Save money don't repalce the whole tensioner, replace the bearings on the pulleys. Tensioners cost a lot of money but the bearings can be replaced quite easily.

A drive belt tensioner is a pulley mounted on a spring mechanism or adjustable pivot point that is used to keep tension on the engine belts. Spring tensioners are designed to tension automatically while the pivot design types can be adjusted manually. Both are used to keep tension on the engine serpentine belts so that they can drive the various engine accessories.
When the tensioner has an issue, it can affect the how the belts drive the pulleys which can affect the performance and functionality of the vehicle. Usually a bad or failing tensioner will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem that should be serviced.
1. Grinding or squeaking noise from the belts or tensioner
The most common symptom of a bad or failing drive belt tensioner is noise from the belts or tensioner. If the tensioner is loose the belts may squeak or squeal, especially when the engine is first started. It is also possible for the tensioner pulley or bearing to wear out, in which case the vehicle will produce a grinding noise from the pulley.
2. Unusual belt wear
Another symptom of a potential problem with the drive belt tensioner is unusual belt wear. If the drive belt tensioner pulley has any sort of issue it can cause unusual and accelerated wear on the belt. A bad pulley can cause fraying on the edges of the belt, and in severe cases can even cause it to break.
3. Belt-driven accessories fail
Another symptom of bad or failing drive belt tensioner is failure of the belt driven accessories. Many of the engine’s accessories, such as the alternator, water pump, and AC compressor, can be belt driven. A seized or loose drive belt tensioner can cause the belt to snap, which will disables those accessories and can cause problems such as overheating, a dead electrical system and battery, or a disabled AC system. Usually a belt that has failed because of the tensioner will have to be replaced, along with the tensioner, in order to restore full functionality to the vehicle.
A drive belt tensioner is an important component as it is what keeps the belt properly tensioned so that it can properly drive the vehicle’s accessories. If you suspect that your drive belt tensioner may be having an issue, have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if it should be replaced.

Online Honda & Acura dealers sells the pulleys with new bearings (OEM Honda use NSK bearings) for $15 and $20 respectively (31180-RCA-A02 & 31190-RCA-A02). For that price you get a new pulley and bearing pre-assembled to save you lots of time/effort.

You forgot the cost of shipping

@@bundysgarage : Good point. I just paid $9 shipping for two of each (including a bunch of air filters). This was one state away from HondaPartsGuys in San Bernadino CA. I'm just hoping breaking the reverse-thread bolt loose once the tensioner is off the car is easy.....or should I do that while it's still on the engine? BTW: Honda uses Mitsuboshi brand drive belts and you can buy then without the Honda logo for about half price. They sometimes use Bando also which is even cheaper.

Do it while it’s still on the engine. Or if you have an air impact gun you can break it loose that way.

Can you punch in a faster rated rpm bearing for less resistance?
@rudymunoz901
@rudymunoz901 4 года назад
I thought about doing that, but the cost of buying the bearing and the socket (I don't have that socket size) was equal to just getting the pulley. I'm planning on getting a large socket set. What sizes do you recommend? that are common on this cars. Good vid though 👍

Isn’t the Honda Accord 3.5 v6 have a hydraulic tensioner?
@bundysgarage

Some do and some don't. Depends on what they had on the assembly line available when they built the car.

The tensioner spring weakens over time and allows the belt to slip which makes noise. Replace whole tensioner, not just the pulley.
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage Год назад
It’s take a long, long time for the spring to lose tension. In most cases, not all, the bearing fails before anything else.

Thanks for the video. I have a Odyssey 2007. The tensioner and pulley fell off the hood and the smoke came out, and the steering wheel was heavy. It was towed to Firestone , they replaced the parts and belt. A month later, when the engine is on on parking gear. The parts they replaced fell off the hood again. And the van was dead and towed. Is this a big problem ? If this happens again when it's driving on the highway ? Should I keep this 90000 miles Honda Odyssey?
@maxin3231
@maxin3231 3 года назад
Michelle Xie I won't keep any Odyssey; they have a lot of problems with the transmission. If you like minivans, get a Toyota sienna. Also, the pulley shouldn't fell off; I think they made a mistake or something. You don't replace pulley or bearing maybe once every 100k
@TruongLe-eo8kh

@@maxin3231 I like Honda motorcycle but my wife like the body of the odyssey. We had clunking of the transmission in cold morning without adequate warm up. I just replace the timing belt at 75 k miles because the tensioner is making noise in cold morning. Otherwise it is a good minivan. Oh, cable that pull the sliding side door broke after 5 years. I have to cherry rig it.

Nice man!! You can also rebuild the power steering pump to save money. I got all of the parts from acura for under 100.00 Everyone else wants 230.00 plus for a pump

Dude, buy a vise or a press and learn to use it. You shouldn’t use a hammer to put in bearings.
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 3 года назад
It's not that big of a deal. It's a bearing in a pulley, really can't mess that up. Now if it was a bearing on a knuckle, yes I would use a press.
