@@tobiasisback4605 I'm just making fun of people like you. Who say 1) that 1983/84 Evert (who was beaten like a drum by Navratilova) was at her peak, 2) that 1985/86 Evert was even better, 3) but that she was suddenly too old when Steffi started to beat her like a drum in 1986-89 (Chris' first loss to Baby Steffi was in April 1986).. 😂
@@carrerau7138 I didn’t say Evert was at her absolute best in 82-83, but she was playing awfully well with her trusty wooden racket to win three slams in a row (USO82, AO82, FO83) while Martina and the rest of the tour adapted to graphite. But once she also transitioned to graphite and improved her fitness, Evert was at her absolute peak of play from mid '84 to mid ‘86 before the heel and knee injuries took their toll. She says so, commentators agree. Only sad wannabe Parches claim she was over the hill by ‘82 😂
@@tobiasisback4605 Evert wasn’t over the hill in 87/88 either. Her problem had a name - Steffi Graf. Because WITHOUT counting her matches against the great Steffi Evert had a 90.0 winning percentage in 1984-86 and still one of 88.1 in 1987/88. Only marginally worse. But US commentators somehow had to explain away teenage Steffi‘s massive impact on the US tennis empire. So both Evert and Navratilova suddenly were too old and fighting with terrible injuries… 😂
Hi, thank you very much for the beautiful tennis matches, you continue to make me very happy. Please, would you not also find some famous matches of Hana Mandlíkova or Jana Novotna. Thank you very much for your time and I also wish you good health. Best regards Dominik :)
Amazing how much more stronger Chrissie became with the physical training and racquet switch to graphite…I don’t remember her hitting the ball this hard before.
Great video! And FYI, regarding that Connors - Lendl controversial call around 2:18: I put video in super slow motion & zoomed in (I have a Zfold big screen phone). The ball was on the line, slightly inside the line actually. Jimmy was and is a LEGEND, but he got this one wrong ;-)
I believe that this match after falling behind Graf 3-1 is her single greatest performance of Chris’s career. She’d never again beat graf , playing 9 more times winning just one set. Here her backhand display shows she has , had the greatest backhand ever of all time. This match was Chris’s last match with her full youth of strength. Vintage Chris evert like her last match that she won, againstSeles 6-0,6-2.
It was really hard to beat Evert in her back yard of Florida. I think her career w/loss stat is like 94% in Florida matches from1971 to 1989. She loved the hot sun and the wind was always more her ally than her enemy. And then there was the preferred surface that almost all those tournaments were played in...
it's interesting watching this match- Evert is hitting the ball much harder and cleaner here than she did through the rest of the year, and following years-- or am I hallucinating? the sound of if coming off her racket is nice to listen to. watching her matches in 1987-1989 it seemed like she lost a lot in her pace of shot. by contrast Graf is just a kid and showing her insane talent. backhand not super biting, but forehand is pretty good!
You're definitely not imaging how cleanly the ball was struck; the sounds and mechanics were glorious. You're probably right, and Chris might not have been trying as hard. During her last two years, Evert was facing players with more topspin, those who routinely moonballed and junk-balled her at times, which disrupted her rhythm. By then, her patience for such tactics was almost gone, and age was a major factor. Even though she got shellacked, those losing matches against Graf displayed pretty sound groundies, as did her matches against MJ Fernandez and Manuela Maleeva; and MM would purposely moonball and slow-ball Chris.
I think this was the last match that Chris Evert won, the Steffie Graf match, and I feel that Chris Evert's shots were sharper and more accurate when she used to have a thinner body. I felt that she did too much strength training to beat Navratilova and her body became too muscular and her shots lost their sharpness.
