Cool video. This one is much more lax than the California Heritage Trout challenge where you have to actually catch each of the 12 fish in their native drainages. The Eagle Lake Rainbow is only qualifiable in Eagle lake for that challenge. Much of the other fish also have very small areas or single sections of creeks that qualify.
Thankyou-one of the top 3-4 videos I have seen on casting. Well presented. I am curious about the final technique for the cross breed line. You appeared to cast that line much further than I can-it looks like you were using the sawtooth-so you have at least 2 ft on my rod, it looks like you maybe had 18 ft of line -or was it more? Were using a bead head-or small streamer? I saw a small splash that looked like there was a little weight to the fly. How does the crossbreed line compare to a “PVC” line?
You said casting a fly. You're not casting a fly but lobbing them. In my experience in curiously trying out just the fly because of the front facing hackle, I found out that at least where I trout fish in the Ozark's, trout hammer them. in the lower currents where they like to feed. Now, I have over 700 flys...(experience). So, after that experience I bout about 50 different type of Tenkara flies. The Black Shinpuru this week I caught 5-trout 13-16" , 2 hours on that one fly alone using Tight Line Euro Nymphing with my 22' built leader ,10'.5" Moonshine Epiphany with Redington Tilt. That is a very well balanced combination using all 3-one once weights. But, since I have 19 fly rods...(experience), 3wt-8wt...(experience) and use all of them regularly bass, bluegill and trout, (I'm retired and that's pretty much all I do) I find that traditional fly fishing is real fly casting fishing and there is way more skill involved with the equipment and technique. Than Tenkara and Euro lobbing a fly fishing. I do a lot of French Euro Nymphing and found it to be tediously boring but though slightly MORE PRODUCTIVE because the drag a fly line creates, yet, the main emphasis is catching trout since what else does those 2 types of lobbing a fly can do. Sort of like hunting deer with a bow rather than a rife which I've done much of both too. There isn't anything special thinking that Euro Nymphing and Tenkra is big deal. It's a lazy mans type of fishing that you think your in the category of traditional FF. So, stop griping about what we think and calling us snobs. Then you're going to get a reaction. Just do what you do and keep you mind on that rather than what we are all supposedly thinking when most are not. Right!! Who is saying we can't get along???
Even though I've been tenkara fishing for 2 years now, I'm glad to have watched this video again as I am in nagano prefecture and am looking to catch some brown trout on my Japan - made 3.3m tenkara rod!
What kind of rod are you using? I’ve been fly fishing for awhile now and just discover the tenkara rods. I’m interested in a good back packing rod that will do possibly the equivalent to a 2-3wt fly rod
Typically I take a Beartooth rod and a Sawtooth rod backpacking. The Beartooth collapses down to 14 inches and extends to 10 ft. so that is what I use fishing creeks. The Sawtooth extends to 12 ft. and that would be the rod I use for lakes. Although you can definitely just take one and either of those would replace any traditional fly fishing rod 5 wt. and under.
Would love to see a video which talks a bit more of what a proper presentation looks like, and common problems with your cast if you’re not getting that presentation
I remember the catwalks from when I was a kid! Moving back somewhat close to that area (if 8 hours is close 😂) and I plan on trying for the Gila trout this winter
Seriously! Pick up your trash! It's becoming all too common to find trash in these beautiful pristine places. If you can't keep it clean, you don't belong there!
I just took my Sierra Rod across the Teton Crest Trail! Success the whole time! Three years in a row I have thru hiked a trail with a Tenkara rod! Couldn't imagine doing these trails with anything else!
Hey guys, I hate to be a bother about this-my dad and I put in an order for a replacement section 2 bear tooth that I broke and we haven’t heard back, it’s been a week. Order is #73415. Thanks.
