How would you like to have a consistent forehand that you can always rely on and puts pressure on your opponents with lots of depth on your shots?
One of the most important areas you need to master for consistency on your forehand is what we call ‘The Hitting Zone’.
The best players in the world lengthen the hitting zone and extend out towards their target before releasing the swing.
In this video OTI Instructor James Ludlow shares some insights into what helped him with this all-important concept.

I have a problem with my forehand strike, because the first explanation I was given was incorrect and the way I visualized the shot was also consequently wrong. With a lot of work and persistence I've been able to overcome muscle memory, which was deeply rooted in my forehand strike. This video is excellent because it helps with the correct technical execution of the forehand. Very good indeed !

That simple concept of lifting from the shoulder is so fundamental and so helpful - thanks James.

There are a lot of tennis instructors who try to defy physics; try to defy the foundations given to us by Braden - you really give players the greatest chance to have long hitting zones! Thank you!

Good content! I totally have missed lifting my shoulder to extend hitting zone and hit a flatter ball. I am excited to see what kinda shape I can get on my forehands now. I’d also be interested to see a video talking about playing height as it relates to lifting the shoulder

Thanks! My forehand is often weak in matches and what you described is my problem. I video recorded myself and saw that my arm breaks across the body immediately after contact and there is a lack of power and depth. Will have to give this a try.

So, how would you find a short cross court angle with this type of follow through? It would seem you’d need to get off of the staircase and curve off towards the left if you’re a righty.

What if the incoming ball is at our chest or shoulder level? That's a pull across the ball situation right? Or at the waist how do you execute this 45 degree angle/stairway exercise?

I have same exact issue. I pull my racquet too early across the body. How do you handle high balls with this technique ? May be buggy whip like Nadal

This is very good, but I have a real problem doing this in return of serves. My main error is hitting into the net and I know that my swing path is off. Would like to see something on return of serve.. after all it is the second most used shot.

Hello, very interesting and useful. I was still thinking, what if you want to strike the ball in a high point? lets say at more or less shoulder height, just to not let it fall. How would this racket path adjust? Also considering the finishing of the swing in order to produce a penetrating topsin shot. Thanks in advance.

So what if the contact is chest high? The linear stroke theory is obsolete! It has been replaced with angular technique.
