Terrarium Tips - FIVE Mistakes Beginners Make
Many problems can occur when creating a terrarium ecosystem and closed terrarium care is important to understand. Many terrarium tutorials omit common mistakes so in this video I’ll show you 5 common mistakes beginners make. Terrarium basics are vital to understand when undergoing your terrarium setup. A closed terrarium ecosystem takes practice to get right. Things like watering a terrarium, moss for terrarium, dealing with terrarium mold, picking terrarium lighting for plants are all covered.

AS always, thanks for sharing this!! I live in a tropical country (costa rica), and I´ve been making terrariums for a year and a half, and I have noticed the heat in my terrariums, so I try to open them regularly. I´ve been doing my research, reading and watching videos of terrarium making, but I think the best is combine all that info with your own observations, and taking notice from the environment where you live. Here we have only summer and winter, so the changes in temperatures or humidity are gentle. All plants that I use, ferns, or begonias are from my own nurseries, and my mosses are collected from the street, or from people that ripped them of from their houses (there are no shops here where u can find mosses) or my own small backyard. I think observation is key to comprehend how and why your terrariums behaves in certain way...

I’ve made every mistake mentioned, unfortunately, over and over again. At least until now. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating- thank you so much for your videos! I love terrariums and have strived for a while now to make them the enjoyable, relaxing and mind nourishing experience most others have, however, until I found your channel my experiences were a frustrating cycle of building (with noticeable apprehension of failure), satisfaction and enjoyment for a few days/weeks, then the sickening acknowledgment of realizing I’d failed yet again. So the fact that you not only list the mistakes, but also offer solutions goes a long way in ensuring I won’t continue this cycle going forward. The only thing I’d add and probably the biggest thing I’m guilty of is rushing the whole process. Not only have I wanted to complete an entire build in one setting, which might not be difficult for some setups and/or a more experienced builder, I often chose to build more complicated terrariums and not always with all the correct components. As common sense as that is not to do, I found myself struggling with it every time. After watching several of your videos, I’ve finally learned that this can’t be a relaxing, mind nourishing hobby if I choose to start at levels too involved for my experience and/or without everything needed to do so correctly from the beginning. It only served to set myself up for frustration and failure and that obviously negates my whole purpose for getting into terrariums. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am that you were able to change my mindset.

Hi Ben. I built my first terrarium using a 10 gallon carboy. I have a drainage layer and a coir substrate and have planted a variety of plants with a few wooden sticks out of the garden to add a woodland look. I also built a cork stopper housing several hidden features which are connected to a microcontroller in a small box:- a humidity detector which flashes a red led if the humidity is higher than 80% and flashes at a faster rate if it falls below 70% indicating the need for water; an ambient light detector which turns on three white led’s when the ambient light falls below a certain level; I’ve also fitted a discrete plastic tube which is connected to an aquarium air pump, the pump is turned on when the humidity rises above 80% allowing the stale moist air to be slowly replaced by drier fresh air. So far the plants seem to be thriving and I can see some roots protruding into the substrate. Do you think I’m on the right lines?

Hi Ben, thanks for the video, I am here in Johannesburg SA, just starting out with this fascinating hobby, I am not a plant guy, I built my first sealed terrarium in a small tomato jam jar, about 3 weeks ago, so far its still ok, but it was just a trial. Put in a small cactus and some moss from between my outside wall, been adding 4 to 6 drops of water after first 10 days, the small piece of fern I added did not take. I saw some nice glass jars at our local Checkers store the other day, so am gearing up for my next project, this art seems to be quite new here in SA, or maybe its just me. Anyways many thanks for the video and pointers. I'll let you know how the project goes...

I had a terrarium going pretty well this summer. It was on the north side of the house and doing very well. I opened the top to let it breathe a bit, ran some errands and came back only to find everything looking dead! When I removed everything a few days later, I found a hole in the middle and dug out a walnut. Turns out the local chipmunk thought it was a great spot to hide his stores. I'm sure he was disappointed when he came back for it.

