i make cottage pie once a month, instead of using a packet of 'mixture' to create the sauce i use a can of oxtail soup with two oxo beef cubes added to thicken it up, it gives the sauce a lovely rich beef taste.
@@happyfeet4506 fry the mince & onion as normal, then add it to a saucepan with the oxtail soup and add the beef stock cubes (and few splashes of Worcester sauce if you enjoy it) crushed to thicken it up. Add to a oblong oven dish (or individual dishes), allow to cool for 5 mins, then add the mashed potatoes and cook for 1/2 hour on 180° (I put it under the grill to brown the top first). Hope you enjoy.
Tesco and One Stop are the same Firm , tbh Tesco and One Stop meals are Superior. So much so I am willing to pay that little bit extra. You are getting M & S Quality at a cheaper price . It’s Tesco/One Stop mead for me.
I used to buy cottage pies and lasagna from Iceland for a quid! Not sure if they still make them but they were a bit bigger, and totally spot on!! I bought a couple of boxes of "shelf stable" ready meals from a company called"Parsley Box" .... 10 different meals for £20. Best thing is they need no refrigeration!! And last about a year! Apocalypse food!!
I used to eat the Asda cottage pie regularly as I worked within a mile of Asda so I would walk down and pick one up at lunch once a week but when I moved from that job I started to make my own and haven’t looked back. Home made cottage pie is definitely the way to go. I use a Pyrex dish.
Quick foodies, get to ASDA and hoover up all this wrongly priced Cottage Pies before ASDA realise they're priced the wrong way round! Superb review Gareth, I sometimes have the ASDA one if I working late with some microwave brussel sprouts. I haven't tried the other two, however; strange pricing, no doubt after your review, they'll be wanting to fix that! Cheers pal.
Yes I been told why the smart price was fresh when I bought it, well I'm the fridge the other 2 are frozen. Strange but true. Yes I preferred the cheapest one. Tasty gravy. Cheers John. All the best. 😋😋👍👍
Hi Gareth. A great review of the 3 Cottage Pies. The one that was more a red colour is how my homemade recipe is because of the tomato paste. What gets my goat is some brands label their product as Shepherds pie, but it contains beef, not lamb... Grrrr 😡. We also have a Sweet Potato cottage pie and it's just an awful tasting Slop. It seems you have a better product there in England. Cheers Gareth, keep up the good work. 👍😀🇦🇺
@@sue-anneeast9685 I don't know how your mum cooked them, but if baked they are stronger tasting. Whereas if steamed it's a milder flavour. Don't worry, you're not the only person who doesn't like them. I don't like the White variety so much as the Yellow. Thanks for leaving a comment 👍😀
Hi made my Auld Mother a cottage pie just a few weeks ago. Cooked my mince in the slow cooker with Oxo carrot onion and lea and Perrin's sauce for 8 hours. Topped it with Idaho cheesy mash with added butter milk and cheese! My Mum didn't even know it was smash in a blast!
@@fandangobrandango7864 Fine if you can pay the price to shop there, not everyone can, the ingredients are basically the same so a full belly wins in the end 😊
Can't even get out to the shop or see my family, in isolation since Monday as I got the Covid no idea where as I haven't been around people. Anyway keep up the videos Gareth spot on.
The nicest cottage pie (after homemade) is Charlie Bigham's, but I only get it if there's a reduced one (love a yellow sticker). The next best I've tried was from B&Ms chilled section, definitely worth looking for.
Hi Gareth. This is an intersting review. Strange how Asdas smart price one was more expensive than the Asda regular one. Usually I put chilli sauce on it when I buy these which isnt all that often. Getting the cottage pies out is nearly is impossible, you cannot avoid having to break them a bit. But you've definately highlighted the best and nicest one for the money. Quite a turn up for the books in this review - the regular one was the best. I think I'll include the regular cottage pie in my next delivery which is coming this Monday (Asda is where I shop - online mainly). Cheers for that and Im looking forward to trying it - so lomg as its still in stock. They've normally sold out shortly after you announce its the winner on your channel. Oh by the way, you've said before that you cannot stand to see good food going to waste. Please promsie me they all got all eaten 🙏. Cheers Gareth 👍.
Another great review Gareth 😊 I luv watching cos it saves me having to buy them first! 😂 if you don’t like it then that’s good enough for me! I’ll just roll with that! 👍
Another great video Gareth, fun and honesty. I buy a lot of Tesco ready meals and cook them in the microwave, can you review the takeaway meals from Tesco and Asda as they claim to be for 2 people but I'd like your opinion please.
