Every morning thousands of young Ethiopian athletes run in hope of becoming a world champion one day. But only a few make it to the world rankings. This is the story of the other 99%, who struggle every day to achieve their dreams. With Haile Gebrselassie.

I grew up absolutely loving the sport and was very driven and I've gotten to meet some of the best to ever lace up flats and spikes. Being much older though now, it's perfectly clear the staggering difference in drive that these people have in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda because they HAVE to win. Their livelihood literally depends on it. As the gentlemen said perfectly, people over there HAVE to win whereas we in the west simply WANT to win. These people have a drive to succeed in this sport that quite honestly humbles me and puts any sort of drive I thought I have to shame. Kudos to all those that dare to follow this path and even try to make it. Hopefully they can find more opportunity down the road 🙏🏼

It’s depressing to think of the inevitable crushing of the overwhelming majority of runners’ dreams because elite-level talent is innate and very rare but necessary to make it big in the world stage, not just dedicated hard work alone. Just the nature of nature’s randomness.

Colin Young says talent is the most important factor and Kip Keyno says is 3/4 mental...I guess it depends on how you define talent but unless you have focus, discipline, motivation, willingness to suffer, and a good environment to train, talent wont do you much good..

The guy that sales "talent is the #1 factor" is quite ignorant, go read some bios and get out of this myth, his example about the 18 y/o being world champion, he probably didn't reseach much about what that guy was doing BEFORE he was 18.
@mrlongboardingcanada
@mrlongboardingcanada 4 года назад
It's a combination of hard work and talent.
@dfvallejosc
@dfvallejosc 3 года назад
He is right. Nowadays people sell the idea that with hardwork you can get anything in life, but it's not true. In sports, if your you are not born for that, you will never achieve something at maximun level in a competition. I explain my self, if my VO2 max is 40 ml/kg/min is impossible for me to win or break a world record in a marathon at the maximum level. Yeah, I can compete and finish the marathon, but I have zero chances to win.

Why not speaking Ethiopian language Amharic
@StuntwomanS19V
@StuntwomanS19V 4 года назад
Mame Redi Because my Amharic is too bad. Mastu (the female runner) is speaking in Amharic and that was already difficult enough. I would have liked to have more Amharic, that’s why I still put an Amharic title. Amharinya betam astchegari kankoa 😉
