"Wishing Well" is a song recorded by Terence Trent D'Arby. The second single from the 1987 album Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby, the song reached number one on both the Soul Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 on May 7, 1988.[2] "Wishing Well" was certified "Gold", indicating sales of 500,000, by the Recording Industry Association of America in October 1991. Written by D'Arby and Sean Oliver, D'Arby said "Wishing Well" was written "when I was in a half-asleep, half-awake state of mind", and that he "liked the feel of the words".[3] Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 paired with D'Arby in production of the song, which was released on CBS Records.[3][4] Once released, "Wishing Well", along with D'Arby's debut single "If You Let Me Stay", went into "heavy rotation" on MTV.[5] D'Arby performed the song live at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards, where he lost the Grammy Award for Best New Artist to Jody Watley. When the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, it had charted for 17 weeks, the longest progress to number one in the US charts since Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" in 1983.[6]
Ben Greenman of The New Yorker credits "Wishing Well", along with other D'Arby songs, with "[bringing] soul music into the eighties".[7] Writing about D'Arby for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the song "sparse funk", and noted how "Wishing Well" was his first major hit in the United States.[8] Kathi Whalen of The Washington Post credited the song's chart success to D'Arby's combination of "'60s soul and pop on top", and called "Wishing Well" "bouncy".

And you haven't seen his dance moves!!💃Thank you, Empress for doing this song! I'm going to make a request for TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY singing "WHO'S LOVING YOU" from the concert DVD In Concert - Ohne Filter 1987. You think you've heard that song, but not like this! Its the best vocal performance I've ever seen. He changed his name to Sananda Maitreya and moved to Europe and has continued to put out great music. I've been a fan since I first heard Wishing Well in the '80s and that cassette tape got me through a lot of housework, lol! Other great songs he had hits with are "If you Let Me Stay" and "Dance Little Sister". You will be amazed at any of them! 😀🎸🎶💃

Hey Empress, This was the greatest album in 1987 (top ten all-time). I think he was around 19 years old at the time). "Introducing the Hardline According to Terrance Trent D'Arby" Every single song on it is a banger. He also had moves; you should definitely watch the video. He was AMAZING live. Terence Trent D’arby! (Surname pronounced just “Darby”) 🏆 I remember soooo clearly when this came out. The singles were beyond fire and the album received the most glowing reviews possible. He was just a young dude from Britain with that AMAZING voice, plus he was (is?) a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, so the press immediately compared him to the genius of Prince. It seemed like his young man’s ego couldn’t contain the sudden rush of power because he started making self aggrandizing statements, saying he was essentially the next savior of pop/soul/RnB... Then his second album came out and it was also brilliant, but instead of attempting to cool off his egotistical image with gentler interviews and more soul searching songs, he’d gone hard into boastful lyrics and grandiose performances and interview quotes, in a way that felt unearned for such a new artist, and the press and public just turned on him. I think his youthful egotism would’ve played out much better in the USA, where individualism is baked into the culture, but being British, with his success largely in Europe, the UK and Australia, and the latter 2 cultures extremely suspicious of inflated egotism, people had had enough. Such a shame. The kicker of it all though is that this isn’t some young talent with a good voice who had too much cocaine and started boring people... Terence actually COULD have been the next savior of pop. His talent was truly jaw dropping. Plus he was next level beaUTIFUL. His story is like an earlier version of D’Angelo’s, another gorgeous and ultra talented artist who had a very difficult time maintaining his career. D’Arby/D’Angelo... what a delicious disappointment sandwich. 😥 🥪

@@EmpressReacts I’m shook! Was just listening to Terence’s debut album for the first time in many years, and the songs are now credited to Sananda Maitreya, a name he changed to in 2001. Since then he’s released 9 studio albums and 4 live albums!!! None of which I’ve ever heard or heard of! AND even though he lived in London at the beginning of his career, signed his deal there and found his greatest success in Europe and Australia, he’s actually American! He was in the army when he was young and after being posted to Germany he left and moved to London to pursue music. Here I thought he’d disappeared in the mid 90s but he’s been out there ascending, descending and ascending all over again 🌀

MJ and Prince was at the top of their careers in the 80s. Hollywood elites didn't want Terence disrupting MJ and Prince careers. Hollywood elites felt Terence favor Prince and they didn't need another Prince. Hollywood elites/music industry forced Terence out of the United States. Terence moved to the UK.
