Wizardry was one of the most popular RPGs in Japan. Not to mention that all JRPGs from the 80s take so much from Ultima 3. Also Ultima 4 and Ultima 7 are the blueprint for western RPGs which weren’t at all inspired by Dragon Quest.

@@thomasffrench3639 I find it both funny and sad how you creatures crawl out of the woodwork whenever someone with good taste rightfully chucks ancient crpgs into the trash. Listen, I can only imagine how much it must suck to carry a torch for a dead franchise, but wizardry died the very moment that Dragon Quest was created, never sold as many copies as Dragon Quest, and as for ultima 3 that game has more in common with a a strategy game than a real rpg. Just admit you're a racist who hates Japanese people.

.... I truly do not understand why they don't allow ppl to buy all of these old games that they used to have available for systems such as the PSP and PS3 via the digital storefront. Would it really be THAT hard to develop Emulators to run these games on the PS5? It would be amazing if we had access to these back catalogs, & it's a real shame that we don't. Retro content is now more scarce than ever which is just downright strange to me. It felt like they were headed in the right direction with it in previous console generations, but it's only gotten worse, with far fewer old selections to purchase now.
