Teradek RT Review: A Seriously Powerful Follow Focus!

When I say powerful, I ain't kiddin'. This unit is packed with both features and amps. Save yourself the headache and use an unregulated D-tap when powering this device. Think of the extreme power draw as a double-edged sword: the motors are EXTREMELY powerful, but at the expense of sometimes tripping batteries. The medium and low torque might sound loud- but it's not very noticeable when doing normal pulls. My two biggest features of the Teradek RT are the incredible range and SmallHD overlays. My two biggest grips are the ACI functionality (it's pretty buggy) and the extreme power draw. Even though Medium Torque limits the motors to 2.8A, it still definitely tripped RED's Production Module a few times on set. Overall, it's a high quality and robust follow focus system.

Great vid, super informative. I’m a 1st and have wanted to see what other people have thought about this system. I’ve used it 4 times and hated it, but I might have had a faulty one (same one each of those 4 times) build quality was good but ironically range was trash. Couldn’t get through one follow car on “USA MAX LEGAL” setting in LA. Even my Nucleus-M has no trouble with that. The Heden YMER1 and YMER3 are more reliable from my experience in this price bracket. Every system should have vibrating marks at this point, Tilta proved it’s possible in cheaper units. Really wish the RT was everything I wanted it to be

Thanks so much for doing this. Battery pulling solved an issue I had on set the first time using this system, the system kept shutting down and we all were pretty confused as to why. Couple questions Does it still take 30 seconds to reboot? That was awful, after having it all shut off before a take and then having to wait in front of 50 people just for the system to come back on. Then, having the lens mapping on the side seemed to be more distracting than helpful. I pull a lot from monitor and from marks, but when I watch monitor i keep a close eye on where the focus is by watching walls, and corner surroundings, do you ever get used to it without impeding this type of workflow?

it's almost unprecedented to get this much information and this quality of a review for a system in this tier! thanks a lot for making it! how did you find the control wheel specifically? I find the WCU-4's wheel to be second to none, but on a lot of the smaller budget shoots that come up I'm forced to use the Nucleus-M (which, for the people asking below, is imho terrible, not just because of the bugs, but because of the wheel's small size and how 'undampened and loose' the focus wheel is). Is this more similar to Arri's or Preston's?

The WCU-4 is great because the wheel is adjustable. The RT knob is very smooth, but doesn't have much dampening similar to a Nucleus. I haven't used a Preston, so I can't speak for that system.

@@robchado oh, that's a real turn-off then. are you familiar with any other system that has a wheel that's similar quality to the wcu-4s in a cheaper package? I think software is important, but above all the physical qualities of the unit are the deciding factor in my experience

can you set marks visual marks on the monitor overlays? Kinda like how you can on the WCU4?

How do you feel about the price\feature set of the CTRL 1 system package? 2500$ seems like a great deal for the distance overlay alone from someone who works with the Nucleus M...

How does the hand unit connect to the SmallHD?

There's a cable that connects the monitor.