Excellent video - and Nadin is right, you do have a very good voice for this (and the background music isn't too loud). I have hearing problems and have given up trying to watch many videos because the speaker was either drowned out by the music or their voices were not clear. You and Tanner (Serpa Design) are the best by far. I grow orchids and watched a lot of videos before attempting my first terrarium, so avoided most of these mistakes (although I made others!) - the exception being overwatering! I was away a lot from April to October, and for weeks at a time, so watering had to be automated and with mounted orchids that needed daily (or more) watering in warm weather and planted ones that maybe only needed watering once or twice a week it didn't go well. For my most recent12 inch Exo Terra cube I followed Tanner's false bottom setup. The medium is too deep, so I don't have a lot of growing height, but I wouldn't see the plants because of the depth of the door frame and surround if it was shallower. It contains miniature cloud forest species, which are doing well and most have flowered. My main terrarium is an 18 x 24 x 24 Exo Terra) which I need to redo because I made a mess of the base and background, but there are a couple of plants, including a Dracula, that are doing so well I've been reluctant to disturb them. I'll watch some more videos before I bite the bullet! (This will be its fourth rebuild and I'd like to finally get it right.)

Very well done! Your video was extremely filled with a plethora of knowledge! You kept my interest peaked the entire time! Honestly not very many RU-vid'rs can and/or have done that. Lol Most of the videos in RU-vid land are filled with the people who just "blah, blah, blah" want to make a video. And, others don't know their butt from a hole in the ground, as to what they're speaking about, and then there are the dreaded people who speak way too fast ya can't understand a damn thing they're talking about! (& Lord knows I try... Rewinding over & over & finally give up!) BUT there are people like YOU! Who actually make an informative video! 👍🏻❤️ And, YOU my dear, are a blessing from the Big Guy from up above! From the beginning to the end, every single word you said, I personally can use as someone who has never made a Terrarium before. (I like to know how to do things, the correct way before ever doing them!) I am just glad I found your video vs. Someone else's! (you'd be surprised - or maybe you wouldn't lol at how many RU-vid'rs will "tell you how to do this or that, this way or that way" (that's why I'm glad I Found your video first! Lol) You are smart, you know your stuff & by golly your the man I will be coming to (your web page etc.) When I'm ready to make my first Terrarium (I've gotta figure out everything I need still) & you've got a new subscriber! P.S. The information re: the moss was especially interesting! Sincerely, Sarah God Bless & looking forward to your next video! 👍🏻😁

I've been collecting moss from the forest for my terrariums, and alot of them have turned brown. It must be cus they dont like a stagnant atmosphere as you mentioned in the video. I live in Sweden so I guess we have the same or smilir moss species as you guys have in the UK. I'd love to find a place where i can buy it instead, from someone who knows which moss works in terrariums best. But I also realized terrariums look beautiful without moss too.

Hi Victoria Have you tried Leucobryum glaucum? Try searching for it online, you might be in luck. It's also known as bun or pincushion moss.

This seems like so much fun! I think I'll try it :) being broke I'm glad the only mosses I can confidently identify happen to be Leucobryum glaucum and the Sphagnum genus, so I can collect them (w permission) instead of buying. Do you think sterilizing the Sphagnum moss before mixing it into the soil would be a good idea? Like, in the oven? Also I love the humour in this video.

Nahhh I wouldn't sterilise it! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video. I'm just doing some research for a creative writing project . . . question: what is the largest terrarium you've ever worked on? The largest you've ever seen? Do the problems get more complex the larger the terrarium?

