Pretty straight forward, those that already fly fish will pick it up pretty easy. What I will enjoy about this new rod will be another tool in my bag to use but in a lightweight package.

I like the thumb cast after a while, as its easier on my wrist. Thanks for the great video, tight lines.

I extend my pointer finger and have my hand low on the cork. When I do this it seems to help my accuracy.

Ya its all about figuring out what works for you. And obviously it might change with different rod lengths, line lengths, flies, where you are fishing, etc.

I’ve owned a Tenkara rod for years. I’ve caught fish with it, but I’ve NEVER been able to cast well, unless the wind is at my back. The line usually just spools up 10 feet in front of me.

What kind of line are you using? And what length? And on what rod?

Use heavy flies and you will cast like a dream.

You guys missed a major part of the instruction. What happens in between when he has his line nicely wound on his line holder and when his line is already casting? How do you avoid snags and tangles -- snags on grass and bushes; tangles when the line or hook catches or knots? This guy is in the water. I assume he just let his line float with the current until it stretched out. That's not where I'll be.

Great points Steve. We will work on a more comprehensive video!

Thank you for share. I have a question , there Is difference of casting of we use furled leader , level line or a tapered leader?
@tenkararodco

The weight of lines, memory, and floatability are the main differences. Furled lines are lightweight, and can float when floatant is applied. They also have no memory. Level lines are great for nymphs and tenkara lines. They are also very lightweight, and have memory. Our crossbreed line is more like a floating fly line, it has less memory than level line, floats extremely well, and is heavier. Hope that helps!

Don't backcast BEHIND you (it ain't a flyrod) ..... just go up on backcast ..... basic cast is from about 1 o'clock on back to about 2:30 forward..... less work you do, the better it works.... yup

This video is terrible as an instruction video. I say this in hopes that any future instruction videos might improve and give more and better detail. I base my rating upon several factors. First, anyone who is going to watch this video are wanting to to actually learn and are people just starting out with tenkara and have little or no experience at all or who have never fly fished or who have fly fishing experiences but not using a tenkara rod or people who are returning to tenkara after a lengthy break and are looking for a refresher. Of there are all sorts of other people who may drop by, but these are the people this kind of is directed at I assume. I am in the 2nd group of people. While explaining that there are many different ways of casting it is always best to stick with one foundational method, regarding things like grip, back cast, stop, follow through etc. And that is my first problem with this video. Going through all the different types of grips just creates confusion for the new and beginning tenkara user and that creates frustration. My next problem is the lack of detail and specifics. While casting a tenkara rob is much easier than a fly rod but shares many of the same basic movements, their are differences, which this video fails to even address. Casting a tenkara rod is far more, lets say finesse or gentler than a fly rob or a spinning rob. Going from fly fishing and using a spinning rob to Tenkara was something that I had to get use to. Everything about casting a tenkara rod versus a fly rod is gentler. You aren't having to move yards of fly line off the surface of the water, the stop on the backcast is eariler than a fly rod (at 12 o'clock) versus 11 or 10 o'clock with a fly line, because the amount of energy needed to move the lines is much much less with Tenkara. The stop on the forward cast is about the same but gentler and shorter than a fly rod. You don't have to wait as long for the line to straighten out in front, so your follow through happens much sooner, in fact when watching a really good Tenkara caster it can be hard to distinguish between the stop and the follow through. This is another area that fly rod fishermen need to get use to. If you wait to long before your follow throughwith a Tenkara rod the line will completely straighten out and snap back towards you reducing your casting lenght by half. And one the things that was pounded into me when learning to cast with a fly rod was to keep my wrists out of the casting process. In other words no wrist action (at least until I was pretty good at casting and even then only slight wrist action as nothing will kill your fly rod casting quicker than too much wrist action) but in casting a Tenkara rod some wrist action is actually preferred which gives you the added finesse needed, which is one of the things that makes casting a Tenkara rod easier and quicker to learn. But none of these aspects are mentioned. Not the back cast, the stop at 12, the forward cast and stop at 2 or the gollow through. This is the 2nd video I have watched today from Tenkara Rod Co., the other being the Bow & Arrow cast, which I also found lacking in detail. Which was surprising since this casting technique can be quite dangerous if when done incorrectly. I expected more from Tenkara Rod Co. Here is to hoping that future videos improve and Tenkara continues to grow.

Thanks for your feedback! This is an older video and admittedly we haven't done a great job with our how to videos. Our main focus with creating content has been to show people how much fun Tenkara fishing is and to inspire people to adopt this method of fishing. That being said, we have a more comprehensive how to video coming out in the next few weeks that will cover basically everything start to finish. Thanks again!
