When you have a specific round limit, the key is to really focus on anything which moves the global parameters. Anything else I mostly ignore. It's the time limit which makes this so difficult, so getting early parameter increases (and therefore early TR/MC bumps) is crucial. Loved seeing the coop mode being played 😀

This was a great playthrough as always! I definitely want to try this as a co-op, I've been playing the solo game a lot recently and found that the last 1-2 rounds I really had to spam Production and Actions to even stand a chance, and it was always really close!

The co-op mode was made with my husband and I in mind, I swear. It will probably take forever for us to win, but we will have a good time trying. Thanks for the playthrough, you two! Very much enjoyed it.

Great playthrough. I got this game for friends for Christmas and they've really enjoyed it. I'm not really big on outer space themes, but it was their cup of tea!

I found this to be a very relatable playthrough. Every so often, my wife and I come across a game and, like Monique, go, "I think we may not be very good at this game." Lol. It was fun to watch you guys try to get those last few adjustments in the end and better luck next time!

My copy is currently being shipped, so hopefully I will be able to crack this soon :) I am glad you chose to do the co-op mode, it’s something almost no one else is doing right now. One thing you made harder for yourself is that you could have taken the bonus action for Phase II first, i.e. draw a card first and then potentially use it to pay for another red or blue card. Anyway, it’s tough, like in the original game. I guess there is a certain amount of luck in the solo/co-op mode regarding the cards you get. I’d recommend building only major production cards (which raise production by at least two steps) and money-generating cards, and then spend the rest of your money on doing standard actions, it is usually the fastest way to bring the global parameters to the top. Also, that corporation that lets you exchange 7 rather than 8 plants for a greenery also helps a lot. The main issue with this version is that money is usually tough at the beginning, so it’s always a tough choice what to do first. Thanks again and take care!

Yes! I was waiting for this! Thank you both, love your gameplays, my girlfriend does not like the original so I think this will be better suited for her. After the pandemic would love to see a social deduction game with all the team.

First, great try on that coop game mode, it didn't look easy. The only thing I would recommend is drafting your first hand to see if have a better start. Other than that you guys did a great job. Thanks for the playthrough.

I'm still debating should I get this because I have Terraforming Mars. This looks so much smoother an experience. For your play I would say that cash is king. I'm guessing you should be making 30-40 MC each during the production phase. Then you can play better cards and pay for the standard projects. Playing solo in TM, I have found that increasing your TR through standard projects in the early game is better than playing cards. And maybe having a production phase on most rounds would be worth a try? Well, I can't really give you advice since I haven't played the game :) All I can say is: better luck next time!

If y'all have played original Terraforming Mars (I figure you have but just want to make sure) do you think you like Ares Expedition more as a competitive game? This looks like a more streamlined version of the original game, but I'd like to hear y'all's thoughts on the comparison.

I have heard to others wondering if it's a streamlined version. I'd say it's more that each game has it's own twist. In turns of tutorial video length, they are about the same, so not a dramatically reduced ruleset.

I didn't think you were able to discuss the phases openly I know the rules mentioned saying "I have a lot of heat" and missed that part that said "I'm going to choose the production phase." We missed it in our playthrough and it really does impact the game as we duplicated planning a lot, which severely slows down the engine building.

@@WatchItPlayed yeah pretty much all the planning, missed in the rules where it said you could discuss and specifically gave the example that "I'm going to play Production" was OK. We played last night and kept getting duplicates because I missed that and figured that would be giving too much info. So have to try again.

Thank you for the playthrough. You are great! I love Terraforming Mars and think picking this one up, but... I only played 1 game of terraforming mars without drafting mechanic. And it was terrible game. I'm kind of worried the lack of drafting will be similar issue in this game. Have you had that feeling?

Hey guys! Why, at 4:43, have you played 2 green cards, while the development card says you can play only one green project card? So as I read it - playing 2 green cards is illegal

@@WatchItPlayed In 15 turns you have to raise oxygen 14 times, heat 19 times, and flip 9 ocean tiles. That's 42 instances of terraforming that need to be completed over 15 turns. That's an average of 2.8 per turn. At that rate, you need to be playing the Action phase while having the required resources or a card that directly interacts with terraforming pretty consistently every turn. I think the impact of your starting hand plays too much of a role in coop mode being possible to win personally. I'd, at the very least, suggest adding a mulligan rule to discard cards from your starting hand to draw new ones at the start of the game.

@@novelenigmas I haven't played the solo myself, so you might be right, but I always hesitate to house rule before I've had a chance to try a few times (just to see how it feels as intended) - but that's the joy of a game, once you own it, you can adjust as you like!

@@WatchItPlayed I totally agree with you, I'm just suspicious that the company that made the game didn't design coop mode around being winnable every time. I think you're expected to lose about 90% of coop games, but I'm not positive. I actually came to this video hoping to find something that would tell me that my wife and I just play the game wrong in regards to rules or that we were overlooking some key aspect of the game somehow.

@@novelenigmas No, I'd say you were probably playing correctly (though you may want to check out separate rules video for that here on this channel). It's pretty common for co-op games to be set extra difficult, that said you can always make personal adjustments to make it easier (start with some resources), and then scale up the difficulty as you play more.

Husband and i tried co-op 2 player.... took us like twice the amount of round allowed to finish the game. dont know how u can win this in 15 rounds >.
