For some, life is a lot more than money. Stevenson, had many opportunities to leave Cuba; but he was happy with his life, representing his country. His life, his choice, and his terms.
Laslo Pap, Teofilo Stevenson , Felix Savon : all 3×Olympic Gold Medalist. first from Hungary and others two Cuba. They are the biggest talents on the Box History.
Regardless the belt, Teofilo Stevenson was a world champion. And from the interview, he is gracious, giving credit where it is due. He is not a mean or petty person. These are admirable qualities.
Jeff Wilson not a world champion, he was an older more experienced guy fighting 18 year old kids. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Shavers, Lyle and a few other pro heavyweights would have beat him easily.
He never seeked money for what he did, and saying that he was terrific is something lame to say, considering that he was in fact golden medallist, even Ali respected him and were close friends
Communism never allowed it. Fidel was the boss and he was against paid sport (Professional). I know because I am Cuban and I know how everything is on the Island. But as Teófilo I have seen few MONSTERS. Almost once Ali is confronted, but he advised himself and became friends with him. in fact very good friend ajajjj. Regards.
@@cliffordharris9077 Between Stevenson and Savon they beat 7 future heavyweight champions !!! 1.Tony Tubbs 2. John Tate 3.Michael Dokes 4.Sultan Ibragimov 5.David Tua 6.Ruslan Chagaev 7. Shannon Briggs
Stevenson in his prime fighting as a pro against the greats during the 70s and early 80s would have been a must see event. I think there were guys that would have beat him but it would have been great to watch.
I understand he was very highly regarded & he lived as a King, as long as he was Olympic Class athlete. And all of that may have ended with his career. Probably what drove him to alcohol.
@@toddnineeightseven9595 Well staying amateur for 20 yrs ,I would say was a mistake! Somewheres along the way he should have attempted professional fights !
If you can knock someone out within 3 rounds as consistently as Stevenson did, just think how he would have performed at the professional level with 15 rounds to knock a cat out
HE WON'T HAVE GONE FAR HE WOULD GOTTEN HE ASS KICKED.. I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS ONE BIG CHICKEN SHIT OF A MAN... HE KNEW HE'D GET HIS ASS KICKED WITH OLDER AND PROFESSIONAL FIGHTER THAT'S WHY HE STAYED IN THE AMATEUR LEVEL I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS JUST ONE BIG CHICKEN SHIT.. OF A MAN
10 years youger than Ali so the outcome would depend on when the fight would have happened. Think he would have beaten a 35 year old Ali but not a prime Ali
You must be a Cuban cuz Stevenson never beat anybody good Much less a great fighter 20 years as a Amatuer against kids and you think equals great lol you're Comical Biggs was winning this til he quit he didn't even the first right he missed him And It's nothing Stevenson did that's makes great he a fake
@@cedricliggins7528 I knew some Cuban immigrants back in the day when I was living in Florida and they told me that Milan was gunned down or stabbed in some bar fight.I would think stabbed because guns are banned in Cuba unless you're military or Police.
Let me add that Milan beat American Heavyweight and future World Champion as an amateur. This was when Greg Page was just rolling everybody up no small feat.
well, i disagree..... i look at it this way.......during his career, he had plenty of opportunities to defect..... an seek fame and fortune.. yet he never did. he stayed in cuba feasting on 18-20-year old kids as he got older....
Who did he ever beat that was great name me one.fighter Stevenson beat that is considered a great fighter? O! Not none ever nobody close to being great0 zero Zip he's no Hero
Sultan Ibragimov 3.Ruslan Chagaev 4. Shannon Briggs 5. Tony Tubbs 6. John Tate 7. Michael Dokes
this over-hyped amateur Stevenson made a career feasting on 18, 19, 20 year old kids...…. George foreman would have knocked him out, Ali would have schooled him, Tyson would have destroyed Teofilo, Evander Holyfield would have chopped Teofilo down to size....etc...…..I mean, look at Teofilo fight footage, look how awkward, off- balance he looks..... look how he drops that left hand.. well, to be fair he was always an amateur.....
@@sarkararijit15 ok that's fine, your opinion an your entitled to it...…… let me ask you a question,, how do you think Teofilo would have fared against Marciano, Ali, a young Tyson, Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, hell , i'll even throw ray mercer in there with his granite chin...…...
I would risk all my money that everyone you mentioned had fallen to the ground with Teofilo's powerful right straight. I'm sure. Not even Ali wanted to face it. in fact, he became very good friends with him 😉 ahahah 🤣👍
I read your post and agree with you because I have seen amateur fighters from my old gym that were in their thirties and still amateur beating up on a bunch of 15, 16, 17 year old school boys and winning multiple state golden glove titles doing it. It was disgusting but the minute they moved up to the regionals they all lost. Besides that I'm not gonna even mention the drug use that was going on in amateur boxing back then and I ain't talking steroids!