@Worcester Terrariums The north facing window is not always true. In your case, even the southernmost place in UK is above 50°N latitude and the sun's maximum declination is 23½°. People living in the tropicals would have to shift their Jars according to the time of the year and sun's declination.

i definitely don’t agree on opening them every couple of weeks. it depends on plants / moisture levels but that’s a piece of advice that should just be taken at face value

So... I'm pretty new to closed terrariums but I've found that it's helpful for me to open and close the terrarium quite often in the first week or so, until the condensation on the inside of the glass is not overwhelming or constant. It may be that I'm watering them too much right after planting and need to let some of the humidity out but it seems to be working, do you do this as well? Also, I find that a lot of my plants will lose some foliage in the beginning, presumably casting off the old leaves and growing new foliage that is more adapted to the high humidity. I try to make sure that I'm right there to collect and remove any moldy or dying leaves right away as I don't yet have an in house cleanup crew. Thanks for your helpful tips, I'm on the hunt for a US source for terrarium moss.

We live in the arid Southwest of the USA, sometimes the humidity will drop as low as the single digits. We want to try a terrarium in a large glass bottle but it has a slight green tint in the glass, do you think it would work? We plan to keep the top open and water only when needed, using distilled water, tap water is very high in minerals especially calcium. We will use plants that would grow well here, as for moss, not here!!

İf the walls of closed terrarium are collecting droplets of water constantly it means there is too much water. The droplets are ok to be in the morning and evening but should not be there during the day. if they are there it's time to open the terrarium and let it dry. And if it is a bottle terrarium the water exist it very slowly.

Hi from Australia! Thanks for your wonderful videos which have helped me so much. I do have one request though - would it be possible to stop the music playing whilst you're talking? It just seems unnecessary and a bit distracting. Anyway, thanks again, keep it up :)

When over watered, Ive found that using an aquarium air pump and line inserted into the terrarium will help reverse the issue.

Thank you! I’ve had several terrariums for several years, and they seem to do well. I have only one plant in each, as they grow to fill the glass container, eventually. I have different epecias (sp?) in each, with different colored leaves. They do occasionally bloom. I have found that, I do occasionally need to wipe the algae off the bottom sides of the glass, with a paper towel. I did not know to take the glass lids off occasionally for air. How long would you recommend I leave the lid off? All day? Half a day? An hour? Thanks so much!

I think I was the biggest offender of overwatering my first couple builds. I’ve since come to the realization that if you build them with a false bottom, you shouldn’t see any standing water in it. Making sure the substrate is damp and the added moisture from plants seems to end up being adequate levels of water in the system. A closed system truly needs so much less water than you think it does.

@@WorcesterTerrariums Cool. I’ll be on the lookout for it. I think it’s taken me since early February to get the moisture level down to reasonable levels in one of my builds. A mixture of wiping excess condensation off the glass and putting the lid back on, and just leaving it off here and there for a few hours. Thankfully it has been thriving the entire time instead of rotting away. Although there is a large amount of algae growth in its false bottom. I assume either the excess moisture lead to this, or the soil (this was a kit bought for me before I started making my own substrate) had some type of added fertilizer that lead to the algae bloom.

It would be fun to make a video that reproduces the symptoms in practice, not just theory. For example, I watched several videos. One was an experiment to see if springtail eats mold. The springtail liked fresh food and rather avoided mold. Another video was growing land moss underwater. This has raised many questions about airflow, drainage and overwatering. I also watched a video of growing a pine tree in water. For pine trees, drainage is known to be very important. In the comments, people said that your pine tree will die soon, but the person who posted the video replied that the pine tree has been living well for several years. There seems to be a lack of scientific research when it comes to growing plants. The most important thing is reproducibility. You will have a good understanding of the symptoms from having killed many terrariums. But I hope you will do the experiment for others.

I perfectly simulated rain in my terrarium my terrarium absorbs water vapor from around it and I only put dirt and some grass in it and moss just started growing and I know my climate will work because I got my plants from my back yard.

See I just made sure I had a nice rock base, then gravel/sand, then substrate within my 10 gallon tank. I like to play the game of "what i see outside is what's going inside" and so far I have a milipede that's almost two years old. It's mainly sealed except a small little hole that I cover up fron time to time.
