We went to Thariks Tandoori in West Street last Saturday. Very nice. 'Not for dogs'. Didn't see your producer. High calorific count with no exercise apart from crossing the road to the car. :-) Another great video Shamus, thank you.

Great video mate. Like the look of the expedition meal. I’ve had the summit to eat chicken fajitas not a fan it was really stringy couldn’t eat it. The us army mre meals 24 hr ration packs are really good. Great menu chicken burrito bowl a favorite. They come with flameless heaters, all the sundries, spoons, coffee, and the chewing gum ( army lads refer to this as a stool softeners lol)

Great video and some great meal ideas. My wild camp last night was great, Chiltern Hills overlooking Aylesbury Vale. We cooked our own food (nice curry lol) but will do the freeze dried next time to keep the weight down. Weather was kind to us and that Sea to Summit Etherlight XT sleep mat was so warm and comfy ! Well. From the home of the chicken tikka masala here in the curry capital glasgow. The shish mahal claims to have created it. It is definitely food for thought. I really prefer taking pre prepared food to a camp. Not always doable. Or adding to one off these meals. Part of my enjoyment is preparing the food and I enjoy it that wee bit more. Glad to see Petra snaffled in some treats. Enjoyed the vid. I watched the last one twice as promised. Ian

Hi Shamus, for me its about weight and taste. I'm lazy so I buy the packets you are reviewing, some hikers take pasta and lots of powders and add ins. Excellent video Shamus with another no nonsense explanation of the various types of ready packed meals. You must have tried everything under the sun with your time at BAS? As an aside I’ve just purchased some BPA free Mylar foil bags to give the homemade MRE a try. As much as I like the idea of walking into an outdoor shop and picking up these professionally manufactured meals I can’t help recoiling at the price! Brilliant to catch up via ‘messanger’ yesterday. I can’t believe it’s 28 years since Rothera and Endurance! Keep the brilliant videos coming. ATVB Graham - Sidestickflyer
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Thanks, Graham - One day I will sift my slides from those dates ad see if I can find Endurance while you were in 👍 Our staple ration at the time for field work was dehydrated beef in sauce with rice - tons of it! Beef munch, we used to call it. We used to brighten the trip by taking some tinned anchovies to eat on 'Biscuits Brown' and use the fish flavoured olive oil residue to flavour the 'munch' with. It seemed quite normal at the time. Ahhhh that reminds me of the time we got the cook to roast some chicken and we air dropped them Barnes Wallis onto field parties (from Tw'otters) for Christmas 😂 Catch up soon.

Another cracking video Shamus. I'm surprised you cooked for yourself though, you being an ex RAF guy, surely you would have got your butler to do that lowly task for you hahaha. I would add, for your viewers reference and to save costs (I know your video was sponsored but whilst the shop bought meals are great they are a tad bit pricey). I've been preparing my own DIY boil in the Bag meals for some time now. £20 vacuum sealer from Aldi including a roll of vacuum sealer bags. Cook your meals at home > freeze them and then defrost prior or on the journey ready for a quick boil routine with your brew water as you said. Delicious! Nom nom! That way you can decide what menus you like, Roast Dinner, Sausage and Mash, Blackberry Crumble with custard, the options are endless. I have even tested a home made boil in the bag pizza recently and can confidently state is was grrrrrrreat! See what I did there Petra lol.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
That sound's fantastic. I use a dehydrator at home, but as discussed in the video, it isn't the tastiest way to prepare food. I really want to do a 'man turns up, pitches tent, fries a steak and drinks beer' video as well 😂 I know they are popular and I quite like the idea of a steak on the hill. I like the idea of a vacuum sealer for home prepared food, I'm just too lazy at times, but I'll investigate. Thank you for taking the time to watch this 😊👍🐶

I’ve not seen the Arctic packs before, they look quite good. Chris from outdoorsgrub (no longer in business sadly) used to do ration packs where he put together a breakfast, main meal meal, dessert, beverage pack and a snack which I always found handy. I could just grab a pack or two and head out without having to bother with deciding what to have or if I had enough food. I know they are a bit more expensive and you can obviously find cheaper alternatives in the supermarket but I actually like the freeze dried stuff and it’s so much less faff. I’m always surprised at people cooking real food they have lugged up the hill; potatoes, steak, sauces, sausages, tins of beans, frying pans etc. I’m sure it tastes lovely but the weight, bulk, time to prepare it, cooking it and the washing up just doesn’t seem worth it to me. Each to his/her own of course and I totally get that for some that’s all part of enjoyment of wild camping. I much prefer the simplicity of a single pot, boiling water for my meal and hot drink at the same time, sticking it in a cozy for 10 mins to rehydrate and the only washing up is licking the spoon clean. Packaging folds flat, minimal waste, no mess, no fuss.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
That's my take on on it to be honest. However... Just once I want to try the dying pan and steak on the the hill thing... I've watched so many videos where this is what people are doing that it's given me a creative 'appetite' to want to do just one video where I have steak and a beer ... Just once. 😂😂😂