Times are very hard with bills and heating etc going up so we need to know what is best value for our pennies. Thanks for the videos for helping people decide
Yes one of your correspondents got it right; slop is the perfect description of these dishes aimed firmly at the underclass. I made one yesterday with cheap mince, browned off into air fryer, stick made from bones (Morrusons) and celeriac mash. Bloody lovely and not expensive at all.
Not had a cottage pie for a while but the maker of the foil dishes cheats as the centre is raised up so less ingredients inside which sucked but were about E4.75 and your paying less than a quid OMG. Interesting review.
I absolutely love your videos and reviews! I even bought some Mayflower curry last week based on your recommendation along with a trip to Iceland for Harry Ramsden chips! Keep up the amazing work! 🤤
Love seeing these reviews as I would've never bought them for 85pence, but now I can save on midweek dinners and a proper roast dinner on a Sunday... THANKYOU
I like the Tesco ones, I tend to open a tin of peas or sweetcorn with it. I remember those glass pyrex bowls from the past, they were dead heavy even with nothing in them. Hot pot, pies are all done in the pyrex dish 😂😂
I've still got a Pyrex dish, it's square with a glass handle either side. Also got a cast iron casserole pot which weighs a ton but is brilliant for cooking stews etc!
You NEED to be on daytime telly with your amazingly good vids. I have already done my Aldi shop and stepped away from the label snob stuff I used to buy. Never again!
Hi Gareth.Good review mate.I tried a Stamford St Cottage pie not long back and is wasn't good at all.Did an Asda shop the other day and they are doing rollback on Pyrex dishes and got a casserole dish cheap
Hi Gareth, did you freeze the Asda smart price cottage pie? I couldn't tell but you did mention that they have all been in the freezer. The Asda smart price is a chilled product and not suitable for freezing which also explains the higher price as its fresh. Also both the Tesco and the Asda smart price have do not reheat in bold so I wouldn't bother putting them in the fridge for later 😜 Cheers J
Very informative again. Thanks... You would think the name Asda Smart Price would mean it was cheaper than the other Asda one ? A little grating of cheese on top is always nice.. Cheers again
I remember the cottage pies of four in silver foil trays frozen . Use to always sell them in Tesco like 80 p for four I use to love them . Not seen them for years now tho
I love cottage pies!.another insightful review,Gareth. Any chance you could do a scotch pie-off comparison review soon?. Keep up the good work mate. Love your reviews.
Thanks for the review Gareth. I love cottage pies & Sheppards pie . I have to agree the cheaper one is very nice . What I do is put some grated cheese on the top five minutes before taking out the oven . Beautiful. Thanks Buddy. See you on the next one ☝️
Great review Gaz... Once again we find in this three way shoot off... That the cheapest Cottage Pie is the best one once again... Thanks for the review... All the best mate... I'm now going to be searching online for my brand new Microwave Oven... As my old one has finally packed up after about fifteen years... Cheers mate. 🍺
They are probably packaged in the same factory mate I worked for kingsmill in the bread factory and you would be surprised at the packaging and also where they go ect
I make my own cottage pie. Never had a frozen one but enjoyed the review I would go out and try your recommendation however i am a Aussie no ASDA here.
Sounds like I make them just like your Mam. Just the job with mushy peas, a bit of beetroot (and gravy if you want it). Happy days. All the best from Manchester.
I've had the smart price one. Really liked it. But because it's chilled not frozen its more expensive than the other asda one. It's a bit of a weird one that with the branding. But yeah it's more expensive because it's chilled not frozen.
I have tried these cottage pies before yes there alright with a bit of veg but the portions are very mean that Asda one used to be 500 gram then the pinched some out of it so now I just make my own in a batch and freeze them
Gareth totally agree with you can't beat mums shepherd pie funny doing peaks with fork go crispy, only just come in from seeing friend who been in hospital 18 months diagnosed with Leukemia before lockdown Chris was so healthy never know what tomorrow will bring, 💖💛🧡😋😋😋
Great Cottage 🏠 Pie 🥧 Food Comparison Review 👌 BFG ...PS Iv Got A Question 🤔 Where Did You Buy 💰 That MAGIC 🎩 Self Cleaning Spatula From ..? Happy Days 🙂
Morrisons do the 99p Cottage and Shepherd's Pie and they taste great. I tried these along with the 99p Hotpot you reviewed. Instead of cooking from frozen I defrost first and wack them in the air fryer or the microwave if I'm starving. Cheers Gareth. 👍🍻🍺
Have you tryed the aldi and lidle one person meals great variety of them I have them all the time well worth the price pluses you can freeze them great review
I watch quite a few food reviewers in the UK and USA cuz I am English and the wife’s a yank we don’t always agree on stuff but we both agree you are by far the best Gareth mate
......just been reading the reviews on the ASDA Spicy bean burgers..... and glowing, someone does say they're like the old Burger king spicy bean burger.... which were absolutely delicious 😋 I'd definitely recommend making a burger out of them though..... hopefully a better result than the Linda McCartney mozzarella burger!
