Many people wondered why the original Tesla Giga factory, the one in Nevada, took so long to grow… in fact, it’s still not even close to the size it was supposed to be. Elon learned the hard way that tax breaks don’t add up to much if the manpower you need refuses to drive that far to go to work. Notice he did not make that mistake a second time… Shanghai 24.8 million, Berlin 3.6 million, Austin 1.2 million, Monterrey 5.2 million. Now, imagine he gets a great factory location, cheap on taxes, lotsa power, lotsa water, nothing environmentally to worry about, lotsa space to build and expand, near rail, waterways and airports… but low population… NO PROBLEM! Bring in Optimus!!!!

I'm glad this went into more detail. I found it somewhat annoying that people seemed to expect optimus to magically have human-level hand dexterity with one degree of freedom per finger. I'm a big Optimus fan, but let's keep it real. To get human dexterity, you need to maybe double the actuator count.

@@peopleofearth6250 I agree with that. Actually AI doesn't need a robot body at all to completely transform society. I'm just skeptical of notions such as the initial version of Optimus being equivalent to three humans just because it can operate 24/7 without breaks.

A bit after the 1 hour mark, Herbert asked how the Kuka robot communicates with Tesla Bot. During Investor Day it was mentioned that they had installed a 5G network on the factory floor. This is one of the advantages of 5G, it can work over many bands and bandwidths and it also has many modes to support low latency factory floor operations. Another key point is replaceability. If a normal manufacturing robot goes down it takes a lot more time, effort and money to replace. They are usually designed for a very narrow specific task. If a Tesla Bot breaks and you have hundreds or thousands of Tesla Bots in the factory, then you can just load the new program and replace the broken one with his buddy robot. Now there’s almost no down time, which in the manufacturing process, is everything!

Absolutely agree with Scott. Optimus in a factory is easy compared to FSD and they’re really easy to make compared to cars. By Q4 automated assembly probably ramped up, so lots of working Optimus’s. The ‘street’ can’t see what’s coming because its never happened before. At $10k cost and $100k sell x 1 million PA = $90 Billion profit PA. At a PE of 20, that adds $1.8 Trillion to market cap in maybe five years. But there’ll be nearly infinite demand. So ramping production to 10M PA means order of $18 Trillion market cap, or $6,000 share price not including cars and energy … FFS!

Thanks, although I have watched the day to day operations of SpaceX I haven't really paid any attention to the Tesla bot thinking that since it has taken Boston Dynamics the last 20 to 30 years to accomplish what they have as one of the front runners in cool robot tech, I didn't think that in a couple of years would make much of a difference in capabilities. I'm not sure why I decided to watch this video to start with, but I'm completely convinced that what Scott said is that these robots will completely evolutionize manufacturing. I just turned 63 and all I want is to see is Elon/SpaceX land on Mars. Even better if a hundred robots land on Mars to set up camp. Even if they crash they can search the crash site and salvage themselves for spare parts. Now I'm thinking these robots could easily clear and prep land for Tesla Bot mega factory since like Scott said the bots won't need bathrooms, breakrooms, parking lots, cafeterias, HR reps, they could probably make cold calls and drive to potential clients take meetings and sell themselves and if the client doesn't pay they can break legs also.

Herbert, You have an incredible archivist. How did you find that old footage? I hadn't seen those videos for years, I thought they were lost with the Library of Alexandria.

I think the robot knows where the fingers are because of computer vison. Hand gesture tracking with computer vision is already possible today. And the robot has plenty processing power to do that.

Amazing video

Very good video. The backflip is just an example of a highly dextrous ability. Some other similarly dextrous abilities will likely be valuable for a robot to be able to do.

Thanks, it is always a pleasure to listen to intelligent people, who understand how amazing it is, what Tesla is doing and how much it makes sense, when looking at the overall picture. One reason behind Optimus not having a super human motion range could be, that Optimus then can always be replaced by a human worker, if necessary. Having the head in a fix position helps a lot with the coordination between vision and calculation of orientation in space.

One thing I remember from childhood, that my cousin lost his Little toe in a tricycle accident, and had to learn balance all over again to walk again without his little toe.

I have no doubt they are testing and iterating Optimus in a variety of scenarios. This is exactly what we'd expect from Tesla. But it's a very long stretch to say Optimus is already being used to help build actual production vehicles.

I guess that depends on your definition on "helping". If Optimus picks up some part and moves it a few inches closer to where it is supposed to be, it has helped. Kind of like how a child will help his father repair the roof by reaching him a hammer, or help his mother cook dinner by stirring in a pot for half a minute.

@@Will-be-free Exactly and a few years later the robot is cooking all by itself.
