In this video I dive deeper into the uses of terra sig and how you can get different results depending on how terra sig is applied, what it is applied to, and effectively what happens when applying multiple layers.
Let me just say, I was not expecting the results I got. I did not think 20 layers would be viable, but it definitely is.
Although the pot did crack, I believe it was due to handling and not from the terra sig itself because it did not crack on the thick terra sig layers.
If you found this video useful in anyway, please leave me a comment down below and let me know what it is you found useful and what I could work on next, thanks!

Is that coats, brushed only, or do the drips count? Have you tried using silk to burnish?

I don't think I counted drips into my equation. And I haven't tried burnishing with silk, but it sounds like it would work great!

What was the specific gravity of this sig? Thanks for sharing!

I only went off ratios of clay to water to sodium silicate. I have just recently bought the tools necessary to measure specific gravity

Does anyone else see the running stick figure? The stamp being the head. :) I absolutely love this piece for so many reasons!

Awesome!! Any reason why you use horse hair vs any other hair?
@Higher_Perspective_Art
@Higher_Perspective_Art 3 года назад
I actually use my girlfriends hair most of the time lol. Horse hair is a great hair to use though, especially when you pull the pot out at higher temperatures because the hair is a lot thicker than human hair. So it will inevitably stay on the pot until its cooled down and the pores have closed, permanently sealing that design made from the hair. If its too hot and you put a thin hair like human hair on it, it may burn on, but then the carbon from the hair will eventually burn off the pot because it couldn't cool down in time to seal that design. Or at least thats how I understand it from my experiments with hair and feathers.

@@thorashebear7604 Thank you, that means a lot! I'm ready to get back into ceramics as well, the summer months are too hot for me to throw or record outside for too long lol. Finally hit the 70's last week so expect more videos to come. If you have any suggestions on videos you'd like to see next im all ears as well.

Is the pot bisqued fired first?
@Higher_Perspective_Art
@Higher_Perspective_Art 2 года назад
Good question, no its not bisqued before hand. Just bonedry clay with coatings of terra sig.

Nice metallic look, wonder if on the 20 layers it started to seal up the crumbling of the 15 layers it has a thicker look.
@Higher_Perspective_Art
@Higher_Perspective_Art 3 года назад
The 20 layer was definitely thicker. I think I caused the crackling effect on the 15 layer when I tried burnishing it with my finger nail instead of the plastic bag. The 20 layer is immaculate and feels very smooth, even over the textured half.

Should you burnish between layers?
@Higher_Perspective_Art
@Higher_Perspective_Art 2 года назад
Hey Jennifer, that's a good question! I would say the less burnishing the better, at least with the clay that I use. I have a tendency to pull off bigger specs of sand/grit if I continually burnish. This is just due to the fact that my clay is not as fine as store bought clay. Depending on how many layers you want to put on there, I would put on a max of 5 layers at a time before burnishing and continuing. If you wanted to put 4 layers on, just put 4 layers on, letting each layer settle for 30-45 seconds before putting on another layer. Then after the 4th layer is put on, wait for some moisture to dissipate and then burnish. It will take a lot of experimenting with your clay body, but hopefully this will help in some way!