Please could you review the ASDA Spicy bean burger £1.50 for four. Maybe make a Spicy bean burger Whopper... Heel Burger Cheese 4 pickles 3 Onions rings Ketchup ............. 2 slices Tomato Lettuce Mayo on... Crown Many thanks
I have tried the tesco one ant to be honest it went in the bin which was a bit of a bummer as it was my lunch at work. the m&s is ex[pensive at over £3 but is definatley worth the extra which is fine if your not on a budget,
I had Morrison's today (only because I can't walk at the moment)...it was £1 and it was exactly like hospital mince and mash after a tonsils op. i didn't like the mash it was a bit powdery. I ate it with Aldi green beans. It was okay in an emergency and would have been better with grated parmesan before cooking.
Great review I will have to try the Asda one I would have thought the smart price would have been the cheapest but your right it's not but the one you liked best does look pretty good.
Agree with baked beans (hnz) Also fried cheap sausages and HP brown sauce. Anyone tried Morrison's value range bangers.? Well tasty and worth a review if you get time bro.
Wait.... SO these are packaged for my local ASDA. I live 2 mins away from this asda location via the Postcode. Im in Antrim lol. So are these only available in Leeds and Antrim?
Ages since I bought a cottage pie but great review 👍🏻like your Mam, I make my own in small Pyrex dishes & freeze them, plenty of mash top. It’s great when you are busy as you have done the work already 😎
Lovely, thanks for the review on these, I'll get some Asda ones. Have to admit I have microwave meals for breakfast in the winter, and I put some grated cheese on the cottage pies.
@@CARLOS68 Excuse me? How am I wrong?.... The Asda Smart Price one (White cardboard sleeve in the rectangle plastic tray IS NOT READY FROZEN... It is chilled and is in the chilled ready meals aisle. The asda chilled meals cost more than their frozen version. The fresh one in the white sleeve costs £1.20... Yes it is suitable for freezing at home but it is NOT frozen when you buy it.. IT'S CHILLED... The asda frozen one, which is cheaper is 85p... muppet
@@CARLOS68 READ my initial comment again... THE REASON THE 85P ASDA ONE WAS CHEAPER THAN THE CHILLED £1.20 ASDA ONE... IS BECAUSE THE 85P ONE IS FROZEN!!!!! Again.... The cheaper 85p one from asda is CHEAPER than the other asda one which was £1.20 is because the 85p one WAS FROZEN... and the £1.20 asda one was chilled NOT FROZEN You're making no sense!!! I buy the asda £1.20 ones... THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE 85P one because it's not frozen!! Read my comment correctly before replying
The Tesco and Asda frozen ones would have been made in the same factory, hence the "IE" code in the circle. The Smart Price one would have been made in the UK and was fresh so would be why it was more expensive.
Great review gareth classic British meal cottage/sheapards pies a firm family favourite in my house and in my mother's always an empty plate after serving not had the smart price but had the other's and they are better oven cooked over microwave cooked 👍👍🥩🥩🥔🥔
10:00 *Sprinkle some Red Grated Leicestershire Cheese on top and place under Grill for 2½ Minutes - Splash with a Dose of Worcester Sauce - Delicious!*
Yes indeed. One of my favourite meals. Cottage or shepards pie. Only had the tesco and Iceland ones so far though. I eat straight out of the container. Plate if I add some veg or chips. You have the same spautula as me. Used to have a metal one until I ruined a wok with the thing. Scratched off the teflon. Now I have a new wok and silicon spatula. I add some grated cheese on top and some salt and pepper. Tastes even better.
In the eighties there was a shepherd's pie made by Ross. It was tasty , I think they must have put Monosodium Glutamate in it. However it was nice . Tesco's Sainsbury's and others seem bland by comparison. Handy when all you've got is a microwave and a five minute break.
