2:33 This number does not really represent how wealthy people in Luxembourg are. The thing is that Luxembourg being a small and rich country, a lot of people living in neighboring countries come working here (higher salary…) and they represent around 40% of Luxembourg’s GDP. So actually, the medium income in Luxembourg is something between 50000$ - 60000$ per year (which is still substantial but nowhere near as 107000$ per year).

@roasted pancakes excellent points made. I do have to say, that we did leave quite a good bit of functional equipment. I use the word “leave” very loosely, as we gave it to the Afghan National Army for them to defend themselves and we spent the better part of 10+ years training them how to use it. Only for them to crumble like a wet dorito But no where near as much equipment was left behind as this “info graph” implies. It even says they have 4 C-130… as if, even if we left planes for the ANA to use, a C-130 is a multiple million dollar aircraft, I find it hard to believe we’d leave that behind… when you can just fly it out of there, it costs serious money to transport equipment, it costs less to transport a transport

It isn't what the Americans "left" behind, it's the equipment that had been sold/transferred/given to the Afghan military over the years. The amount of gear the US left behind in the evacuation was actually almost nothing since by the beginning of August, when the final collapse of the Afghan government began, there were only 650 US troops (and their equipment) left in Afghanistan, and they were protecting the embassy and Kabul airport. The number went up to 7000 when the US began deploying troops to secure the airport on August 13th, and all the gear they brought in was right there to be taken out with them in the final airlifts. Essentially all the gear on that list was abandoned by _Afghan_ forces, and belonged to them, not the Americans.

2:15 Part of this is due to US cities being built around driving cars everywhere. Suburbia in one place, workplace in another, shopping mall in yet another. You cannot walk anywhere, you can't ride a bike anywhere, it's all about driving a lot and far. I recently visited Münster (medium sized city in Germany) and took a stroll through one of the boroughs with a friend (not city centre but also not way out). We came across this 4 way intersection with 2-3 lanes in either direction across the main road. No moving car in sight. Can't be run over if no one is driving. That's what happens when you have the freedom to use public transport or just walk places bc everything you need is near.

Speaking for Holland, I'd contribute the low amount of traffic deaths to road design. Speeding a little can be comfortable on the highways, but in a town there will be lots of artificial bumps and curves that make you want to drive the speed limit and not faster. Also, public transport is often made affordable for really young and old people and employers encourage use of public transport for daily commute by handig out public transport cards valid on that trajectory (or perhaps the whole country if you work for a really nice company).

12:50 Fun fact: New Hampshire doesn't tax any of their liquor purchases, leading to surrounding states citizens "smuggling" liquor across the border
@pablonh
@pablonh 2 года назад
Well, we do have taxes on liquor, but they're very low, so much of what is purchased here ends up out of state.

Brazil's GDP per capita: "Does it mean I'm above average? 🤩"
@VGV1deo

5:05 They clearly found the global average with the mean, but with such a large skew to the right, the median would be a better average for this dataset. The median is $1.91, with the 25th percentile being $0.70 and the 75th percentile being $4.72. Equatorial Guinea, Yemen, and the Cayman Islands are all outliers in this dataset.

(6:15) This is why you have to learn, and to use, proper metric. It makes it easier to understand stuff. T = 1 000 000 000 000 × the unit n = the unit / 1 000 000 000 Hz = frequency, occurrences per second m = metre, basic length Higher nm value means longer distance between each peak. Since light has a "constant" speed, that means that a longer distance between peaks means less peaks reach your eye per second. Simple as that.

Part of the reason Luxembourg's GDP per capita is so high is a statistical anomaly. Nearly half of its work force are border commuters from Germany, France, and Belgium. They contribute to the GDP, but are left out in the GDP per capita, which only takes into account the population living in the country.

The oil crisis of 1973 led the French government to drastically change policy to ensure energy independence (France has no oil). They built dozens of nuclear reactors within a decade, nearly completely decarbonizing their energy sector. As a result, France has some of the lowest carbon emissions in the developed world at 5 tonnes per person per year (the US emits 16 tonnes per person per year).

Carnegie Mellon Univ. is pretty consistently ranked in the top 20 or 30 universities in the country and I saw somewhere had it ranked 28th in the world (and it should be for 60k a year). Maybe it's just a local bias but I'm surprised it's not well known outside of Pittsburgh it would seem. Also when he said "Mellon University" I cringed a little. lol
