About the castles bit: Having been in both Britain and France, there are more "classical" castles in Britain (as in big, grey stone things with a moat). French castles are often more like defendable, luxurious villas, and in this case are called Chateaus.
@engineeredarmy1152
@engineeredarmy1152 2 года назад
What does Chateaux mean?
@_blank-_
@_blank-_ 2 года назад
@@engineeredarmy1152 Just castle in French. It has the same origin as the English word castle too, the Latin castellum. In French, hard c's often soften to become 'sh' and the last syllable of words usually drop or become unrecognizable. Here -ellum became -eau (pronounced -aw). English took the word castle from Old Norman French castel which maintained its hard c's.

@Karagianis
@Karagianis 2 года назад
Interesting fact, when the first of these "classical" (btw "classical" would be more correct for Roman forts than castles) were being built in the UK, the architects mostly came from France. That style was bought to the UK by the Normans, up to 1066 no one in Britain had built structures like that. As late as the 13th century, when King Edawrd I was building a whole range of castles to cement his control of Wales, he hired the master architect Jacques de Saint-Georges from Savoy to design them. In short, most British castles were decidedly French style when they were built.

1:15 Depends on the time and place I guess. If you want to erase any traces of a nation while you conquer it you probably would destroy their castles. As maybe an example for this is in Hungary. After the Ottoman Empire got kicked out of historical Hungarian territory the Austrians decided to blow up a lot of castles so if a rebellion starts they can't get easy-to-defend bases. And, to my knowledge, this is the main reason why so many castles in Hungary were basically a pile of rubble before renovation.

Britain is devoid of Castles, specifically because Oliver Cromwell went on a massive demolition campaign after the Civil War. He wanted to destroy any that he couldn't immediately garrison to prevent them being used by any leftover Royalists to potentially restart the war. Before Cromwell, Britain looked very much like France did, on that map.

Though I think he meant to reach India since India was the main trader of spices. It was the reason European set sail in the first place because they had had enough of the Ottoman charging them exorbitant price for luxury goods like silks and porcelains as well as food like spices and tea. Columbus wanted to find an alternative route to India by sailing west while the Portuguese few years prior had done that by sailing south and then east along the coasts of Africa. That was when he stumbled upon _America_ and thought "I've arrived in India" and proceeded to call natives there iNdiAn.

No, they're called that because a piece of land in what is now Brazil was named after Vespucci. A mapmaker decided to just name both pieces of land after him and then that was used as a guide as other mapmakers did culminating in Mercator doing ti when he made the first atlas that went worldwide. Then much later they were decided to be separate continents. And I mean much later as in people are still alive from then. So THAT is why they're called the Americas.

We definitely had advanced ancient civilizations, depending on what you define as advanced. Phoenicians were extremely advanced compared to other civilizations of their time, as were the Minoans of ancient Crete, who had a palatial society complete with indoor plumbing ~2000 years before Rome even existed.

The Abstract Subway maps are great, because if you know what station you are at, and which one you want to go to, all you need to know is what lines to take, and what stops to get off on. Doesn't matter how long the routes are, or where they are going above ground. Use a normal street map if you need to figure out what station you need to go to, then the subway map is to find out how to get there.

I believe in ghosts simply because I’ve experienced something very weird and scary that I simply can’t explain and all the so called ”reasonable explainations” I’ve been told when I’ve told the story simply isn’t convincing me otherwise.. I mean, I’ve heard the structure of the house creek and even bang pretty loudly every once in a while. The experience I had simply was not it..

I'm pretty sure the reason why there are so many castles in France is because of the 100 years war, for those who dont know what happened, the english invaded, did rlly well and captured the west half of modern day France (and the rest of northern/western coastline) then started losing battles and lost it all