How much do you think a German Shepherd needs in energy for a full day hike on hills and how do you work it out for Petra? I know a fair number of wild campers like taking a dog with them. Food for hiking dogs could be useful video too - if you haven't already.

The Turmat range is a bit expensive at £7.99 to £11.99 (main meal), but their field ration pack (10 items) at £14.25 seems good value. However, if they are as tasty as you say, they'll be worth the money for a one-off wildcamp.

I can't get on with those dry meals, because no matter how much water or how much I stir - there's always a pocket or two of dry powder somewhere which ruins it for me. Despite the weight, I prefer the Wayfarer meals - especially as they can be eaten cold in an emergency (I've tested this and they still taste great unheated).

Hi Shamus - can you tell me what's the cookset you're using in the vid? Looks a good sized unit. On the subject of food, I always take the homemade option - pre cooked and put into the mylar bags, heat sealed and frozen. Can also do it with dry products like porridge and you can put your own dried berries, banana chips in it as well. Like wayfarer but better. Left over spag bol, stew, curry, chilli etc, frozen down and kept for when you need them. Ok a bit more weight but in reality not really noticeable for a couple of days. I'm from Yorkshire so spending £20-30 on meals for camping makes no sense to me!
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Hi Chris, thanks for watching. The Stove is part of the cookset - it's an MSR Reactor - not the lightest in the world but it boils water in a flash. As you can see, I like to use the mylar bags for porridge, but I also dehydrate my own foods as well 👍😊🐶

Had the Expedition Food Scrambled eggs and caramelized onions today. Excellent flavor BUT literally impossible to hydrate properly. Used the exact amount of water as described, waited for the advertised 8mn, the eggs were solid as old bread while sitting on a mini ‘pond” of water. Stirred the content again, closed I’d for another 12-15mn and STILL the water wasn’t absorbed and the consistency was far from ideal... pity.

The producer phoned me up and irritates me 🤣 (He doesn’t really exist) I don’t use a drone, they aren’t legal within Dartmoor National Park without specific permission. It’s a 360 degree camera, but it can have the impression of being a drone - it sits on a 2.8M pole but the technology hides the pole 👍

Shamus, great video. I'm sure that this has already been mentioned, but you neglect to take in to account the weight of water required for freeze dried/dehydrated meals compared to 'wet' meals when comparing their overall weight. Some of the well known brands of freeze dried meals require well over 300ml of water per meal. 3 meals per day equals approximately 1 litre of water or 1 kg in weight
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Hi Charles, it's a good point, but normal practice is to stock / replenish water at a suitable camp; or at an opportunity before a camp - so ordinarily you wouldn't be carrying the water 👍

I'm guessing that everyone who features those Real Turmat packs on RU-vid has been given them for free, as the incredible expense of them is always glossed over. That Reindeer Stew is not 'a couple of quid' more than a Summit To Eat - it's up to 3 times the price, up to 14quid - with no real calorie advantage.

Phew that’s a relief 😅 The dehydrated food, do you weigh it before and after dehydration. Thus knowing how much water for rehydration. Then are you a presoaker then boil in the bag? Or add boiling water and wait 10-15minutes?

You have to spend a lot of money to maintain your body weight on a multi-day hike using freeze-dried food. It's just too expensive for what it is. What I'm doing now is buying my own freeze dried egg, cheese, and peanut butter. Then purchasing supermarket freeze-dried noodles and using the other ingredients to bulk up the food. I believe that freeze-dried camping food in this country is too expensive for what it is. It does not supply enough calories per pack. I wish a large food company would come into this market and undercut these businesses that are making a king's ransom out of basically very simple low cost dishes like chicken curry. I've worked out roughly to supply yourself with enough calories with freeze-dried food walking 15 miles a day let's say. You would have to eat four packs of freeze dried food. Even at a conservative price of £7 per packet. That means you are spending £28 per day to feed yourself - ridiculous.
